पीनवक्षाः mNs

Today we will look at the form पीनवक्षाः from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

समः समविभक्ताङ्गः स्निग्धवर्णः प्रतापवान् |
पीनवक्षा विशालाक्षो लक्ष्मीवाञ्छुभलक्षणः || १-१-११||

Gita Press translation “He is of medium stature (neither very tall nor very short), has well-proportioned limbs, has an unctuous complexion, is mighty, has a rounded chest, large eyes, is full of splendor and has auspicious marks on his body. “

‘पीनवक्षस्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पीनवक्षस्’

Note: ‘वक्षस्’ is a नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्। But ‘पीनवक्षस्’ is a बहुव्रीहि-समास: here. This makes it an adjective. We will be declining it पुंलिङ्गे because it is referring to श्रीराम:।

(1) पीनवक्षस् + सुँ ।

(2) पीनवक्षस् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) पीनवक्षास् + स् । By 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः , since the सुँ-प्रत्यय: which is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the उपधा (the अकार: prior to the सकार:) in the word पीनवक्षस् is elongated.

Questions:

1. In the first verse of which chapter of the गीता do we have a प्रातिपदिकम् similar to the one used in this example? (All these same steps will be required there also.)

2. Where else (besides in पीनवक्षाः) has the सूत्रम् 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः been used in this verse?

3. Please list the two synonyms for the word “वक्ष:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “वक्षस्” neuter, meaning “chest”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
उरो वत्सं च वक्षश्च ।।२-६-७८।।
(इति त्रीणि “उरस:” नामानि)

4. What would have been the final form in this example if the सुँ-प्रत्यय: had the सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा?

5. What will be the तृतीया-बहुवचनम् and सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “पीनवक्षस्” पुंलिङ्गे?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“We have not studied compounds.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अधीतवत्” (“अधीतवती” feminine) to convey the meaning of “have studied.”

7. Answer question 6 – but this time make it passive – “Compounds (have) not been studied by us.” Use the passive adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अधीत” for “been studied.”

Advanced question:

1. Do पदच्छेद: of लक्ष्मीवाञ्छुभलक्षणः and mention the relevant rules required. You will need one सूत्रम् (8-3-31 शि तुक्) which has not been discussed in the class.

Easy questions:

1. Can you recall a सूत्रम् which contains a प्रत्याहार: that has only two letters?
Note: A प्रत्याहार: will never have only one letter for the obvious reason that such a प्रत्याहार: will serve no purpose. A single letter can be referred to directly without the need for a प्रत्याहार:।

2. The हकार: is the only letter that is repeated in the माहेश्वर-सूत्राणि। In the प्रत्याहार: “हल्” which हकार: is being referred to – is it the earlier one or the later one in the माहेश्वर-सूत्राणि? (See note above.)

  1. 1. In the first verse of which chapter of the गीता do we have a प्रातिपदिकम् similar to the one used in this example? (All these same steps will be required there also.)
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् “आसक्तमनस्” in chapter 7 verse 1 –
    मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युञ्जन्मदाश्रयः |
    असंशयं समग्रं मां यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच्छृणु || 7-1||

    आसक्तमनाः is a compound. ‘मनस्’ is a नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्। But ‘आसक्तमनस्’ is a बहुव्रीहि-समास: here. This makes it an adjective. Here it is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।

    2. Where else (besides in पीनवक्षाः) has the सूत्रम् 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः been used in this verse?
    Answer: In प्रतापवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रतापवत्”) and लक्ष्मीवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् “लक्ष्मीवत्”) both declined as पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् ।
    = लक्ष्मीवान्त् (6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात् सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्, Using 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्, “लक्ष्मीवान्त्” gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्) = लक्ष्मीवान् (8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः, only the ending तकारः takes लोपः by 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य)
    Similarly for प्रतापवान्।

    3. Please list the two synonyms for the word “वक्ष:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “वक्षस्” neuter, meaning “chest”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
    उरो वत्सं च वक्षश्च ।।२-६-७८।।
    (इति त्रीणि “उरस:” नामानि)

    Answer: 1) उरः (प्रातिपदिकम् “उरस्” neuter)
    2) वत्सम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “वत्स” neuter)

    4. What would have been the final form in this example if the सुँ-प्रत्यय: had the सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा?
    Answer: The final would be “हे पीनवक्षः”। We would skip step 3 (उपधा-दीर्घः by 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः) since the सुँ-प्रत्ययः will get सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः। This is because the अनुवृत्ति: of “असम्बुद्धौ” comes in to 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः from 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ।

