Today we will look at the form जग्राह 3As-लिँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 1.16.5

Gita Press translation “Why did the king (merely) subdue the spirit of the Kali age in the course of his conquest (instead of killing him outright and thus ridding humanity of his evil influence, once for all)? For though disguised as a prince, he was after all a vile Śūdra, who took into his head to strike a cow and a bull with his foot. Therefore, O blessed one, tell me all that, if it is connected with the story of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.”

जग्राह is derived from the धातुः √ग्रह् (क्र्यादि-गणः, ग्रहँ उपादाने, धातु-पाठः # ९.७१)

The अकारः at the end of “ग्रहँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। This इत् letter has स्वरित-स्वरः and hence this धातु: is उभयपदी। Here it has taken a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:।

The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्, hence the प्रत्ययः is तिप्।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् , the affix लिँट् (Perfect Tense) comes after a verbal root in the sense of the past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। By 3-4-115 लिट् च, a तिङ्-प्रत्यय: which comes in place of लिँट् gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore “तिप्” gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: This prevents 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना (which requires a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: to follow) from applying.

By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः, when they come in place of लिँट्, the nine परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: – “तिप्”, “तस्”, “झि”, “सिप्”, “थस्”, “थ”, “मिप्”, “वस्” and “मस्” – are substituted by “णल्”, “अतुस्”, “उस्”, “थल्”, “अथुस्”, “अ”, “णल्”, “व” and “म” respectively.

By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य , when लिँट् follows a verbal root, there is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of the verbal root which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः, of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, in a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), a letter of the कवर्गः or हकारः is replaced by a letter of the चवर्गः । The substitutions take place as per 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः

By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः, a penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

Questions:

  1. Questions:
७१) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in Chapter Nine of the गीता?
७१) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in Chapter Nine of the गीता in the form निगृह्णामि
    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्, therefore the प्रत्यय: is “मिप्”।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-81 क्र्यादिभ्यः श्ना।
    Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “श्ना” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-1-16 to apply.
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि along with the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम्।

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    2. Commenting on the word अहनत् used in the verse, the commentator says अहनत् = अहन्। What does this mean?
    Answer: अहन् is derived from the धातुः √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २).
    The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्, therefore the प्रत्यय: is “तिप्”।
By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः

    “शपो लुगभावश्छान्दस: (= शपः लुक्-अभावः छान्दस:)” – means that the non-elision (लुक्-अभावः) of शप् is छान्दस: – to be found only in the वेद:। (In the classical language 2-4-72 should be applied.) Due to the non-application of 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः, we end up with the form अहनत्।

    3. Commenting on the word पदा, the commentator says पदा = पादेन। Which सूत्रम् is used to get the alternate form पदा for पादेन? (We have not discussed this सूत्रम् in the class, but we’ve seen it in a prior post. It is in the first quarter of Chapter Six of the अष्टाध्यायी।)
    Answer: The form पदा is formed from the प्रातिपदिकम् “पाद” । The सूत्रम् 6-1-63 पद्दन्नोमाशृन्निशसन्यूषन्दोषन्यकञ्छकन्नुदन्नासञ् छस्प्रभृतिषु is used to derive the form “पदा” ।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
By 6-1-63 पद्दन्नोमाशृन्निशसन्यूषन्दोषन्यकञ्छकन्नुदन्नासञ् छस्प्रभृतिषु, there is an optional substitution of “पद्” in place of “पाद” when followed by a सुप्-प्रत्यय: from “शस्” (द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) onward.
The टकारः of “टा” gets इत्-स़ञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-7 चुटू and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः ।

    4. Where has 6-4-51 णेरनिटि been used in the verse?
    Answer: 6-4-51 णेरनिटि has been used in the verse in the form कथ्यताम् derived from the धातुः √कथ (चुरादि-गणः, कथ वाक्यप्रबन्धे (वाक्यप्रबन्धने), धातु-पाठः # १०.
By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्। “णिच्” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
= कथ् + णिच् । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः। Note: As per 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः, the णिच्-प्रत्यय: would do a वृद्धि: substitution in place of the अकार: of the अङ्गम् “कथ्”। But this does not happen because as per 1-1-57 अचः परस्मिन् पूर्वविधौ, the लोप: done by 6-4-48 has स्थानिवद्-भाव: (it behaves like the item it replaced – अकार:) when it comes to an operation (वृद्धि:) that would be performed to the left of it. Hence as far as 7-2-116 is concerned, the उपधा of the अङ्गम् is the थकार: and hence it cannot apply.

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-4-90 आमेतः, the एकार: of लोँट् is replaced by “आम्”। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “ताम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि, the “णि”-प्रत्यय: is elided when followed by an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which does not have the augment इट्। Note: The प्रत्यय: “यक्” cannot get an “इट्”-आगम: (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः) because it does not begin with a वल् letter.

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the आकारादेश: in the form गाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “गो”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः is used for the आकारादेश: in the form गाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “गो”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
By 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः, आकारः shall be the single substitute in the place of an ओकारः and the following अकारः of affixes “अम्” and “शस्”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Why did Sri Rama subdue the ocean?”

    Easy questions:

    1. Instead of नृदेवचिह्नधृक् शूद्र:, some editions have the text as नृदेवचिह्नधृक् छूद्र:। Which सूत्रम् allows for these two optional forms?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-4-63 शश्छोऽटि (when a झय् letter precedes, then the letter “श्” is optionally substituted by the letter “छ्”, if an अट् letter follows) allows for these two optional forms नृदेवचिह्नधृक् शूद्र: and नृदेवचिह्नधृक् छूद्र:।

    2. Where has 7-2-107 अदस औ सुलोपश्च been used in the verse?
    Answer: 7-2-107 अदस औ सुलोपश्च has been used in the verse in the form असौ (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अदस्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
By 7-2-107 अदस औ सुलोपश्च – There is a substitution of औकार: in place of (the ending letter) of “अदस्” when the सुँ-प्रत्यय: follows, and the सुँ-प्रत्यय: takes लोप:। By 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending सकारः of “अदस्” gets replaced by “औ”।
Even though the सुँ-प्रत्ययः is elided, it is considered as following the अङ्गम् by 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। Since the affix “सुँ” follows, by 7-2-106 तदोः सः सावनन्त्ययोः, the दकारः of “अदौ” gets सकारः as replacement.
