  1. 1. Can you recall another प्रातिपदिकम् (that we have studied) for which the सूत्रम् 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य applies in the षष्ठी-एकवचनम् (and also in पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्)?
    Answer: प्रातिपदिकम् “सखि”।
    सखि + ङसिँ/ङस् । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…।
    सखि + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः।
    सख्य् अस् । 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    सख्युस् । 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य
    सख्युः । 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर् विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Which of the following statement is true?
    a) 6-1-77 इको यणचि belongs to the “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” अधिकार: but 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य doesn’t.
    b) 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य belongs to the “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” अधिकार: but 6-1-77 इको यणचि doesn’t.
    c) Both 6-1-77 इको यणचि and 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य belong to the “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” अधिकार:।
    d) Neither 6-1-77 इको यणचि nor 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य belongs to the “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” अधिकार:।
    Answer:d) Neither 6-1-77 इको यणचि nor 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य belongs to the “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” अधिकार:।
    “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” अधिकार: runs from 6-1-84 एकः पूर्वपरयोः up to 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌।

    3. Why was no सन्धि-कार्यम् done between जाये + उत्तानपादस्य? (Why didn’t 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः etc. apply?)
Answer: जाये is प्रथमा-द्विवचनम् of प्रातिपदिकम् “जाया” | By 1-1-11 ईदूदेद्द्विवचनं प्रगृह्यम् final “ए” of जाये get प्रगृह्यसंज्ञा | And by 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि vowels which are designated as “प्रगृह्य” retain their natural state when followed by a vowel. This means that no सन्धि: operations are performed. 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः is stopped from applying.

    4. In the षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of हरि-शब्द: we apply 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति (followed by 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च) to get the final form हरे:। Why didn’t पति-शब्द: go through the same steps?
Answer: The requirement for applying 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति is that अङ्गम् should have the घि-सञ्ज्ञा |
But according to 1-4-8 पतिः समास एव the word “पति” gets the घि-सञ्ज्ञा only when it is part of a compound. That’s why we couldn’t apply 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति here.

    5. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य used in Chapter 11 of the गीता?

    Answer: तस्मात्प्रणम्य प्रणिधाय कायंप्रसादये त्वामहमीशमीड्यम्‌।
    पितेव पुत्रस्य सखेव सख्युः प्रियः प्रियायार्हसि देव सोढुम्‌॥ 11-44 ||
    प्रातिपदिकम् “सखि”, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्। (See derivation in Answer 1 above.)

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Even death is better than disgrace.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “श्रेयस्” for “better” and the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “अपमान” for “disgrace.”
    Answer: मृत्युः अपि अपमानात् श्रेयान् = मृत्युरप्यपमानाच्छ्रेयान्।

    अथवा-

    मरणम् अपि अपमानात् श्रेयः = मरणमप्यपमानाच्छ्रेयः ।

    7. Please state the one synonym for “ध्रुव:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “ध्रुव” masculine, meaning “Dhruva – the polar star, but personified in mythology as the son of Uttāna-pāda”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
    ध्रुव औत्तानपादिः स्यात् ।।१-३-२०।।
    (इति द्वे “ध्रुवस्य” नामनी)
    Answer: औत्तानपादिः (प्रातिपदिकम् “औत्तानपादि” masculine)

    Advanced question:

    1. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – पञ्चमीनिर्देशादेव परस्येति लब्धे परस्येति ग्रहणम् “एकः पूर्वपरयो:” इति निवृत्तमिह तु नाधिक्रियते इति ध्वननार्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: “पञ्चमीनिर्देशादेव परस्येति लब्धे।” By using पञ्चमी-विभक्तिः (in ख्यात्यात्) it is understood that the operation is to be done on the term that follows the term which is in पञ्चमी। (ref: 1-1-67 तस्मादित्युत्तरस्य)। Then why has Panini still introduced the term “परस्य” in the सूत्रम् 6-1-112 ख्यत्यात्‌ परस्य? In order to indicate (ध्वननार्थम्) the end (निवृत्तम्) of the “एकः पूर्वपरयो:” अधिकारः। So “एकः पूर्वपरयो:” अधिकार: does not come (नाधिक्रियते) in to 6-1-112.

    Easy questions:
    1. Why didn’t the ending सकार: of the ङस्-प्रत्यय: get the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् ?
    Answer: By 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्मा: any letter of the त-class (त्, थ्, द्, ध्, न्) or the letter स् or म् which is in a विभक्ति: does not get the designation इत् । And ङस्-प्रत्यय: is a विभक्ति: by the सूत्रम् 1-4-104 विभक्तिश्च | That’s why the letter स् of ङस् doesn’t get the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा |

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-104 ओसि च been used in the verse?
    Answer: In तयोः (प्रातिपदिकम् “तद्” षष्ठी-द्विवचनम्)।
    तद् + ओस् । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…|
    त अ + ओस् । By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, तद् gets the अकारादेशः । As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य , only the ending दकार: gets replaced.
    त + ओस् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे the अकारः at the end of “त” and the following अकारादेशः is replaced by अकार: (पररूपम्) as एकादेशः ।
    ते + ओस् । By 7-3-104 ओसि च , the ending अकार: of an अङ्गम् changes to एकार: when followed by the affix ओस् ।
    तयोस् । अयादेशः by 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः ।
    तयोः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः ।

    3. Which सूत्रम् was used to get न + इतरा = नेतरा?

    Answer: 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।
