Today we will look at the form भवत 2Ap-लोँट् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 2-45-14.

Gita Press translation “Return, O swift steeds, of excellent breed drawing the chariot conveying Śrī Rāma, and be friendly to your master (since by taking Śrī Rāma against our wishes you will be doing a disservice to him); you ought not to proceed further.”

भवत is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १)

In the धातु-पाठः, the भू-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the भू-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So भू-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is मध्यम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “थ”।

By 3-3-162 लोट् च , the affix लोँट् comes after a धातुः when used in the sense of command/request.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “थ” as the substitute for the लकारः। “थ” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 3-4-85 लोटो लङ्वत्‌ , लोँट् is treated like लँङ् । लँङ् is a ङित्-लकार: (it has ङकार: as an इत्)। The तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः तस्, थस्, थ and मिप् of a लकारः which is an ङित्, are replaced by ताम्, तम्, त and अम् respectively by  3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः । Since लोँट् is treated like लँङ्, the थ-प्रत्ययः of लोँट् also is replaced by “त”। “त” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। See question 4.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

Questions:

1. Who is the subject of the verb

2. Why doesn’t the मिप्-प्रत्यय: of लोँट् get replaced by “अम्” as per 3-4-85 लोटो लङ्वत्‌, 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः?

3. In the सूत्रम् 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः there are four items being replaced by four substitutes. Which सूत्रम् tells us that the substitution is to be done “respectively – in order of enumeration”?

4. Why did the entire थ-प्रत्यय: get replaced by “त” in step 4? (Why didn’t 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य apply?)

5. Can you spot a शतृँ-प्रत्यय: in the verse?

6. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used?

7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“All of you be ready for war.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “सज्ज” for “ready” and the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “युद्ध” (use चतुर्थी-विभक्ति:) for “war.”

8. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Be attentive!” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “सावधान” for “attentive.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सुत्रम् 8-3-22 हलि सर्वेषाम् been used?

2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get राम + अम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) = रामम्?

  1. Questions:
    1. Who is the subject of the verb
    Answer: The विवक्षा here is लोँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम् । By 1-4-105 युष्मद्युपपदे समानाधिकरणे स्थानिन्यपि मध्यमः, the subject can only be युष्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम्। Since the विवक्षा is बहुवचनम्, the subject has to be यूयम्। Here it refers to तुरङ्गमाः (steeds).

    2. Why doesn’t the मिप्-प्रत्यय: of लोँट् get replaced by “अम्” as per 3-4-85 लोटो लङ्वत्‌, 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः?
    Answer: मिप्-प्रत्यय: of लोँट् does not get replaced by “अम्” as per 3-4-85 लोटो लङ्वत्‌, 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंताम because of 3-4-89 मेर्निः (The affix “मि” of लोँट् is substituted by “नि”)। 3-4-89 मेर्निः is an अपवादः to 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः ।

    3. In the सूत्रम् 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः there are four items being replaced by four substitutes. Which सूत्रम् tells us that the substitution is to be done “respectively – in order of enumeration”?
Answer: 1-3-10 यथासंख्यमनुदेशः समानाम् – The assignment of equally enumerated items follows the order of their enumeration.

    4. Why did the entire थ-प्रत्यय: get replaced by “त” in step 4? (Why didn’t 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य apply?)
Answer: The त-आदेशः has two letters (अल्) – तकारः and अकारः। Therefore it is अनेकाल्। Hence, the entire थ-प्रत्यय: get replaced by “त” in step 4 because of 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य – A substitute (आदेश:) which is अनेकाल् (has more than one letter) or has श् as a marker, takes the place of the entire term which is in the sixth case (in the सूत्रम् which prescribes the substitution.)
    1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य is an अपवाद: to 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।

    5. Can you spot a शतृँ-प्रत्यय: in the verse?
    Answer: वहन्तः is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् of प्रातिपदिकम् “वहत्”, which is a शतृँ-प्रत्ययान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् derived from the वह्-धातु:।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः stops the सकारः of जस्-प्रत्ययः from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, a non-verbal base with an उक् (उ, ऋ, ऌ) as a marker takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix.

    6. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used?
    भर्तर् + ङि | 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः – ऋत् (short ऋ) ending अङ्गम् gets a गुणः replacement, when followed by the affix “ङि” or an affix with the designation सर्वनामस्थानम् | By 1-1-51 उरण् रँपरः in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (अ, इ, उ) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ letter.

    Answer: The सुत्रम् 8-3-22 हलि सर्वेषाम् has been used in सन्धि-कार्यम् between हिता:, भवत।
8-3-22 हलि सर्वेषाम्, when a हल् letter follows then in the opinion of all teachers the letter य् at the end of a पदम् drops, when it is preceded by the letter अ (long or short.)

    2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get राम + अम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) = रामम्?
