आशीर्भिः fIp

Today we will look at the form आशीर्भिः from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

स पुत्रान्सम्परिष्वज्य भूषयित्वा च भूषणैः |
आशीर्भिश्च प्रशस्ताभिः प्रेषयामास संयुगे || ६-६९-१५||

Gita Press translation “Closely embracing his (aforesaid) sons, nay, decking them with ornaments and enriching them with auspicious benedictions, he actually sent them out for an encounter.”

The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “आशिस्” is formed using the क्विप्-प्रत्यय: with the धातु: “शास्” along with the उपसर्गः “आङ्”। By the वार्त्तिकम् (under 6-4-34) “आशासः क्वावुपसङ्ख्यानम्”, the उपधा of “शास्” takes the इकारादेश: and we get the form “आशिस्”।
The entire क्विप्-प्रत्ययः takes सर्वापहार-लोपः as follows – the ककार: and पकार: are removed using 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् along with 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। The इकारः in the the क्विप्-प्रत्यय: is उच्चारणार्थः। The single letter वकार: that remains gets अपृक्त-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्ययः। By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य, this वकार: which is अपृक्तः takes लोपः।

The क्विप्-प्रत्यय: has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ् । By 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्, even though the क्विप्-प्रत्ययः has taken लोपः, “आशिस्” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and hence it will take the affixes सुँ, औ, जस् etc. mandated by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The विवक्षा here is तृतीया-बहुवचनम्

(1) आशिस् + भिस् । The अङ्गम् “आशिस्” gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of the भिस्-प्रत्यय: from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(2) आशिर् + भिर् । रुँ-आदेशः by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः। अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) आशीर् + भिर् । By 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः, the penultimate इक् letter (इ, उ, ऋ, ऌ) of a पदम् is elongated when the पदम् ends in a रेफ: or a वकार: of a धातु:।
Note : By the परिभाषा “क्विबन्ता धातुत्वं न जहति” , even though the क्विप्-प्रत्ययः has been added to the धातु: “शास्”, it does not lose its status of being a धातुः। Therefore we can still apply 8-2-76.

(4) आशीर्भिः । विसर्ग-आदेशः by 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् was used to replace the ending सकार: of the शस्-प्रत्यय: by a नकार: in the form “पुत्रान्”?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-106 तदोः सः सावनन्त्ययोः been used?

3. Where has the ङि-प्रत्यय: been used in the verse?

4. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-1-93 कृदतिङ् says “अत्र/सन्निहिते धात्‍वधिकारे तिङि्भन्नः प्रत्‍ययः कृत्‍संज्ञः स्‍यात् ।।” What is the significance of “अत्र/सन्निहिते”?

5. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः the काशिका says “धातोः इत्येव, अग्निः। वायुः।” What does this mean?

6. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः is a निषेध: for which सूत्रम्?

7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“How did you catch the ball with just one hand?” Use the अव्ययम् “कथम्” for “how” and “एव” for “just”, use the masculine/neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “कन्दुक” for “ball”, use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “गृहीतवत् (गृहीतवती feminine)” to express the verb “catch.”

8. The अमरकोश: gives thirty(!) synonyms for the word “युद्धम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “युद्ध” neuter, meaning “war”). One of them is संयुग: (प्रातिपदिकम् “संयुग” masculine) used in this verse. Please list the remaining twenty-nine. (Use Apte’s dictionary for help.)

Easy questions:

1. Derive the form “भूषणैः” (तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “भूषण” (declined like ज्ञान/वन-शब्द:)। (Use 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस्)।

2. Please do पदच्छेद: of स पुत्रान् and mention the relevant rules.

  1. Questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् was used to replace the ending सकार: of the शस्-प्रत्यय: by a नकार: in the form “पुत्रान्”?
    Answer: 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि ।
    पुत्र + शस् । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…… ।
    पुत्र + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of शस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
पुत्रास् । By 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः, when an अक् letter is followed by an अच् of the first (nominative) or second (accusative) case then for the two of them (अक् + अच्) there is a single substitute which is the elongated form of the first member (the अक् letter.)
पुत्रान् । By 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि, in the masculine gender, when the letter स् of the affix शस् follows a vowel which has been elongated by 6-1-102 then is replaced by the letter न् ।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-106 तदोः सः सावनन्त्ययोः been used?

    3. Where has the ङि-प्रत्यय: been used in the verse?
    Answer: संयुगे। प्रातिपदिकम् “संयुग” सप्तमी-एकवचनम्।
    संयुग + ङि4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….
    संयुग + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    संयुगे । 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    4. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-1-93 कृदतिङ् says “अत्र/सन्निहिते धात्वधिकारे तिङि्भन्नः प्रत्ययः कृत्संज्ञः स्यात् ।।” What is the significance of “अत्र/सन्निहिते”?
Answer: In the प्रथमपाद: of the तृतीयाध्याय: of the अष्टाध्यायी there are two धात्वधिकारौ, the first one is 3-1-22 धातोरेकाचो हलादेः क्रियासमभिहारे यङ् and second (latter) one is 3-1-91 धातोः। “अत्र/सन्निहिते” (in this one which is close by to 3-1-93) specifies the second धात्वधिकार: – 3-1-91 धातोः । In the धात्वधिकारः starting with 3-1-91 धातोः, all the affixes other than the तिङ् affixes get the designation कृत्।

    5. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः the काशिका says “धातोः इत्येव, अग्निः। वायुः।” What does this mean?
    Answer: 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः specifies that the penultimate इक् letter (इ, उ, ऋ, ऌ) of a पदम् is elongated when the पदम् ends in a रेफ: or a वकार: of a धातु:। The काशिका says “धातोः इत्येव, अग्निः। वायुः।” It means that 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः will only apply when the पदम् ends in a रेफ: or a वकार: of a धातु:, and will not apply to words like अग्निः। वायुः।
    (अग्नि + सुँ 4-1-2 =अग्नि + स् 1-3-2, 1-3-9 = अग्निरुँ 8-2-66 = अग्निर् 1-3-2, 1-3-9) Here अग्निर् does have the पद-सञ्ज्ञा as per 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्। So the ending रेफ: is a पदान्तरेफ:, but still 8-2-76 does not apply because the रेफ: does not belong to a धातु:। It came from the सुँ-प्रत्यय:। So the final form is अग्नि: 8-3-15. If 8-2-76 were to be applied then we would have had the undesirable form अग्नीः
Similarly in the case of वायु:।

    6. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः is a निषेध: for which सूत्रम्?
    Answer: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः is a निषेध: for 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्।

    कथम् त्वम् कन्दुकम् एकेन एव हस्तेन गृहीतवती = कथं त्वं कन्दुकमेकेनैव हस्तेन गृहीतवती।

    8. The अमरकोश: gives thirty(!) synonyms for the word “युद्धम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “युद्ध” neuter, meaning “war”). One of them is संयुग: (प्रातिपदिकम् “संयुग” masculine) used in this verse. Please list the remaining twenty-nine. (Use Apte’s dictionary for help.)

    Answer: भूषण + भिस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…)
