Questions:

1. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्” used in the गीता ?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः been used in this verse?

3. How do you ask the above question (#2) in Sanskrit?
Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रयुक्त” for “has been used” and use the अव्ययम् “कुत्र” for “where.”

4. The अमर-कोश: gives eleven synonyms for the word “मार्ग:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “मार्ग” masculine, meaning “path”). One of them is पन्था: (प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्” masculine) which is used in this example. Please list the remaining ten synonyms.
अयनं वर्त्म मार्गाध्वपन्थानः पदवी सृतिः।
सरणिः पद्धतिः पद्या वर्तन्येकपदीति च ।।२-१-१५।।
(इति द्वादश “मार्गस्य” नामानि)

5. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-1-87 थो न्थः the तत्त्वबोधिनी-टीका says “स्थान्यादेशौ द्वावप्यनच्कौ।” What does this mean?

6. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा?

7. Match the columns:
i. एष:
ii. फलानि
iii. वने
iv. दुर्गम्

a) This
b) in the forest
c) which is difficult of access
d) fruits

8. Can you spot the word from the verse which has been inadvertently left out in the Gita Press English translation?

Advanced question:

1. Both 7-1-86 इतोऽत्‌ सर्वनामस्थाने and 7-1-87 थो न्थः apply when a सर्वनामस्थान-प्रत्यय: follows. Why didn’t पाणिनि: combine these two into one single सूत्रम् as “थेर्न्थ:”? (Meaning would then be – in place of “थि” substitute “न्थ”)

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् was used to get फलानि आहरताम् = फलान्याहरताम् ?

2. Can you spot the place where the सूत्रम् 6-1-132 एतत्तदोः सुलोपोऽकोरनञ्समासे हलि has been used?

  1. 1. The प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्” is used in the गीता in the following verse:
    कच्चिन्नोभयविभ्रष्टश्छिन्नाभ्रमिव नश्यति |
    अप्रतिष्ठो महाबाहो विमूढो ब्रह्मणः पथि || 6-38||

    2. In अनेन, प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, अत्र पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्।
    The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः is “अककारस्येदम इदोऽन् आपि विभक्तौ। आबिति प्रत्याहारः। ” The इद् part of इदम् that is without the ककारः gets अन् as its replacement, when the विभक्तिः affixes of the आप्-प्रत्याहारः follow. Here टा follows, which belongs to आप्-प्रत्याहारः। (आप् is the प्रत्याहारः made of the सुँप् affixes from टा until सुप्)

    3. अस्मिन् श्लोके “अनाप्यकः” इति सूत्रम् कुत्र प्रयुक्तम् = अस्मिञ्श्लोके “अनाप्यकः” इति सूत्रं कुत्र प्रयुक्तम् ?

    4. The other synonyms of मार्ग:/पन्था: are
    अयनम्, वर्त्म – neuter
    अध्वा – masculine
    पदवी, सृतिः, सरणिः, पद्धतिः, पद्या, वर्तनी, एकपदी – feminine

    5. स्थान्यादेशौ द्वावप्यनच्कौ। The पदच्छेद: of this statement is स्थान्यादेशौ द्वौ अपि अनच्कौ। The meaning is that in the सूत्रम् 7-1-87 थो न्थः the स्थानी (the term being replaced) as well as the आदेश: (the substitute) are both without an अच्। So the स्थानी is just थकार: and the आदेश: is न्थ्। In the सूत्रम् the term “थ:” is षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “थ्” and the term “न्थ:” is प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “न्थ”. The अकार: at the end of the प्रातिपदिकम् “न्थ” is only for the sake of pronunciation – उच्चारणार्थ:। So “न्थ” refers to only “न्थ्”.

    7. एष: – this; फलानि -fruits; वने – in the forest; दुर्गम् – which is difficult of access.

