Today we will look at the form कर्ता 3As-लुँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 6.17.15

Note: We have to supply the subject भवान् for the verb कर्ता। श्रीधर-स्वामी has commented करिष्यसि in the place of कर्ता, replacing the implied subject भवान् (for कर्ता) by त्वम् (for करिष्यसि)।

Gita Press translation “Hence be reborn in the demoniac species – a most wicked species – O evil-minded one, so that you may not perpetrate again in this world, such offense against the exalted souls my son.” Śrī Śuka resumed : “Thus subjected to an execration, the said Citraketu alighted from his aerial car and propitiated the noble lady (Goddess Pārvatī) with his head bent low (in the following words), O Parīkṣit (a scion of Bharata).”

कर्ता is derived from the धातुः √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०)

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Since √कृ has ञकारः as इत् in the धातु-पाठः, by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले √कृ is उभयपदी।
See question 2.

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः
See question 3.

By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter.
Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।

Questions:

1. The word कर्ता is used many times in the गीता। In which (if any) of those usages has लुँट् been used?

2. What would be the final form in this example if आत्मनेपदम् were to be used?

3. Most monosyllabic verbal roots ending in a ऋकार: (like √कृ) are अनुदात्तोपदेशा: (their vowel has a अनुदात्त-स्वर: in the धातु-पाठ:)। Hence 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ applies. But there are three which are उदात्तोपदेशा: (their vowel has a उदात्त-स्वर: in the धातु-पाठ:)। Which are they?

4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “हि”-आदेश: in the form याहि?

5. Can you spot a “णिच्”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Arjuna said to Sri Krishna, ‘I will carry out your command.'” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “शासन” for “command” and (a लुँट् form of) √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०) for “to carry out.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः been used in the verse?

2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “आत्”-आदेश: in the form विमानात्?

  1. Questions:
    1. The word कर्ता is used many times in the गीता। In which (if any) of those usages has लुँट् been used?
Answer: लुँट् has not been used in any of the forms कर्ता in the गीता। In all cases in the गीता, the form कर्ता is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् “कर्तृ”। Steps are as follows:

    कर्तृ + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, “ऋत्” (short “ऋ”) ending terms, as well as the terms “उशनस्”, “पुरुदंसस्” and “अनेहस्” get the “अनँङ्” replacement when the “सुँ” suffix, that is not सम्बुद्धिः, follows. As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ऋकार: of “कर्तृ” is replaced.
By 6-4-11 अप्-तृन्-तृच्-स्वसृ-नप्तृ-नेष्टृ-त्वष्टृ-क्षत्तृ-होतृ-पोतृ-प्रशास्तॄणाम्, when a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix that is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the penultimate vowel of “अप्”, of words ending in affixes “तृन्” and “तृच्” and of the words “स्वसृ”, “नप्तृ”, “नेष्टृ”, “त्वष्टृ”, “क्षत्तृ”, “होतृ”, “पोतृ” and “प्रशास्तृ” is elongated.
Now “कर्तान्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    2. What would be the final form in this example if आत्मनेपदम् were to be used?
Answer: The final form in this example if आत्मनेपदम् were to be used would also be the same कर्ता। The reason for this is that 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः applies in both cases.
By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।

    3. Most monosyllabic verbal roots ending in a ऋकार: (like √कृ) are अनुदात्तोपदेशा: (their vowel has a अनुदात्त-स्वर: in the धातु-पाठ:)। Hence 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् applies. But there are three which are उदात्तोपदेशा: (their vowel has a उदात्त-स्वर: in the धातु-पाठ:)। Which are they?
    Answer: The three monosyllabic verbal roots which end in a ऋकार: and are उदात्तोपदेशा: (their vowel has a उदात्त-स्वर: in the धातु-पाठ:) are √वृ (वृङ् सम्भक्तौ ९. Note: आधृषीय: refers to a verbal root which belongs to the section from √युज् (युजँ संयमने १०. The specialty of this section is that these verbal roots take the णिच्-प्रत्यय: only optionally as per the गणसूत्रम् – “आ धृषाद्वा”।

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “हि”-आदेश: in the form याहि?
    Answer: 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च is used for the “हि”-आदेश: in the form याहि derived from the धातुः √या (या प्रापणे, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः २.
By 3-3-162 लोट् च ।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च , “सि” of लोँट् is substituted by “हि” and it is an अपित्
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।

    5. Can you spot a “णिच्”-प्रत्यय: in the verses?
    Answer: A “णिच्”-प्रत्यय: in the verses is seen in the form प्रसादयामास which is a causative form derived from the धातुः √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. The beginning षकार: of “षदॢँ” is replaced by a सकार: as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः। The ending ऌकार: is a इत् as per 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

सद् + णिच्3-1-26 हेतुमति च – The affix “णिच्” is used after a root, when the operation of a causer – such as the operation of directing – is to be expressed.
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
“सादि” gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 6-4-55 अयामन्ताल्वाय्येत्न्विष्णुषु।
By 2-4-81 आमः।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…..।
By 2-4-81 आमः।
By 3-1-40 कृञ् चानुप्रयुज्यते लिटि, following a term ending in the affix “आम्”, one of the following is annexed:
    i. १०) followed by लिँट्
    ii. १) followed by लिँट् or
    iii. ६०) followed by लिँट्
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 7-4-70 अत आदेः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

    “प्र” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Arjuna said to Sri Krishna, ‘I will carry out your command.’” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “शासन” for “command” and (a लुँट् form of) √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०) for “to carry out.”

    1. Where has 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः been used in the verse?
    Answer: 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः has been used in the verse in the form (हे) दुर्मते (प्रातिपदिकम् “दुर्मति”, पुंलिङ्गे सम्बुद्धि:।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………। Here “सुँ” has सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः।
By 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः, when the सम्बुद्धि: affix follows, there is a गुण: substitute for the (ending letter of) of an अङ्गम् ending in a short vowel.
By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात् सम्बुद्धेः, following an अङ्गम् ending in एङ् (“ए” or “ओ”) or a short vowel, a consonant is dropped if it belongs to a सम्बुद्धि: affix.

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “आत्”-आदेश: in the form विमानात्?
    Answer: 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः is used for the “आत्”-आदेश: in the form विमानात् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “विमान”, पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्… ।
By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः, following a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in a अकार:, the affixes “टा”, “ङसिँ” and “ङस्” are replaced respectively by “इन”, “आत्” and “स्य”।
