Gita Press translation – The sages said : Singular are Your doings, O Lord, in that while You perform deeds Yourself, You are not affected by them. You do not think much even of Lakṣmī (the supreme goddess) whom everyone worships for the sake of prosperity, even though She Herself remains ever waiting on You.
The Siddhas said : Scorched by the wild fire of afflictions and oppressed by the thirst for sensuous enjoyment, this elephant of our mind has plunged into the river of pure nectar in the shape of Your stories and thinks no more of that forest conflagration nor comes out of the river, like one that has attained (oneness with) Brahma.”

सस्मार is derived from the धातुः √स्मृ (स्मृ चिन्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, √स्मृ has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √स्मृ takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √स्मृ can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्, hence the प्रत्ययः is तिप्।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् , the affix लिँट् (Perfect Tense) comes after a verbal root in the sense of the past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। By 3-4-115 लिट् च, a तिङ्-प्रत्यय: which comes in place of लिँट् gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore “तिप्” gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। This prevents 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ (which requires a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: to follow) from applying.

By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः, when they come in place of लिँट्, the nine परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: – “तिप्”, “तस्”, “झि”, “सिप्”, “थस्”, “थ”, “मिप्”, “वस्” and “मस्” – are substituted by “णल्”, “अतुस्”, “उस्”, “थल्”, “अथुस्”, “अ”, “णल्”, “व” and “म” respectively.

By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य, when लिँट् follows a verbal root, there is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of the verbal root which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः

By 7-4-66 उरत्‌, a ऋवर्ण: of the अभ्यास: (reduplicate) takes the अकारादेश: when a प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः, of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.
See question 1.

By 7-4-10 ऋतश्च संयोगादेर्गुणः, a अङ्गम् which beings with a संयोग: (conjunct consonant) and ends in a ऋकार: takes गुण: when followed by a लिँट् affix. (As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, the ending ऋकार: of the अङ्गम् takes गुण:।) By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः, a penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

  1. Questions:
    1. Why doesn’t 7-4-61 शर्पूर्वाः खयः apply in step 8? (Which condition is not satisfied?)
Answer: By 7-4-61 शर्पूर्वाः खयः, if a अभ्यास: begins with a शर्-खय् conjunct (a conjunct whose first letter belongs to the शर्-प्रत्याहार: and second letter belongs to the खय्-प्रत्याहार:) then the खय् letter is retained and all other consonants of the अभ्यास: take लोप:। In the present example, in the अभ्यास: “स्मृ”, the beginning सकारः belongs to the शर्-प्रत्याहार: but the second letter मकारः (second letter of the conjunct “स्म्”) does NOT belong to the खय्-प्रत्याहारः। Hence 7-4-61 does not apply.

    2. Where has 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses?
    Answer: 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङितिहस् has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the form अज्यसे derived from the धातुः √अन्ज् (अन्जूँ व्यक्तिम्रक्षणकान्तिगतिषु (व्यक्तिमर्षणकान्तिगतिषु) ७.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-80 थासस्से।
By 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति, the penultimate नकारः of bases that end in a consonant and that do not have इकारः as a marker, takes लोपः when followed by an affix that has ककारः or ङकारः as a marker.

    3. Can you spot a अभ्यास-लोप: in the verses?
    Answer: A अभ्यास-लोप: in the verses is seen in the form उपसेदुः derived from the धातुः √सद (षदॢँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. The beginning षकार: of “षदॢँ” is replaced by a सकार: as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः। The ending ऌकार: is a इत् as per 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य ।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence, “उस्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-120 to apply.
    “उप” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Can you spot a “रिङ्”-आदेश: in the commentary?
    Answer: A “रिङ्”-आदेश: in the commentary is seen in the form आद्रियते derived from the धातुः √दृ (दृङ् आदरे ६.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “श” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु, the ending ऋकारः (ऋत्) of an अङ्गम् is replaced by रिङ्, when followed by any one of the following:
    3. यकारादि: (beginning with a यकार:) आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः of लिँङ्।

As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ऋकार: of the अङ्गम् “दृ” gets replaced.

    “आङ्” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the दीर्घादेश: in the form निष्क्रामति?
Answer: 7-3-76 क्रमः परस्मैपदेषु is used for the दीर्घादेश: in the form निष्क्रामति।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 7-3-76 क्रमः परस्मैपदेषु, the vowel (अकार:) of the धातुः √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) is made दीर्घः (elongated) when followed by a शित्-प्रत्ययः which itself is followed by a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:।
    “निस्/निर्” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
By 8-3-41 इदुदुपधस्य चाप्रत्ययस्य। A विसर्गः, which is not part of a प्रत्यय:, is replaced by षकारः if it is preceded by an इकारः or उकारः and is followed by a consonant belonging to क-वर्गः or प-वर्गः (the अनुवृत्तिः of कुप्वोः comes in from 8-3-37 कुप्वोः ≍क≍पौ च)।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Even during the day, the gopis thought of Sri Krishna only.” Use the अव्ययम् “दिवा” for “during the day.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः has been used in the form भवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् “भवत्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)। “भवत्” ends in the डवतुँ-प्रत्यय:।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्।
By 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः – When the “सुँ” affix which is not सम्बुद्धिः follows, a base that ends in “अतुँ” or a base that ends in an “अस्” which is not of a verbal root, has its penultimate letter elongated.
Note: 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः is actually a later rule, and also an invariable rule (नित्य-कार्यम्) compared to 6-4-14. So as per 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम्, we should apply 7-1-70 before 6-4-14. But if we do that then the mention of “अतु” in 6-4-14 will become useless – it will never find application because then the उपधा will always be a नकार:। So on the basis of वचनसामर्थ्यात् we apply 6-4-14 before 7-1-70.
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य cannot be applied because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    2. What would be an alternate form for the word न: used at the end of the second verse?
Answer: An alternate form for the word न: used at the end of the second verse would be अस्माकम्। The प्रातिपदिकम् is ‘अस्मद्’। The optional form न: is allowed as per 8-1-21 बहुवचने वस्नसौ – The प्रातिपदिके “युष्मद्” and “अस्मद्” along with a plural affix of the second, fourth or sixth case, get “वस्” and “नस्” as replacements respectively when the following conditions are satisfied:
    1. There is a पदम् in the same sentence preceding “युष्मद्”/”अस्मद्”।
    2. “युष्मद्”/”अस्मद्” is not at the beginning of a metrical पाद:।
