कम्पन्ते 3Ap-लँट्

Today we will look at the form कम्पन्ते 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 7-8-7.

क्रुद्धस्य यस्य कम्पन्ते त्रयो लोकाः सहेश्वराः ।
तस्य मेऽभीतवन्मूढ शासनं किंबलोऽत्यगाः ।। ७-८-७ ।।

Gita Press translation “By whose might, O fool, have you violated, like an undaunted person, the authority of one, viz., myself before whom, when angry, (all) the three worlds, including their guardians, shake (with fear)?”

कम्पन्ते is derived from the धातुः √कम्प् (भ्वादि-गणः, कपिँ चलने, धातु-पाठः #१. ४३५)

The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

The इकारः at the end of “कपिँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् । Therefore this धातुः is an इदित्। The इकारः takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

क नुँम् प् । By 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः, a धातुः which has इकारः as an इत् gets the नुँम्-आगमः। Note: The सूत्रम् 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः comes in the “6-4-1 अङ्गस्य ” अधिकार:, and would normally have to wait till an अङ्गम् is created (by adding a प्रत्यय:)। But the use of “धातोः” in 7-1-58 is taken as an indication that this rule is to be applied as soon as the धातु: is taken for use from the धातु-पाठ: – without waiting for any other operation.
As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः the नुँम्-आगमः attaches itself after the last vowel (अकार:) of “कप्”।

= क न् प् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
= कंप् । By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.
= कम्प् । By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

The इत् letter (इकार:) of “कपिँ” has a अनुदात्त-स्वर:। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् √कम्प् will get आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √कम्प् can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झ”।

(1) कम्प् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) कम्प् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) कम्प् + झ । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झ” as the substitute for the लकारः। “झ” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

(4) कम्प् + झे । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

(5) कम्प् + शप् + झे । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(6) कम्प् + अ + झे । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(7) कम्प् + अ + अन्ते । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः -“अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

(8) कम्पन्ते । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

Questions:

1. Where has 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः been used in Chapter One of the गीता?

2. Which word used in the verse has the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-38 तद्धितश्चासर्वविभक्तिः?

3. Where has 7-3-109 जसि च been used?

4. Where else (besides in प्रथम-पुरुष:, बहुवचनम्) is 6-1-97 अतो गुणे used in the conjugation table of √कम्प् in लँट्?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The leaves of all the trees are shaking due to the wind.” Use the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “वायु” for “wind.” Use the तृतीया विभक्ति: to express the meaning “due to.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This rule has one exception.” Since there is no verb directly available in Sanskrit for “to have”, the sentence should be paraphrased to “Of this rule, there exists one exception.” Use the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “अपवाद” for “exception” and the verbal root √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२) for “to exist.”

Easy questions:

1. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the टि-सञ्ज्ञा (referred to in 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे)?

2. Where has the अस्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् been used in the verse?
