Gita Press translation – “He who does evil to an innocent creature must have fear from me on all sides. Pious souls are surely benefited when vile creatures are subdued. I shall certainly cut off the arm, along with the armlet adorning it, of the individual, be he a veritable god, who in his unbridled madness inflicts injury on harmless creatures. “

हर्तास्मि is derived from the धातुः √हृ (भ्वादि-गणः, हृञ् हरणे धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, “हृञ्” has one इत् letter which is the ending ञकार:। It gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and hence takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोप:। Since ञकार: is an इत्, as per the सूत्रम् 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, √हृ is उभयपदी। In this verse, it has taken a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:।

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

“आङ्” (ending ङकार: is a इत्) is the उपसर्गः (ref.

  1. Questions:

    1. लुँट् is used only in three chapters of the गीता। Which are they?
Answer: लुँट् has been used only in the following three chapters of the गीता। In Chapter Two in the forms भविता derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) and गन्तासि derived from the धातुः √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७), in Chapter Eleven in the form जेतासि derived from the धातुः √जि (जि जये १. ६४२) and in Chapter Eighteen in the form भविता।

    2. Which विभक्ति:/वचनम् has been used in the term स्यतासी in the सूत्रम् 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः?
    ii.
    iii.
    iv. None of the above.
Answer: i. Since there are two affixes (“स्य” and “तासिँ”) being prescribed the dual case has been used. An item being prescribed (विधीयमानम्) is put in the प्रथमा विभक्ति:। Hence प्रथमा-द्विवचनम् is used here.

    3. Where has 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः been used in the verses?
    Answer: 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः has been used in the verses in the form स्यात् derived from the धातुः √अस् (असँ भुवि, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२.

The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः – The अकारः of “श्न” and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by सार्वाधातुक-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
    Note: The प्रत्यय: “यात्” is a ङित् due to यासुट् being a ङित्। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

    4. Can you spot a “इय्”-आदेश: in the commentary?
    Answer: A “इय्”-आदेश: is seen in the form भवेत् is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १).
By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।

By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-2-80 अतो येयः, when “यास्” of a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows an अङ्गम् ending in a अकारः, then it is substituted by “इय्”।
By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “आह्”-आदेश: in the form आह used in the commentary?
Answer: 3-4-84 ब्रुवः पञ्चानाम् आदित आहो ब्रुवः is used for the “आह्”-आदेश: in the form आह used in the commentary. The word आह is derived from the धातुः (√ब्रू, अदादि-गणः, ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि, धातु-पाठः #२. It is an alternate form for ब्रवीति।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-84 ब्रुवः पञ्चानामादित आहो ब्रुवः – The first five affixes (“तिप्”, “तस्”, “झि”, “सिप्”, “थस्”) of लँट् following the verbal root √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९) optionally get the first five णलादि-प्रत्ययाः (“णल्”, “अतुस्”, “उस्”, “थल्”, “अथुस्”) as replacements. As per 1-3-10, the substitutions are done respectively. Simultaneously, “ब्रू” takes the substitution “आह्”।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप् ।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Knowledge will always bring happiness.” १०४६) will the उपसर्ग: “आङ्” for “to bring.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has 7-2-113 हलि लोपः been used in the verses?
    Answer: 7-2-113 हलि लोपः has been used in the form अस्य (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः।
By 7-2-113 हलि लोपः, the “इद्” of इदम् that is without the ककारः takes लोपः, when the विभक्तिः affixes of the आप्-प्रत्याहारः, which begin with a consonant, follow. This rule is an अपवाद: (exception) to the prior rule 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः।
Only the दकारः of “इद्” would take लोपः by 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य। But the following परिभाषा takes effect: नानर्थकेऽलोन्त्यविधिरनभ्यासविकारे
This means that the rule 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य does not apply in the case of a term that is devoid of meaning, except in the case which involves modification of an अभ्यास:।
In this example, the entire term “इदम्” has meaning but the “इद्” part doesn’t. So 1-1-52 does not apply when it comes to operating on the “इद्” part. Therefore, the “इद्” part completely takes लोपः by 7-2-113.
    Note: आप् is the प्रत्याहारः made of the सुँप् affixes from टा (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) until सुप् (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्)।

    2. Can you spot a “अनँङ्”-आदेश: in the commentary?
    Answer: A “अनँङ्”-आदेश: is seen in the verse in the form अपराधकर्ता, प्रातिपदिकम् “अपराधकर्तृ”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
“अनँङ्”-आदेश: by 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, “ऋत्” (short “ऋ”) ending terms, as well as the terms “उशनस्”, “पुरुदंसस्” and “अनेहस्” get the “अनँङ्” replacement when the “सुँ” suffix, that is not सम्बुद्धिः, follows. As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, a ङित् substitute (substitute which has the letter “ङ्” as a marker), even if it is अनेकाल् (having more than one letter), takes place of only the last letter of the term being substituted. Hence only the ending ऋकार: of the अङ्गम् “अपराधकर्तृ” is replaced by “अनँङ्”।
By 6-4-11 अप्तृन्तृच्स्वसृनप्तृनेष्टृत्वष्टृक्षत्तृहोतृपोतृप्रशास्तॄणाम्, when a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix that is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the penultimate vowel of “अप्”, of words ending in affixes “तृन्” and “तृच्” and of the words “स्वसृ”, “नप्तृ”, “नेष्टृ”, “त्वष्टृ”, “क्षत्तृ”, “होतृ”, “पोतृ” and “प्रशास्तृ” is elongated.
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य, the ending letter “न्” of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।
