Today we will look at the form हन्ता 3As-लुँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.1.33

Gita Press translation “As the procession of the bride and the bridegroom was just going to start, conchs, clarinets, clay tom-toms and kettledrums sounded all at once in a most auspicious manner. Addressing Kaṁsa, who held the reins while on the way, an incorporeal voice said, “O foolish one! the eighth child of this girl, whom you are (now) conducting, will slay you.”

हन्ता is derived from the धातुः √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २)

The ending अकारः (which is an इत्) of “हनँ” has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Thus √हन् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √हन् takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः
See question 3.

By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।

By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter.
Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।

By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.

By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

२) is one among two monosyllabic (having one vowel) verbal roots in the धातु-पाठ: which end in a नकार: and have a अनुदात्त-स्वर: on their vowel. Which is the other one?

4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेश: in the form नेदु:?

5. Where has 3-4-80 थासस्से been used in the verses?

  1. Questions:
    1. Can you think of a प्रातिपदिकम् which when declined पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् will give the form हन्ता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् which when declined पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् will give the form हन्ता is “हन्तृ”।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, “ऋत्” (short “ऋ”) ending terms, as well as the terms “उशनस्”, “पुरुदंसस्” and “अनेहस्” get the “अनँङ्” replacement when the “सुँ” suffix, that is not सम्बुद्धिः, follows. As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ऋकार: of “हन्तृ” is replaced.
By 6-4-11 अप्-तृन्-तृच्-स्वसृ-नप्तृ-नेष्टृ-त्वष्टृ-क्षत्तृ-होतृ-पोतृ-प्रशास्तॄणाम्, when a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix that is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the penultimate vowel of “अप्”, of words ending in affixes “तृन्” and “तृच्” and of the words “स्वसृ”, “नप्तृ”, “नेष्टृ”, “त्वष्टृ”, “क्षत्तृ”, “होतृ”, “पोतृ” and “प्रशास्तृ” is elongated.
Now “हन्तान्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    2. Where is this प्रातिपदिकम् (answer to question 1) used in Chapter Two of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् “हन्तृ” is used in Chapter Two of the गीता in the form हन्तारम् (पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) ।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “अम्” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-110 ऋतो ङि-सर्वनामस्थानयोः – The ending ऋकार: of a अङ्गम् gets a गुणः replacement, when followed by the affix “ङि” (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) or an affix with the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रँपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.
By 6-4-11 अप्-तृन्-तृच्-स्वसृ-नप्तृ-नेष्टृ-त्वष्टृ-क्षत्तृ-होतृ-पोतृ-प्रशास्तॄणाम् – When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix that is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the penultimate vowel of “अप्”, of words ending in affixes “तृन्” and “तृच्” and of the words “स्वसृ”, “नप्तृ”, “नेष्टृ”, “त्वष्टृ”, “क्षत्तृ”, “होतृ”, “पोतृ” and “प्रशास्तृ” is elongated.

२) is one among two monosyllabic (having one vowel) verbal roots in the धातु-पाठ: which end in a नकार: and have a अनुदात्त-स्वर: on their vowel. Which is the other one?
    Answer: The other one is √मन् (मनँ ज्ञाने ४.

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेश: in the form नेदु:?
    Answer: सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि is used for the एकारादेश: in the form नेदुः derived from the धातुः √नद् (भ्वादि-गणः, णदँ अव्यक्ते शब्दे, धातु-पाठः #१. The initial णकार: of “णदँ” is replaced by a नकार: by 6-1-65 णो नः – There is the substitution of नकारः in the place of the initial णकारः of a धातुः in the धातु-पाठः।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् ।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence “उस्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-120 to apply.

    5. Where has 3-4-80 थासस्से been used in the verses?
    Answer: 3-4-80 थासस्से has been used in the verses in the form वहसे derived from the धातुः √वह् (वहँ प्रापणे १.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-80 थासस्से, the “थास्”-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets “से” as the replacement.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Bharata said to Sri Rama, ‘I will not return to Ayodhya without you.’” Use the अव्ययम् “विना” for “without” and (a लिँट् form of) √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) with the उपसर्ग: “प्रति” for “to return.” Use द्वितीया विभक्ति: with “you.”

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