    8. The word “राघव” from the verse which has been inadvertently left out in the Gita Press English translation.

    Advanced:
    1. 7-1-86 इतोऽत्‌ सर्वनामस्थाने applies to पथिन्, मथिन् and ऋभुक्षिन्, which come as अनुवृत्तिः from 7-1-85 पथिमथ्यृभुक्षामात्‌। Whereas the वृत्तिः of 7-1-87 थो न्थः is “पथिमथोस् थस्य न्थादेशः स्यात्, सर्वनामस्थाने परे।” The थकारः of पथिन् and मथिन् gets न्थ् as replacement when they are followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. We can see that 7-1-87 will not apply to ऋभुक्षिन्, since there is no थकारः in it. Therefore पाणिनिः did not combine 7-1-86 and 7-1-87.

    Easy Questions:
    1. 6-1-77 इको यणचि

    2. Between एष पन्थाः । The पदच्छेदः is एषः, पन्थाः।
    एषस् + पन्थाः = एष पन्थाः (6-1-132 एतत्तदोः सुलोपोऽकोरनञ्समासे हलि)
    Here एषः is प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of “एतद्” प्रातिपदिकम्, पुंलिङ्गे।
By 6-1-132 एतत्तदोः सुलोपोऽकोरनञ्समासे हलि, the affix सुँ (nominative singular case ending) applied to the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal base) तद् or एतद् is dropped when any consonant (हल्) follows.

  2. 1. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्” used in the गीता ?
    पथि (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)
    कच्चिन्नोभयविभ्रष्टश्छिन्नाभ्रमिव नश्यति |
    अप्रतिष्ठो महाबाहो विमूढो ब्रह्मणः पथि || 6-38||

    कुत्र अस्मिन् श्लोके “अनाप्यकः” इति सूत्रम् प्रयुक्तम् = कुत्रास्मिञ्श्लोके “अनाप्यकः” इति सूत्रं प्रयुक्तम् ?

    4. The अमर-कोश: gives eleven synonyms for the word “मार्ग:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “मार्ग” masculine, meaning “path”). One of them is पन्था: (प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्” masculine) which is used in this example. Please list the remaining ten synonyms.
    अयनं वर्त्म मार्गाध्वपन्थानः पदवी सृतिः।
    सरणिः पद्धतिः पद्या वर्तन्येकपदीति च ।।२-१-१५।।
    (इति द्वादश “मार्गस्य” नामानि)
The other synonyms of मार्ग:/पन्था: are

    6. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा?
    “ऋषि” has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा।

    7. Match the columns:
    i. एष:
    ii. फलानि
    iii. वने
    iv. दुर्गम्
    a) This
    b) in the forest
    c) which is difficult of access
    d) fruits

    i. एष: – a) This
    ii. फलानि – d) fruits
    iii. वने – b) in the forest
iv. दुर्गम् – c) which is difficult of access

    8. Can you spot the word from the verse which has been inadvertently left out in the Gita Press English translation?
राघव (O Rama!) has been inadvertently left out.

    Advanced question:
    1. Both 7-1-86 इतोऽत् सर्वनामस्थाने and 7-1-87 थो न्थः apply when a सर्वनामस्थान-प्रत्यय: follows. Why didn’t पाणिनि: combine these two into one single सूत्रम् as “थेर्न्थ:”? (Meaning would then be – in place of “थि” substitute “न्थ”)
7-1-86 इतोऽत् सर्वनामस्थाने applies to पथिन्, मथिन् and ऋभुक्षिन् while 7-1-87 थो न्थः applies to पथिन् and मथिन् only. Since 7-1-87 थो न्थः does not apply to ऋभुक्षिन् (because there is no थकार: in it) the two rules cannot be combined into one.
    पथि आ + स् = पथ आ + स् (7-1-86 इतोऽत् सर्वनामस्थाने)
    पन्थ आ + स् (7-1-87 थो न्थः)
    पन्थाः (6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः, 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)
    whereas
    ऋभुक्ष आ + स् (7-1-86 इतोऽत् सर्वनामस्थाने)
    ऋभुक्षाः (6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः, 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    Easy questions:

    2. Can you spot the place where the सूत्रम् 6-1-132 एतत्तदोः सुलोपोऽकोरनञ्समासे हलि has been used?
