The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संक्रमितुम्’ is derived from the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) along with the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’। The उकारः at the end of “क्रमुँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(1) सम् क्रम् + तुमुँन् । By 3-3-167 कालसमयवेलासु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with a word which denotes काल: (‘time.’)
Notes: The mention of only three synonyms (काल:, समय: and वेला) – rather than all – should be treated as illustrative only. This implies that other synonyms (such अवसर:) of काल: also qualify as उपपदम्।

(2) सम् क्रम् + तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) सम् क्रम् + इट् तुम् । By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “इट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

(4) सम् क्रम् + इ तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(5) सं क्रम् + इ तुम् । । By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः

(6) सङ्क्रमितुम्/संक्रमितुम् । By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य

‘संक्रमितुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।
And ‘संक्रमितुम्’ gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः – A term ending in a कृत्-प्रत्यय: ending in a मकारः or एच् (“ए”, “ओ”, “ऐ”, “औ”) is designated as an indeclinable.

(7) संक्रमितुम् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(8) संक्रमितुम् । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after an अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

Questions:

1. Where has the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) been used in the first ten verses of Chapter One of the गीता?

2. Can you recall three सूत्राणि (which we have studied) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५)?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-167 कालसमयवेलासु तुमुन् the सिद्धान्त्कौमुदी says – पर्यायोपादानमर्थोपलक्षणार्थम्। Please explain.

4. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम् the सिद्धान्त्कौमुदी says – प्रैषादिग्रहणमिहानुवर्तते। तेनेह न। भूतानि काल: पचतीति वार्ता। Please explain.

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the form गृहाय?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used in the commentary?

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) been used in the first ten verses of Chapter One of the गीता?
    Answer: The verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) been used in the first ten verses of Chapter One of the गीता in form विक्रान्तः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विक्रान्त’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) derived from the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रान्त’ is shown in answer to question 5 in the following comment – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/02/07/राहुः-mns/#comment-18340

    2. Can you recall three सूत्राणि (which we have studied) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५)?
    Answer: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) in the following सूत्राणि –
    1) 1-3-43 अनुपसर्गाद्वा – When not preceded by a उपसर्गः, the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) takes a आत्मनेपदम् affix optionally.
    2) 3-1-70 वा भ्राश-भ्लाश-भ्रमु-क्रमु-क्लमु-त्रसि-त्रुटि-लषः – The affix श्यन् is optionally placed after the following verbal roots – √भ्राश् (टुभ्राशृँ – [दीप्तौ]१. १०३३) – when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.
    3) 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with any one of the following verbal roots or their synonyms –
    4) 7-3-76 क्रमः परस्मैपदेषु – The vowel (the letter ‘अ’) of the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) is elongated when followed by a शित् affix, which itself is followed by a परस्मैपदम् affix.

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-167 कालसमयवेलासु तुमुन् the सिद्धान्त्कौमुदी says – पर्यायोपादानमर्थोपलक्षणार्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: The words कालः, समयः and वेला are synonymous (पर्यायशब्दाः)। But this does not mean that the affix तुमुँन् may be used when only one of these three specific words is the उपपदम्। The mention of only three synonyms (काल:, समय: and वेला) – rather than all – should be treated as उपलक्षणार्थम् (illustrative only.) This implies that other synonyms (such as अवसर:) of काल: also qualify as उपपदम्।

    4. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम् the सिद्धान्त्कौमुदी says – प्रैषादिग्रहणमिहानुवर्तते। तेनेह न। भूतानि काल: पचतीति वार्ता। Please explain.
Answer: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘प्रैषातिसर्गप्राप्तकालेषु’ comes down from 3-3-163 प्रैषातिसर्गप्राप्तकालेषु कृत्याश्च in to 3-3-167. Consider the sentence भूतानि काल: पचतीति वार्ता – This is just a restatement of the fact that ‘time cooks (devours) all beings.’ There is no sense of ‘direction/ordering’ (प्रैषः) or ‘granting permission’ (अतिसर्गः) or ‘proper time’ (प्राप्तकालः)। Hence the affix तुमुँन् does not apply.

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“It’s time to wake up!” Paraphrase to “This is the time to wake up.” Use the verbal root √बुध् (बुधँ अवगमने १. ९९४, बुधँ अवगमने ४. ६८) with the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’ for ‘to wake up.’
    Answer: कालः अयम् प्रबोद्धुम् = कालोऽयं प्रबोद्धुम् ।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This is not the time to cry.”
    Answer: कालः न अयम् रोदितुम् = कालो नायं रोदितुम् ।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the form गृहाय?
    Answer: The दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the form गृहाय (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृह’, चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्) is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-3-102 सुपि च।
    गृह + ङे । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    = गृह + य । By 7-1-13 ङेर्यः।
    = गृहाय । By 7-3-102 सुपि च – The ending letter ‘अ’ of a प्रातिपदिकम् is elongated if it is followed by a सुँप् affix beginning with a letter of the यञ्-प्रत्याहार:।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः has been used in the form मातरम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मातृ’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form मातरम् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/07/24/घ्नन्ति-3ap-लँट्/#comment-1170
