Gita Press translation “What should be speedily done by me now with reference to him? For (if I attempt to make short work of him, the moment he is born) he is not going to withhold his prowess (even as a new-born babe would do), intent as he is on his purpose (of advancing the interests of the gods). (And if I dispose of Devakī herself, before my enemy is born,) such destruction of Devakī (my cousin), who is not only a woman but enceinte (too), will forthwith mar my reputation and prosperity and cut short my life. Such a one is indeed (as good as) dead, though breathing, who lives by most atrocious deeds; (for) people curse such a man (even during his lifetime) and, when his body gets defunct, he is surely destined to go to hell (consisting of blinding darkness), the inevitable fate of one identifying oneself with the body.”

गन्ता is derived from the धातुः √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

In the धातु-पाठः, the धातुः √गम् has one इत् letter – the ऌकार: following the मकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √गम् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √गम् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √गम् can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: is “तिप्”।

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

See question 2.

By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।

By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter.
See question 3.

By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.

By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

Questions:

1. Where is √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) used with लुँट् in the गीता (Chapter Two)?

2. Why doesn’t 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः apply after step 6?

3. Why does 6-4-143 टेः apply in step 9 in spite of the fact that the अङ्गम् “गम् + तास्” does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा?

4. Where has विधि-लिँङ् been used in the verses?

5. Where has विधि-लिँङ् been used in the commentary?

6. Use some words from the verse to construct the following sentence in Sanskrit:
“One who eats meat is surely destined to go to hell.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “मांस” for “meat”, use √भुज् (भुजँ पालनाभ्यवहारयोः ७. १७) for “to eat” and the masculine/neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “नरक” for “hell.” Use appropriate forms of the pronouns “यद्” and “तद्”।

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot a “आट्”-आगम: in the verses?

2. Can you a “असुँङ्”-आदेश: in the commentary?
