Today we will look at the form वक्ता 3As-लुँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.88.34

Gita Press translation “O lord of demons, if you still repose faith in Śaṅkara as the Teacher of the world, the truth may be verified (by you) this very instant, O dear friend, by placing your hand on your own head. O chief of Asuras, if the words of Śaṅkara are found to deviate from truth in any wise, you had better do away with that liar so that he may not (live to) utter a falsehood again.”

वक्ता is derived from the धातुः √वच् (अदादि-गणः, वचँ परिभाषणे, धातु-पाठः # २. ५८)
See question 2.

In the धातु-पाठः, the धातुः √वच् has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the चकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the धातुः √वच् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √वच् takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √वच् can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्, the affix लुँट् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of future not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “तास्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः
See question 3.

By 2-4-85 लुटः प्रथमस्य डारौरसः, when they come in place of लुँट्, the third person affixes (“तिप्/त”, “तस्/आताम्”, “झि/झ”) are replaced respectively by “डा”, “रौ” and “रस्”।

By 6-4-143 टेः, when the अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, then its “टि” portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) takes लोप: when followed by an affix that has डकारः as an indicatory letter.
Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having डकार: as a इत् in “डा”।

By 8-2-30 चोः कुः 8-2-30, the consonants of the च-वर्ग: (च्, छ्, ज्, झ्, ञ्) get the consonants of the क-वर्ग: (क्, ख्, ग्, घ्, ङ्) as a replacement when they occur at the end of a पदम् or when they are followed by a झल् letter.

Questions:

  1. Questions:
    1. In the last verse of which chapter of the गीता has √वच् (अदादि-गणः, वचँ परिभाषणे, धातु-पाठः # २. ५८) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम्?
५८) has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the form उच्यते in the last verse of Chapter Seventeen of the गीता।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 6-1-15 वचिस्वपियजादीनां किति।
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।

५८)) can be used to derive the form वक्ता?
३९) can also be used to derive the form वक्ता। Recall that as per 2-4-53 ब्रुवो वचिः, “ब्रू” takes the substitution “वच्” when the intention is to add a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय:। Our intention in this example is to use the प्रत्यय: “लुँट्” which we know will bring the प्रत्यय: “तास्” (by 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः) following the धातु:। “तास्” has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः। Hence we start the derivation with
By 3-3-15 अनद्यतने लुट्।
The rest of the steps would be as given in the example above.

५८) is one among six monosyllabic (having one vowel) verbal roots in the धातु-पाठ: which end in a चकार: and have a अनुदात्त-स्वर: on their vowel. Which are the other five?
    Answer: The other five are: √पच् (डुपचँष् पाके १.

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “ज”-आदेश: in the form जहि?
    Answer: 6-4-36 हन्तेर्जः is used for the “ज”-आदेश: in the form जहि derived from the धातुः √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २)
By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 6-4-36 हन्तेर्जः, when followed by the हि-प्रत्ययः “हन्” gets “ज” as the replacement. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term “हन्” is replaced by “ज”। Now by 6-4-105 अतो हेः, the हि-प्रत्ययः should have taken elision. But since both 6-4-36 and 6-4-105 belong to the अधिकारः of 6-4-22 असिद्धवदत्राभात्, the “ज”-आदेश: that was done by 6-4-36 is not seen by 6-4-105. Only “हन्” is seen by 6-4-105 and therefore there is no elision of the हि-प्रत्ययः here and the form remains as जहि।
Note: Both 6-4-36 and 6-4-105 prescribe an operation that involves the हि-प्रत्यय:। Since they are both based on a common element, 6-4-22 comes into effect.

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः has been used in the verses in the form प्रतीयताम् derived from the धातुः √इ (इण् गतौ २.
Since the विवक्षा is भावे (impersonal passive), only आत्मनेपदम् can be used as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, when denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि), आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः are used in the place of a लकार:। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। भावे-प्रयोग: is always प्रथम-पुरुष:, एकवचनम् since it denotes an action. Hence the प्रत्यय: will be “त”।
By 3-3-162 लोट् च, the affix लोँट् comes after a धातुः when used in the sense of command/request.
    = इ + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-90 आमेतः, the एकार: of लोँट् is replaced by “आम्”। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “ताम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
By 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः, the ending vowel of an अङ्गम् is elongated when followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with a यकार:, as long as the प्रत्यय: neither has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा nor the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा।

    Note: ‘प्रति’ has been used as a उपसर्ग: (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I will always speak the truth.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-119 अच्च घेः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-119 अच्च घेः has been used in the verses in the form जगद्‍गुरौ (प्रातिपदिकम् “जगद्‍गुरु”, पुंलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्यां…। The अङ्गम् “जगद्‍गुरु” has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि – When a short “इ” ending or short “उ” ending term – except for “सखि” – does not have the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा then it gets the घि-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-119 अच्च घेः – Following a short “इ” or short “उ” ending अङ्गम्, the affix “ङि” is replaced by “औ” and the (ending letter “इ” or “उ” of the) अङ्गम् which has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा is replaced by short “अ”।
By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।

    2. In the verses, can you spot a word wherein अन्वादेश: has been used?
    Answer: अन्वादेश: has been used in the word एनम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्” or “एतद्”, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)। (In the verses we have तदा + एनम् = तदैनम् by 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 2-4-34 द्वितीयाटौस्स्वेनः, “इदम्” and “एतद्” get “एन” as the replacement when followed by the affixes of the second case or the affix “टा” or “ओस्”, when used in अन्वादेश:। Note: अन्वादेश: (अनु + आदेश:) (re-employment or after-statement) means a second reference to one and the same item already referred to by an earlier word.
By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः, in place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix अम् there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter. In this case, in place of the ending अकार: of “एन” and the following अकार: of “अम्” there is a single substitute which is the prior अकार:।
