Gita Press translation “Now there will be born to you, may you be blessed, three sons embodying our rays, who will themselves be celebrated throughout the world; O dear sage, and shall spread your fame too. Having thus granted the boon sought after by him, and duly worshipped by the Brāhmaṇa couple (Atri and his wife), the three Rulers of the gods returned thence (each to His own abode) even as the couple stood looking on with wide open eyes.”

भवितारः is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १)

In the धातु-पाठः, √भू has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √भू takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √भू can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “इट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।
See question 2.

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term “झि” is replaced by “रस्”। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “रस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-4-51 रि च, when followed by an affix beginning with a रेफ:, there is a लोप: elision of the सकार: of the “तास्”-प्रत्यय: and of √अस् (असँ भुवि २.

Questions:

1. Has the सूत्रम् 7-4-51 रि च (used in step 11) been used in the गीता?

2. Is the धातु: √भू अनुदात्तोपदेश:?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-51 रि च (used in step 11), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – अस्तिस्तु नेह सम्बध्यते। Please explain.

4. Where has 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि been used in the verses?

5. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः (used in step 6), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – “नेड् वशि कृति” इत्यत इडित्यनुवर्तमाने पुनरिड्ग्रहणं निषेधसम्बद्धस्येटो निवृत्त्यर्थम्। Please explain.

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“There will be a tenth Avatara of Lord Vishnu called Kalki.” Use the अव्ययम् “इति” (end-quote) to express the meaning of “called.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “दशम” for “tenth.”

  1. Questions:

    1. Has the सूत्रम् 7-4-51 रि च (used in step 11) been used in the गीता?
Answer: No. In the गीता, लुँट् has been used in only two words – भविता and जेतासि। 7-4-51 रि च is not applicable in either one.

    2. Is the धातु: √भू अनुदात्तोपदेश:?
Answer: धातु: √भू is NOT अनुदात्तोपदेश। The following couplet gives a list of those verbal roots which end in a vowel and are NOT अनुदात्ता:।

In the धातु-पाठ:, all the verbal roots which have a single vowel and which end in a vowel are अनुदात्ता:, EXCEPT the following:
    (1) Those which end in a ऊकार:।
    (2) Those which end in a ॠकार:।

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-51 रि च (used in step 11), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – अस्तिस्तु नेह सम्बध्यते। Please explain.
    Answer: According to the सूत्रम् 7-4-51 रि च, when followed by an affix beginning with a रेफ:, there is a लोप: elision of the सकार: of the “तास्”-प्रत्यय: and of √अस् (असँ भुवि २. The अनुवृत्ति: of “तासस्त्यो:” (in place of both “तास्” and “अस्ति”) comes in to 7-4-51. means that 7-4-51 does not apply to √अस् (असँ भुवि २. It only applies to “तास्”। The reason is “तस्य रादिप्रत्ययस्यासम्भवात्” – there is no case in which a प्रत्यय: beginning with a रेफ: follows the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २.

    4. Where has 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि been used in the verses?
    Answer: 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि has been used in the verses in the form प्रतिजग्मुः derived from the धातुः √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.
By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
    1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘उस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि, the उपधा (penultimate letter – ref. 1-1-65 अलोऽन्त्यात् पूर्व उपधा) of the verbal roots √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ८१२) is elided, when followed by an अजादि-प्रत्ययः (affix beginning with a vowel) which is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) with the exclusion of the affix ‘अङ्’।
Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत् – is considered to be a कित् (as having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence, ‘उस्’ is a कित् affix here. This allows 6-4-98 to apply.

    ‘प्रति’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    5. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः (used in step 6), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – “नेड् वशि कृति” इत्यत इडित्यनुवर्तमाने पुनरिड्ग्रहणं निषेधसम्बद्धस्येटो निवृत्त्यर्थम्। Please explain.
    Answer: “नेड् वशि कृति” इत्यत इडित्यनुवर्तमाने means that the अनुवृत्ति: of “इट्” is coming in to 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः from the सूत्रम् 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति। This being the case, what is the need for “पुनरिड्ग्रहणम्” – to again mention “इट्” in 7-2-35? The reason पाणिनि: does this is “निषेधसम्बद्धस्येटो निवृत्त्यर्थम्” meaning that the अनुवृत्ति: of “इट्” coming down from the सूत्रम् 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति is connected with the निषेध: “न”। It is to discontinue the निषेध: “न” that पाणिनि: does not take the अनुवृत्ति: and instead re-introduces “इट्” in 7-2-35.

    Easy questions:

    1. Can you spot a place in the verses where a सन्धि-कार्यम् has not been done?
Answer: (In order to obey the meter) सन्धि-कार्यम् has not been done between ते and आत्मजाः। The form would have been as follows:
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 8-3-19 लोपः शाकलस्य। After this 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    2. Where has 7-3-104 ओसि च been used in the verses?
    Answer: 7-3-104 ओसि च has been used in the verses in the form तयोः।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 7-3-104 ओसि च – The ending अकार: of a अङ्गम् is replaced by एकार: when followed by the affix “ओस्”।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
