ज्ञातुम् ind

Today we will look at the form ज्ञातुम् ind from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 6.4.2.

तस्यैव व्यासमिच्छामि ज्ञातुं ते भगवन्यथा । अनुसर्गं यया शक्त्या ससर्ज भगवान्परः ।। ६-४-२ ।।
सूत उवाच
इति सम्प्रश्नमाकर्ण्य राजर्षेर्बादरायणिः । प्रतिनन्द्य महायोगी जगाद मुनिसत्तमाः ।। ६-४-३ ।।

श्रीधर-स्वामि-टीका
व्यासं विस्तारम् । ते त्वत्तः यया शक्त्या यथा ससर्ज तां शक्तिं तत्प्रकारं च ज्ञातुमिच्छामिअनुसर्गमनुवृत्तं सर्गम् ।। २ ।।

Gita Press translation – I desire to know from you the details of it, O glorious sage, as well as how and with what power the Supreme Lord evolved the subsequent creation (referred to in 4-30-49) (2). Sūta continued: Śuka (the son of Bādarāyaṇa), the great contemplative sage ever united with the Lord, welcomed this noble inquiry of Parīkṣit (the royal sage), on hearing and replied (as follows), O jewels among sages! (3)

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ज्ञातुम्’ is derived from the verbal root √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. ४३).

(1) ज्ञा + तुमुँन् । By 3-3-158 समानकर्तृकेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with another verbal root which denotes the sense of ‘wish/desire’, provided both actions have the same agent.

ज्ञातुमिच्छामि । The verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८) used in इच्छामि denotes ‘wish/desire.’ The common agent of both the actions of ज्ञातुम् and इच्छामि is अहम्।

(2) ज्ञा + तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

= ज्ञातुम् ।

‘ज्ञातुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।
And ‘ज्ञातुम्’ gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः – A term ending in a कृत्-प्रत्यय: ending in a मकारः or एच् (“ए”, “ओ”, “ऐ”, “औ”) is designated as an indeclinable.

(3) ज्ञातुम् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(4) ज्ञातुम् । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after an अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

Questions:

The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-3-158 समानकर्तृकेषु तुमुन् in the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says इच्छार्थेष्वेककर्तृकेषूपपदेषु धातोस्तुमुन् स्यात् । Commenting on this the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – एकेति किम्? पुत्रस्य पठनमिच्छति। And further इह सूत्रे समानकर्तृकेति पदाभावे पुत्रस्य पठितुमिच्छतीति प्रयोगः स्यात्। Please explain.

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I want to know the name of this delicious fruit.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्वादु’ for ‘delicious.’

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Who would not want to go to heaven?”
