दृश्यते 3Ps-लँट्

Today we will look at the form दृश्यते 3Ps-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb8-14-10.

स्तूयमानो जनैरेभिर्मायया नामरूपया ।
विमोहितात्मभिर्नानादर्शनैर्न च दृश्यते ।। ८-१४-१० ।।

Gita Press translation “Though depicted (diversely) by these (so-called learned) people – whose understanding is (as a matter of fact) deluded by Māyā, consisting of (so many) names and forms – through different systems of philosophy, the Lord is (actually) not perceived (by them).”

दृश्यते is derived from the verbal root √दृश् (भ्वादि-गणः, दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे , धातु-पाठः #१. ११४३)

The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

By 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, when denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि), आत्मनेपदम् affixes are used in the place of a लकार:। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine affixes from ‘त’ to ‘महिङ्’ get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So in कर्मणि प्रयोगः, only one of these nine affixes can be used.

(1) दृश् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a verbal root when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) दृश् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) दृश् + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। ‘त’ gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the ‘धातो:’ अधिकार:।

(4) दृश् + ते । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपदम् affix which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets the letter ‘ए’ as the replacement.

(5) दृश् + यक् + ते । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्, the affix यक् follows a verbal root when a सार्वधातुकम् affix follows denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि)। ‘यक्’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्द्धधातुकं शेषः

(6) दृश्यते । By 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्‍तलघूपधस्‍य च

Questions:

1. Where is √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३) used with लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग: in the गीता?

2. Why didn’t 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः apply in this example? (Which condition was not satisfied?)

3. Where is 7-1-11 नेदमदसोरकोः used in the verse?

4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I have seen you before somewhere.” Use “पूर्वम्” as an adverb for “before” and the अव्ययम् combination “कुत्रापि” for “somewhere.”

5. How would you say this (sentence above) in the passive?
“You were seen by me before somewhere.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Even though obvious still people don’t see this.” Use the अव्ययम् combination “यद्यपि” for “even though”, the अव्ययम् combination “तथापि” for “still” and the adjective “स्पष्ट” for “obvious.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has 7-3-105 आङि चापः been used in the verse?

2. Can you recall a निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition rule) for 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्?

  1. 1. Where is √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३) used with लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग: in the गीता?
    Answer: √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३) is used (with the उपसर्ग: “सम्”) in सन्दृश्यन्ते = सम्√दृश् + लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

    2. Why didn’t 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां
पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः apply in this example? (Which condition was not satisfied?)
    Answer: 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः (when followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्, the verbal roots “√पा (पा पाने १. १६३)” get “पिब, जिघ्र, धम, तिष्ठ, मन, यच्छ, पश्य, ऋच्छ, धौ, शीय and सीद” as replacements respectively) did not apply in this example because “यक्” प्रत्ययः does not begin with शकार: as an इत् ।

    3. Where is 7-1-11 नेदमदसोरकोः used in the verse?
    Answer: 7-1-11 नेदमदसोरकोः is used in the formation of एभिः (पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम् ) from the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इदम्’।
    इदम् + भिस् । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..
    इद अ + भिस् । By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, इदम् gets the अकारादेशः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य , only the ending मकार: gets replaced. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of भिस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
    इद् अ + भिस् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, the अकारः at the end of ‘इद’ and the following अकारादेशः is replaced by अकारः (पररूपम्) as एकादेशः ।
    अ + भिस् । By 7-2-113 हलि लोपः, the इद् of इदम् that is without the ककारः takes लोपः, when the विभक्तिः affixes of the आप्-प्रत्याहारः, which begin with a consonant, follow. By the परिभाषा नानर्थकेऽलोन्त्यविधिरनभ्यासविकारे**, the ‘इद्’ part completely takes लोपः and not just the दकारः of ‘इद्’।
[ ** This परिभाषा means that the rule 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य does not apply in the case of a term that is devoid of meaning, except in the case which involves modification of an अभ्यास:।
In this example, the entire term इदम् has meaning but the इद् part doesn’t. So 1-1-52 will not apply when it comes to operating on the इद् part. Therefore, the इद् part completely takes लोपः by 7-2-113.]
    Also by 7-1-11 नेदमदसोरकोः – भिस् does not get ऐस् as a replacement, when it follows इदम् or अदस् , that is without a ककारः। This is a negation of 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् ।
ए + भिस् । By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत्, by which the ending “अ” of a प्रातिपदिकम् is changed to “ए” when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter. 1-1-21 आद्यन्तवदेकस्मिन्, states that an operation should be performed on a single letter as upon an initial letter or upon a final letter. This allows us to consider the single letter अङ्गम् (अ) as an अदन्तम् अङ्गम् (an अङ्गम् ending in an अकार:)।
    एभिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः ।

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I have seen you before somewhere.” Use “पूर्वम्” as an adverb for “before” and the अव्ययम् combination “कुत्रापि” for “somewhere.”
    Answer: अहम् भवन्तम्/त्वाम् कुत्रापि पूर्वम् अपश्यम् = अहं भवन्तं/त्वां कुत्रापि पूर्वमपश्यम् ।

    5. How would you say this (sentence above) in the passive?
“You were seen by me before somewhere.”
    Answer: मया भवान् कुत्रापि पूर्वम् अदृश्यत । = मया भवान् कुत्रापि पूर्वमदृश्यत ।
    अथवा –
    मया त्वम् कुत्रापि पूर्वम् अदृश्यथाः । = मया त्वं कुत्रापि पूर्वमदृश्यथाः ।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Even though obvious still people don’t see this.” Use the अव्ययम् combination “यद्यपि” for “even though”, the अव्ययम् combination “तथापि” for “still” and the adjective “स्पष्ट” for “obvious.”
    Answer: यद्यपि स्पष्टम् तथापि जनाः इदम् न पश्यन्ति = यद्यपि स्पष्टं तथापि जना इदं न पश्यन्ति ।

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has 7-3-105 आङि चापः been used in the verse?
    Answer: 7-3-105 आङि चापः has been used to form मायया (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “माया”; तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।
    माया + टा (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..)
    माया + आ (1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    माये + आ (7-3-105 आङि चापः – आप् ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix आङ् (टा) or ओस्)
    मायया (6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।)

    Similarly in नामरूपया (प्रातिपदिकम् “नामरूपा”; स्त्रीलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।

    2. Can you recall a निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition rule) for 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्?
    Answer: निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition rule) for 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् is 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः – any letter of the त-वर्ग: (त्, थ्, द्, ध्, न्) or the letter स् or म् which is in a विभक्ति: does not get the designation इत् ।