    5. What will be the तृतीया-बहुवचनम् and सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “पीनवक्षस्” पुंलिङ्गे?
    Answer: The तृतीया-बहुवचनम् पुंलिङ्गे form is पीनवक्षोभिः
    पीनवक्षस् + भिस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….)
    = पीनवक्षर् + भिर् (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः )
    = पीनवक्ष उ + भिर् (उकार-आदेशः for the रेफः of रुँ by 6-1-114 9 हशि च )
    = पीनवक्षोभिर् (6-1-87 आद्गुणः ) = पीनवक्षोभिः (8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    The सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् पुंलिङ्गे form is पीनवक्षस्सु/ पीनवक्षःसु
    पीनवक्षस् + सुप् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….) = पीनवक्षस् + सु (1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः) = पीनवक्षर् + सु (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    = पीनवक्षःसु (8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)
    = पीनवक्षःसु / पीनवक्षस्सु (8-3-36 वा शरि – When the विसर्ग: is followed by a शर् letter it optionally gets replaced by a विसर्ग:। In the other case, the विसर्ग: gets the सकारादेश: by 8-3-34 विसर्जनीयस्य सः।)

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“We have not studied compounds.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अधीतवत्” (“अधीतवती” feminine) to convey the meaning of “have studied.”
    Answer: वयम् समासान् न अधीतवत्यः/अधीतवन्तः = वयं समासान्नाधीतवत्यः/समासान्नाधीतवन्तः।

    7. Answer question 6 – but this time make it passive – “Compounds (have) not been studied by us.” Use the passive adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अधीत” for “been studied.”
    Answer: अस्माभिः समासाः न अधीताः = अस्माभिः समासा नाधीताः।

    Advanced question:

    1. Do पदच्छेद: of लक्ष्मीवाञ्छुभलक्षणः and mention the relevant rules required. You will need one सूत्रम् (8-3-31 शि तुक्) which has not been discussed in the class.
    Answer: The पदच्छेद: of लक्ष्मीवाञ्छुभलक्षणः is लक्ष्मीवान् , शुभलक्षणः।
    लक्ष्मीवान् + शुभलक्षणः =
    लक्ष्मीवान् तुँक् + शुभलक्षणः (By 8-3-31 शि तुक्, पदान्त-नकारः takes the तुँक् augment (optionally) because शकारः follows. By 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the augment तुँक् is attached to the end of the term because ककार: is an इत् in the तुँक्-आगम:)
    लक्ष्मीवान् त् + शुभलक्षणः (1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    लक्ष्मीवान् च् + शुभलक्षणः (By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चु:, तकारः is replaced by चकारः)
    लक्ष्मीवाञ् च् + शुभलक्षणः (By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चु:, नकारः is replaced by ञकारः)
    लक्ष्मीवाञ् च् + छुभलक्षणः (By 8-4-63 शश्छोऽटि, छकारादेशः (optionally) for शकारः )
    लक्ष्मीवाञ् + छुभलक्षणः (By 8-4-65 झरो झरि सवर्णे, चकारः preceding the छकारः is (optionally) elided)
    लक्ष्मीवाञ्छुभलक्षणः।

    Easy questions:

    1. Can you recall a सूत्रम् which contains a प्रत्याहार: that has only two letters?
Note: A प्रत्याहार: will never have only one letter for the obvious reason that such a प्रत्याहार: will serve no purpose. A single letter can be referred to directly without the need for a प्रत्याहार:।
Answer: In the following सूत्राणि that we have studied we come across a प्रत्याहार: that has only two letters.
    6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति, 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात् सम्बुद्धे:, “एङ्” has only ए and ओ।
    1-1-1 वृद्धिरादैच् , “ऐच्” has only ऐ and औ।
    1-1-51 उरण् रँपरः, “रँ” has only र् and ल्।

    2. The हकार: is the only letter that is repeated in the माहेश्वर-सूत्राणि। In the प्रत्याहार: “हल्” which हकार: is being referred to – is it the earlier one or the later one in the माहेश्वर-सूत्राणि? (See note above.)
Answer: The हकारः occurs twice in the सूत्राणि, once in the fifth सूत्रम् and again in the last सूत्रम्। However, the हल्-प्रत्याहारः is always counted from the first ह, and hence refers to all consonants. This is obviously so, because it would serve no purpose to refer to the single letter ह् ।
