Today we will look at the form हर्ता 3As-लुँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 6.11.18.

Gita Press translation – “If, on the other hand, O valiant Indra, you actually succeed in crushing my army and severing my (own) head with your thunderbolt in this encounter, I shall in that case offer my body as a (propitiatory) oblation to birds and beasts (such as vultures and jackals) and (thus) freed from all debts (of Karma), attain to the dust of feet (destiny or abode) of enlightened souls (Nārada and others). O ruler of gods, wherefore do you not hurl your unfailing thunderbolt at me, your enemy, stationed before you? (Pray) do not entertain any misgiving (in your mind). (Rest assured that) the thunderbolt will not prove ineffectual as your mace or as an entreaty seeking its fulfilment from a miser.”

हर्ता is derived from the धातुः √हृ (भ्वादि-गणः, हृञ् हरणे धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, “हृञ्” has one इत् letter which is the ending ञकार:। It gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and hence takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोप:। Since ञकार: is an इत्, by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, √हृ takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः when the fruit of the action (क्रियाफलम्) accrues to the doer (कर्त्रभिप्रायम् = कर्तृ-अभिप्रायम्)। In the remaining case – when the fruit of the action does not accrue to the doer – by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्√हृ takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः। In short, √हृ is उभयपदी।

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “तिप्/त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इड्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter.
Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।

Questions:

१०४६) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the last five verses of Chapter Six of the गीता?

2. Besides in 6-4-143 टेः, in which other सूत्रम् (which we have studied) does the term टे: appear?

3. Can you spot a “श्नु”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?

4. Can you spot a “श”-प्रत्यय: in the commentary?

5. Where has 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Relax! I will take away all your worries.” १०१) with the उपसर्ग: “वि” for “to relax.” १०४६) with the उपसर्ग: “अप” for “to take away.” Use the feminine noun “चिन्ता” for “worry.”

Easy questions:

1. Please do पदच्छेद: of भो इन्द्र (used in the commentary) and mention the relevant rules.

2. Where has 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः been used in the commentary?

  1. Questions:
१०४६) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the last five verses of Chapter Six of the गीता?
१०४६) has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the last five verses of Chapter Six of the गीता in the form ह्रियते।

As per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, a आत्मनेपदम् affix is used.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः is not applied after applying 7-4-28 for the following reason – In the अष्टाध्यायी, the सूत्रम् 7-4-27 रीङ् ऋतः comes right before 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु। If पाणिनिः wanted to get the दीर्घ-आदेशः then he would have used the अनुवृत्तिः of रीङ् from 7-4-27. The fact that he has introduced रिङ् in 7-4-28 is a ज्ञापकम् (indication) that after applying 7-4-28, the दीर्घ-आदेशः should not be done (by 7-4-25.)

    2. Besides in 6-4-143 टेः, in which other सूत्रम् (which we have studied) does the term टे: appear?
Answer: The term टे: appears in two other सूत्रे which we have studied –
    (1) 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः – The टि-भागः of “पथिन्”, “मथिन्” and “ऋभुक्षिन्”, when they have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, takes लोपः।
    (2) 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे – The टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

    3. Can you spot a “श्नु”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?
    Answer: A “श्नु”-प्रत्यय: in the verses is seen in the form हिनोषि derived from the धातुः √हि (हि गतौ वृद्धौ च ५.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। “सिप्” has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः, the श्नु-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal roots of the स्वादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवादः (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
Note: Since the प्रत्यय: “नु” is a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: which is अपित्, it becomes ङित्-वत् (as if it has ङकार: as an इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। And then 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the ending इकार: of the अङ्गम् “हि” which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।

    4. Can you spot a “श”-प्रत्यय: in the commentary?
    Answer: A “श”-प्रत्यय: is seen in the form क्षिपसि derived from the धातुः √क्षिप् (क्षिपँ प्रेरणे ६. ५).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। “सिप्” has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः। Note: Since the प्रत्यय: “श” is a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: which is अपित्, it becomes ङित्-वत् (as if it has ङकार: as an इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। And then 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the penultimate इकार: of the अङ्गम् “क्षिप्” which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

    5. Where has 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः been used in the verses?
    Answer: 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः has been used in the verses in the form स्यात् derived from the धातुः √अस् (असँ भुवि, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२.
By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः – The अकारः of “श्न” and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by सार्वाधातुक-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
    Note: The प्रत्यय: “यात्” is a ङित् due to यासुट् being a ङित्। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

    Answer: पदच्छेद: of भो इन्द्र is भो:, इन्द्र।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुँ।
By 8-3-17 भोभगोअघोअपूर्वस्य योऽशि।
By 8-3-20 ओतो गार्ग्यस्य। (We have not studied this सूत्रम् in the class.) The वृत्ति: for this सूत्रम् says – ओकारात्परस्य पदान्तस्यालघुप्रयत्नस्य यकारस्य नित्यं लोप: स्यात् – Following a ओकार:, a यकार: which is at the end of a पदम् and is not of subdued articulation (ref. 8-3-18) is always elided. Note: After this 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    2. Where has 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः has been used in the commentary in the form भवान् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “भवत्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)। “भवत्” ends in the डवतुँ-प्रत्यय:।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः – When the “सुँ” affix which is not सम्बुद्धिः follows, a base that ends in “अतुँ” or a base that ends in an “अस्” which is not of a verbal root, has its penultimate letter elongated.
Note: 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः is actually a later rule, and also an invariable rule (नित्य-कार्यम्) compared to 6-4-14. So as per 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम्, we should apply 7-1-70 before 6-4-14. But if we do that then the mention of “अतु” in 6-4-14 will become useless – it will never find application because then the उपधा will always be a नकार:। So on the basis of वचनसामर्थ्यात् we apply 6-4-14 before 7-1-70.
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य cannot be applied because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।
