तपस्वी mNs

Today we will look at the form तपस्वी -mNs from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

तपःस्वाध्यायनिरतं तपस्वी वाग्विदां वरम् |
नारदं परिपप्रच्छ वाल्मीकिर्मुनिपुङ्गवम् || १-१-१||

Gita Press translation “The ascetic Vālmīki put the following question direct to Nārada, the chief of hermits, (nay) the foremost of those skilled in expression, who remains (ever) engaged in askesis and self-study (the study of the Vedas):-“

‘तपस्विन्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तपस्विन्’

(1) तपस्विन् + सुँ ।

(2) तपस्वीन् + सुँ । By 6-4-13 सौ च, the penultimate letter of words ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् is lengthened when the सुँ affix – which is not सम्बुद्धि: – follows.

(3) तपस्वीन् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(4) तपस्वीन् । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्, a single letter affix सुँ, ति or सि is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix ङी or आप्। तपस्वीन् gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्, 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्

(5) तपस्वी । By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य, the ending letter न् of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

Questions:

1. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “तपस्विन्” used in Chapter 6 of the गीता?

2. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा?

3. Where has the आम्-प्रत्यय: been used?

4. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-4-13 सौ च, the काशिका says “असम्बुद्धौ इति किम्? हे दण्डिन्।” Please explain.

5. Why is the सूत्रम् 6-4-13 सौ च required? Why not just use 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ?

6. Which term from the प्रादि-गण: (ref. 1-4-58 प्रादयः) has been used in this verse? Does it have the उपसर्ग-सञ्ज्ञा?

7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“What (is) the purpose of this सूत्रम्?” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रयोजन” for “purpose.”

8. Please state the one synonym for the word “स्वाध्याय:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “स्वाध्याय” masculine, meaning “self-study (the study of the Vedas)”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
स्वाध्यायः स्याज्जपः ।।२-७-४७।।
(इति द्वे “वेदाध्ययनस्य” नामनी)

Easy questions:

1. Derive the form “नारदम्” (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “नारद”। (Declined like राम-शब्द:)।

2. Why didn’t the ending मकार: of “वरम्” change to an अनुस्वार: by 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः? Which condition was not satisfied?

  1. 1. In the form तपस्विभ्यः, प्रातिपदिकम् “तपस्विन्”, पञ्चमी-बहुवचनम्।
    तपस्विभ्योऽधिको योगी ज्ञानिभ्योऽपि मतोऽधिकः |
    कर्मिभ्यश्चाधिको योगी तस्माद्योगी भवार्जुन || 6-46||

    तपस्विन् + भ्यस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of the भ्यस्-प्रत्यय: from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। तपस्विन् gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने)
    = तपस्विभ्यस् (नकार-लोपः by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य ) = तपस्विभ्यः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    2. The प्रातिपदिकम् “वाल्मीकि” has घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि। Here it is used as वाल्मीकिः , प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
    वाल्मीकि + सुँ (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…) = वाल्मीकि + स् (1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    = वाल्मीकिः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)
The term “मुनि” also has घि-सञ्ज्ञा, but here it is used in a compound “मुनिपुङ्गव”, which does not have घि-सञ्ज्ञा।

    3. In वाग्विदाम्, प्रातिपदिकम् “वाग्विद्”।
    वाग्विद् + आम् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…) = वाग्विदाम्।

    4. “असम्बुद्धौ इति किम्? हे दण्डिन्।” – In the vocative case if the penultimate vowel (उपधा) is made दीर्घः, then we will not get the desired form हे दण्डिन्। This explains the reason why 6-4-13 सौ च is made applicable only in the non-vocative case (असम्बुद्धौ)।

    5. By 6-4-12 इन्हन्पूषार्यम्णां शौ, the lengthening (ordained by 6-4-8) of the penultimate letter of terms ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् should be done only when the शि-प्रत्यय: follows, not when followed by other सर्वनामस्थानम् affixes. This is a नियम-सूत्रम् to 6-4-8. That is why 6-4-13 सौ च is required – so that the penultimate letter of terms ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् is lengthened when the सुँ-प्रत्यय: – which is not सम्बुद्धि: – follows.

    6. The term परि in परिपप्रच्छ belongs to the प्रादि-गणः। Here it gets उपसर्ग-सञ्ज्ञा by the 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे। By 1-4-59, when used in conjunction with a verb, the terms “प्र” etc. get the उपसर्ग-सञ्ज्ञा।

Similarly the term नि in निरतम् belongs to the प्रादि-गणः। Here it also gets उपसर्ग-सञ्ज्ञा by the 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे।

    7. अस्य सूत्रस्य किम् प्रयोजनम् = अस्य सूत्रस्य किं प्रयोजनम्।

    8. The synonym is जपः (प्रातिपदिकम् “जप”, masculine)

    Easy Questions:

    1. नारद + अम् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…) = नारदम् (6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः)

    2. By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः, when the letter म् occurs at the end of a पदम् and is followed by a हल् letter, it is replaced by an अनुस्वारः (represented by a dot.)
Here in the example, the मकारः is at the end of the पदम्, but is not followed by a हल् letter. Therefore there is no अनुस्वार-आदेशः to the मकारः।
