जीवामि 1As-लँट्

Today we will look at the form जीवामि 1As-लँट् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 5-28-3.

सत्यं बतेदं प्रवदन्ति लोके नाकालमृत्युर्भवतीति सन्तः ।
यत्राहमेवं परिभर्त्स्यमाना जीवामि यस्मात् क्षणमप्यपुण्या ।। ५-२८-३ ।।

Gita Press translation “Truly do the wise affirm that death does not come in the world before the appointed hour, since I, devoid of merit that I am, survive even for a moment, though being reproached unsparingly in this way.”

जीवामि is derived from the धातुः √जीव् (भ्वादि-गणः, जीवँ प्राणधारणे, धातु-पाठः #१. ६४३)

The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

In the धातु-पाठः, the √जीव्-धातुः has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the वकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the √जीव्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। (Neither 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् nor 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले applies.) Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √जीव्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So जीव्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is उत्तम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “मिप्”।

(1) जीव् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) जीव् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) जीव् + मिप् । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “मिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(4) जीव् + शप् + मिप् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(5) जीव् + अ + मि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) जीवामि । By 7-3-101 अतो दीर्घो यञि – the ending अकार: of a अङ्गम् is elongated if it is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the यञ्-प्रत्याहार:।

Questions:

1. Can you spot a तिङन्त-पदम् with the जीव्-धातुः in the Third Chapter of the गीता?

2. The अव्ययम् “इति” normally ends a quotation. We have to look at the context to see where the quotation begins. In this verse, where does the quotation begin?

3. Can you identify other लँट् forms in this verse?

4. How do you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who doesn’t read the गीता lives in vain.” Use “मोघम्” as an adverb for “in vain.” (Ref. गीता 3-16.)

5. How do you say this in Sanskrit?
“Live happily.” Use लोँट् with √जीव् and use “सुखम्” as an adverb for “happily.”

6. How do you say this in Sanskrit?
“Nobody lives without water.” Use the अव्ययम् “विना” for “without” and use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “जल” for “water.” Use द्वितीया-विभक्ति: with “जल”।

(6) भू + यासुट् त् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च , the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः before the प्रत्यय:।

(7) भू + यास् त् । The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(8) भू + शप् + यास् त् । by 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

In the धातु-पाठः, the √कृष्-धातुः has one इत् letter which is the अकारः following the षकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the √कृष्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। (Neither 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् nor 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले applies.) Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √कृष्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. जयेम 1Ap-लिँङ्

Today we will look at the form जयेम 1Ap-विधि-लिँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb3-14-19.

यामाश्रित्येन्द्रियारातीन्दुर्जयानितराश्रमैः ।
वयं जयेम हेलाभिर्दस्यून्दुर्गपतिर्यथा ।। ३-१४-१९ ।।

Gita Press translation “Just as the governor of a fortress easily conquers a host of maranders, so by falling back upon her we (householders) are able to subdue without any difficulty enemies in the shape of our senses, which people belonging to other Áśramas find hard to conquer.”

जयेम is derived from the धातुः √जि (जि जये, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. ६४२)

The विवक्षा is विधि-लिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

In the धातु-पाठः, the जि-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the जि-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So जि-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is उत्तम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “मस्”।

(1) जि + लिँङ् । By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ् , the affix लिङ् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of command, direction, invitation, request, inquiry and entreaty.

(2) जि + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) जि + मस् । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मस्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “मस्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(4) जि + म । by 3-4-99 नित्यं डितः , a उत्तम-पुरुषः affix ending in a सकारः, always gets elided if it is of a लकारः which is ङित्। By 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending सकारः takes लोपः ।

(5) जि + यासुट् म । by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च , the परस्‍मैपद-प्रत्यया: of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः before the प्रत्यय:। The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) जि + शप् + यास् म । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(7) जे + शप् + यास् म । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

(8) जे + अ + यास् म । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) जय + यास् म । “अय्”-आदेश: by 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

(10) जय इय् म । 7-2-80 अतो येयः, when “यास्” of a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows an अङ्गम् ending in a अकारः, then it is substituted by “इय्” ।

(11) जय इम । 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि, a वकारः or a यकारः is elided when it is followed by a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः।

(12) जयेम । 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

Questions:

1. Where is जयेम used in the Second Chapter of the गीता?

2. In the absence of 7-2-80 अतो येयः, which सूत्रम् would have applied in step 10?

3. As we have seen in previous examples, the क्त्वा-प्रत्यय: is used when we have the same doer doing two actions. The verbal root in the earlier action takes the क्त्वा-प्रत्यय:| (The सूत्रम् is 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले । If there is a compound formation then the क्त्वा-प्रत्यय: is replaced by ल्यप् as per 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्)। In this verse the word “आश्रित्य” ends in ल्यप्-प्रत्यय:। (A तुँक्-आगम: has also come in there by 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक्)। Who is/are the common doer(s) and what is his/her/their later action?

4. Can you spot an example in the Eighteenth Chapter of the गीता where a यकार: is followed by a consonant (हल्) which is not a वल् letter? (Hence 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि doesn’t apply.)

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who would conquer his own mind, is truly a hero.” Use the अव्ययम् “तत्त्वत:” for “truly” and the adjective “वीर” for “hero.”

6. The अमरकोशः gives eighteen synonyms for the word “शत्रु:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “शत्रु” masculine, meaning “enemy.”) Two of them are “अराति:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “अराति” masculine) and “दस्यु:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “दस्यु” masculine) used in this verse. Please list the other sixteen.
रिपौ वैरिसपत्नारिद्विषद्द्वेषणदुर्हृदः ।।२-८-१०।।
द्विट्विपक्षाहितामित्रदस्युशात्रवशत्रवः
अभिघातिपरारातिप्रत्यर्थिपरिपन्थिनः ।।२-८-११।।
(इति ऊनविंशति: “शत्रो:” नामानि)
