Gita Press translation – Uddhava submitted: (Now) be pleased to tell Me, O Lord with lotus-like eyes, the process of meditation indicated in the foregoing verses – as to how, in what form and as what a seeker of Liberation should contemplate on You (31). The glorious Lord replied: Seated on a sear of moderate height (neither very high nor very low) with his body erect in a comfortable posture placing both his hands (with palm upwards) on his lap and steadying his gaze on the tip of his nose, and having fully controlled his senses, one should cleanse the passages of the life-breath by (the three processes of breath-control viz.,) Pūraka (slow inhalation) Kumbhaka (retention of breath) and Recaka (slow exhalation) and should slowly practice this course in the reverse order (i.e., by doing Recaka first, Kumbhaka next and Pūraka last of all) too (32-33).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वक्तुम्’ is derived from the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८). The अकारः at the end of “वचँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(1) वच् + तुमुँन् । By 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with any one of the following verbal roots or their synonyms –

See question 2.

(2) वच् + तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

(3) वक् + तुम् । By 8-2-30 चोः कुः

= वक्तुम् ।

‘वक्तुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।
And ‘वक्तुम्’ gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः – A term ending in a कृत्-प्रत्यय: ending in a मकारः or एच् (“ए”, “ओ”, “ऐ”, “औ”) is designated as an indeclinable.

(4) वक्तुम् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has वक्तुम् been used in the गीता?
Answer: वक्तुम् has been used in the following verse –
    वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः |
    याभिर्विभूतिभिर्लोकानिमांस्त्वं व्याप्य तिष्ठसि || 10-16||

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन् (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अर्थग्रहणमस्तिनैव सम्बध्यते। अनन्तरत्वात्। Please explain.
Answer: The सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says that the word ‘अर्थ’ in the सूत्रम् 3-4-65 connects only with ‘अस्ति’ and not with the other ten verbal roots listed in the सूत्रम्। The reason for this is अनन्तरत्वात् – because ‘अर्थ’ occurs immediately after ‘अस्ति’ in the सूत्रम्। As per this interpretation synonyms of only √अस् qualify as a उपपदम्। Synonyms of any of the other ten verbal roots don’t qualify.
Note: But Apte does not agree with this view because it would mean disqualifying many standard usages of good authors. For example कालिदास: has used न पारयाम: (synonymous with शक्नुम:) निवेदयितुम् in शाकुन्तलम् and न च वेद (synonymous with जानाति) सम्यग्द्रष्टुं न सा in रघुवंशम्। So in order to justify these usages of तुमुँन् Apte interprets ‘अर्थ’ as connecting with all the verbal roots and not just ‘अस्ति’।

    3. Where सूत्रम् prescribes the ईकारादेश: in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आसीन’?
Answer: The ईकारादेश: in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आसीन’ is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-2-83 ईदासः – When following a अङ्गम् consisting of the verbal root √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २. ११), (the letter ‘आ’ of) ‘आन’ is replaced by the letter ‘ई’।

Please refer to the following post for derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आसीन’ –

    4. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ in the commentary?
Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ is seen in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सत्’ in the form सन्। The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सत्’ is derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०).

Please refer to the answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form सन् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/25/शयानान्-map/#comment-10541

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-120 विभाषा कृवृषोः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-120 विभाषा कृवृषोः has been used in the form कृत्यम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

Please see the following post for derivation of the form कृत्यम् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/09/20/कृत्यम्-nas/

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“You ought to tell me what’s on your mind.” Paraphrase to “You ought to tell me that which is on your mind.”
    Answer: यद् तव/ते मनसि वर्तते तद् मह्यम्/मे वक्तुम् अर्हसि = यत् तव/ते मनसि वर्तते तन् मह्यं/मे वक्तुमर्हसि।
