पृच्छताम् mGp

Today we will look at the form पृच्छताम् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 11-07-30

त्वं हि नः पृच्छतां ब्रह्मन्नात्मन्यानन्दकारणम् ।
ब्रूहि स्पर्शविहीनस्य भवतः केवलात्मनः ।। ११-०७-३० ।।

Gita Press translation “(Pray,) tell us, who are making this enquiry, O Brāhmaṇa, the cause of the joy abiding in your mind, even though you are living singly and are devoid of enjoyment (of the pleasures of sense).”

‘पृच्छत्’ is a शतृँ-प्रत्ययान्त-शब्द: derived from the धातु: “प्रच्छ्”।

‘पृच्छत्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्। 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पृच्छत्’

(1) पृच्छत् + आम् ।

(2) पृच्छताम् ।

Questions:

1. In this example, the अङ्गम् “पृच्छत्” has:
a) पद-सञ्ज्ञा
b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा
c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा
d) Both पद-सञ्ज्ञा and भ-सञ्ज्ञा

2. Where has the युष्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् been used in this verse?

3. Please list the eleven synonyms for the word “आनन्द:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आनन्द” masculine, meaning “happiness”) as given in the अमरकोश:। We have already seen these in a prior example. (Search this web site for “आनन्द”)

4. Why didn’t the ending नकार: of (हे) ब्रह्मन् take लोप: as per 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य?

5. The word “आत्मनि” used in the verse is the सप्तमी-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “आत्मन्”। आत्मन् + ङि = आत्मनि। Here आत्मन् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। Then why didn’t the अकार: in आत्मन् take लोप: as per 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः?

6. Use a verb from the verse to construct the following sentence in Sanskrit: “Tell us the cause of your anxiety.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “उद्वेग” for “anxiety.”

7. The form “नः” can be the द्वितीया/चतुर्थी/षष्ठी-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “अस्मद्”। Which one (among the three choices) is it in this verse?

8. Can you spot a place where a सूत्रम् from the first quarter of the seventh chapter of the अष्टाध्यायी has been used?

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in this verse?

2. How about 6-1-77 इको यणचि?

  1. Questions:
    1. In this example, the अङ्गम् “पृच्छत्” has:
    a) पद-सञ्ज्ञा
    b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    d) Both पद-सञ्ज्ञा and भ-सञ्ज्ञा

    b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा – because आम् (which does not have the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा) is an अजादि-प्रत्यय:, the सूत्रम् 1-4-18 यचि भम् applies to give the भ-सञ्ज्ञा to the अङ्गम्।

    2. Where has the युष्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् been used in this verse?
    त्वम् (युष्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    3. Please list the eleven synonyms for the word “आनन्द:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आनन्द” masculine, meaning “happiness”) as given in the अमरकोश:। We have already seen these in a prior example. (Search this web site for “आनन्द”)

    मुत्प्रीतिः प्रमदो हर्षः प्रमोदाऽऽमोदसम्मदाः ।।१-४-२४।।
    स्यादानन्दथुरानन्दशर्मशातसुखानि च ।
    (इति द्वादश “आनन्दस्य” नामानि)
    The 11 synonyms for आनन्दः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आनन्द’, masculine) are:

    4. Why didn’t the ending नकार: of (हे) ब्रह्मन् take लोप: as per 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य?
    नकार-लोप: of (हे) ब्रह्मन् as per 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य is stopped by 8-2-8 न ङिसम्बुद्ध्योः। Due to this निषेध-सूत्रम्, नकारः does not take लोपः, when ङि or the सम्बुद्धिः affix follows.
In the present case सम्बुद्धि: has been used – so 8-2-8 stops 8-2-7.

Because of the निषेध-सूत्रम् 6-4-137 न संयोगाद्वमन्तात् which says that the अकारः of अन् does not take लोपः (as ordained by 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः), when it follows a conjunct that has वकारः or मकारः as its last member.
    In this case the “अन्” in “आत्मन्” (= आत्म् अन्) is preceded by a conjunct ending in a मकार:।

    6. Use a verb from the verse to construct the following sentence in Sanskrit: “Tell us the cause of your anxiety.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “उद्वेग” for “anxiety.”
    तव उद्वेगस्य कारणम् नः ब्रूहि = तवोद्वेगस्य कारणं नो ब्रूहि।

    7. The form “नः” can be the द्वितीया/चतुर्थी/षष्ठी-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “अस्मद्”। Which one (among the three choices) is it in this verse?
    “नः” is used in षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्। It has समानाधिकरणम् with पृच्छताम्। Commentator gives न: = अस्माकम्।
    अस्मद् + आम् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…) = नस् (8-1-21 बहुवचने वस्नसौ) = नः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    8. Can you spot a place where a सूत्रम् from the first quarter of the seventh chapter of the अष्टाध्यायी has been used?
    7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः is used to form स्पर्शविहीनस्य, प्रातिपदिकम् “स्पर्शविहीन”, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।
    स्पर्शविहीन+ ङस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…) = स्पर्शविहीनस्य (7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः replaces the ङस्-प्रत्यय: by “स्य”)

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in this verse?
    Between ब्रह्मन् + आत्मनि forming ब्रह्मन्नात्मनि।

    2. How about 6-1-77 इको यणचि?
    Between आत्मनि + आनन्दकारणम् forming आत्मन्यानन्दकारणम्।
