गम्याम् fAs

Today we will look at the form गम्याम् fAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 1.14.42.

कच्चित्त्वं ब्राह्मणं बालं गां वृद्धं रोगिणं स्त्रियम् । शरणोपसृतं सत्त्वं नात्याक्षीः शरणप्रदः ॥ १-१४-४१ ॥
कच्चित्त्वं नागमोऽगम्यां गम्यां वासत्कृतां स्त्रियम् । पराजितो वाथ भवान्नोत्तमैर्नासमैः पथि ॥ १-१४-४२ ॥

श्रीधर-स्वामि-टीका
अन्यद्वा शरणागतं सत्त्वं प्राणिमात्रं न त्यक्तवानसि किम् । यस्त्वं पूर्वं शरणप्रद आश्रयप्रदः ॥ ४१ ॥ अगम्यामिति छेदः । निन्दितां स्त्रियं नागमः किं न गतवानसि। असत्कृतां मलिनवस्त्रादिना नागमः किम् । नोत्तमैरनुत्तमैः समैरित्यर्थः । असमैरधमैर्वा किं न पराजितोऽसीत्यर्थः ॥ ४२ ॥

Translation – I hope you never turned away any Brāhmaṇa, child, cow, aged or ailing man, any woman or any creature whatsoever that might have approached you for protection, noted as you are for affording shelter (to the needy) (41). I am sure you never shared the bed with a woman unworthy of you nor did you approach a woman who (though) worthy was in a state of defilement. I further hope that you were not vanquished, while on your way back, by your equals nor by your inferiors (42).

“गम्य” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. ११३७)

(1) गम् + यत् । By 3-1-98 पोरदुपधात्‌ – The affix यत् may be used following a verbal root which ends in a letter of the प-वर्गः (“प्”, “फ्”, “ब्”, “भ्”, “म्”) and has a अकारः as its penultimate letter.

(2) गम् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
Note: “य” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।

“गम्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

(3) गम्य + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि “अज” etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(4) गम्य + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(5) गम्या । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is स्त्रीलिङ्गे, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

(6) गम्या + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(7) गम्याम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix “अम्” there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

    Answer: The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “गम्य” has been used (as a part of the compound) in the form ज्ञानगम्यम्।
    ज्योतिषामपि तज्ज्योतिस्तमसः परमुच्यते |
    ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यं हृदि सर्वस्य विष्ठितम्‌ || 13-18||

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-98 पोरदुपधात्‌ the तत्त्वबोधिनी says पोः किम्। पाक्यम्। Please explain.
    Answer: The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “पाक्य” is derived from √पच् (डुपचँष् पाके १. ११५१).

    पच् + ण्यत् । By 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ – The affix ण्यत् may be used following any verbal root which either ends in a ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः or ॠकारः) or in a consonant.
    Note: The verbal root √पच् has a अकारः as its penultimate letter but it ends in a चकारः which is not a letter of the प-वर्गः (“प्”, “फ्”, “ब्”, “भ्”, “म्”)। Therefore 3-1-98 पोरदुपधात्‌ cannot be used here.
    = पच् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: “य” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = पक् + य । By 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः।
    = पाक्य । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    “पाक्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Commenting further on the सूत्रम् 3-1-98 पोरदुपधात्‌ the तत्त्वबोधिनी says अदुपधात्किम्। कोप्यम्। Please explain.
    Answer: The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “कोप्य” is derived from √कुप् (कुपँ क्रोधे ४. १४६).

    कुप् + ण्यत् । By 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ – The affix ण्यत् may be used following any verbal root which either ends in a ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः or ॠकारः) or in a consonant.
    Note: The verbal root √कुप् ends in a letter of the प-वर्गः (“प्”, “फ्”, “ब्”, “भ्”, “म्”) but does not have a अकारः as its penultimate letter. Instead it has उकारः as its penultimate letter. Therefore 3-1-98 पोरदुपधात्‌ cannot be used here.
    = कुप् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: “य” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = कोप्य । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    “कोप्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. Can you spot an affix सिँच् in the verses?
    Answer: An affix सिँच् has been used in the form अत्याक्षीः derived from √त्यज् (त्यजँ हानौ १. ११४१).

    The विवक्षा is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    त्यज् + लुँङ् । By 3-2-110 लुङ्।
    = त्यज् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = त्यज् + सिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = त्यज् + सि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = त्यज् + स् । By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = त्यज् + च्लि + स् । By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
    = त्यज् + सिँच् + स् । By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच् – The affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।
    = त्यज् + स् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = त्यज् + स् + ईट् स् । By 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = त्यज् + स् + ईस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = त्याज् + स् + ईस् । By 7-2-3 वदव्रजहलन्तस्याचः।
    = अट् त्याज् + स् + ईस् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
    = अ त्याज् + स् + ईस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अ त्याक् + स् + ईस् । By 8-2-30 चोः कुः।
    = अत्याक्सीः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
    = अत्याक्षीः । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु has been used in the form अगमः derived from √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७).

    The विवक्षा is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

    = गम् + सि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = गम् + स् । By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = गम् + च्लि + स् । By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
    = गम् + अङ् + स् । By 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु – When a परस्मैपदम् affix follows, the affix “च्लि” is replaced by “अङ्” when following either –
    i) a verbal root from the section beginning with √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ ४. ७९) up to the end of the दिवादि-गणः। or
    ii) a verbal root from the section beginning with √द्युत् (द्युतँ दीप्तौ १. ८४२) up to √कृप् (कृपूँ सामर्थ्ये १. ८६६)। or
    iii) a verbal root which is ऌदित् (which has ऌकारः as a इत्)।
    = गम् + अ + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अट् गम् + अ + स् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = अगमस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अगमः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “You ought to go home now.” Paraphrase to passive.
    Answer: इदानीम्/अधुना त्वया गृहम् गम्यम् = इदानीं/अधुना त्वया गृहं गम्यम्।

    = गाम् । By 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः, आकारः is the single substitute in the place of an ओकारः and the following अकारः of affixes “अम्” and “शस्”।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः has been used in the form पथि (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्”, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्।)

    पथिन् + ङि । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
    = पथिन् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Here ‘पथिन्’ gets भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्।
    = पथ् + इ । By 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः – When “पथिन्”, “मथिन्” or “ऋभुक्षिन्” has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, its टि-भागः takes लोपः। As per 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि, the टि-भागः of ‘पथिन्’ is ‘इन्’।
    = पथि ।
