शुश्रुवान् mNs

Today we will look at the form शुश्रुवान् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

इति हृदयमनोविदारणं मुनिवचनं तदतीव शुश्रुवान् |
नरपतिरभवन्महान् महात्मा व्यथितमनाः प्रचचाल चासनात् || १-१९-२२||

Gita Press translation “The great king, magnanimous though he was, felt afflicted in mind (even) as he heard the aforesaid request of the sage, which was extremely agonizing to the heart and the mind, and fell down (unconscious) from his seat.”

The प्रातिपदिकम् “शुश्रुवस्” is formed from the धातु: “श्रु” using the क्वसुँ-प्रत्यय:। Thus it is an उगित्।

‘शुश्रुवस्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्। 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शुश्रुवस्’

(1) शुश्रुवस् + सुँ ।

(2) शुश्रुव नुँम् स् + सुँ । By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, a non-verbal base with an उक् (उ, ऋ, ऌ) as a marker takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix.

(3) शुश्रुवन्स् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(4) शुश्रुवान्स् + स् । By 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य, since the सुँ-प्रत्ययः (a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix) which is not सम्बुद्धिः follows, the letter preceding the नकारः of a base that ends in a सकारान्त-संयोग: is elongated.

(5) शुश्रुवान्स् । सकार-लोपः by 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्। Using 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्, शुश्रुवान्स् gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्

(6) शुश्रुवान् । By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः, the संयोगान्तपदम् “शुश्रुवान्स्” takes लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter (सकार:) of the पदम् will take लोपः।

Questions:

1. Where else is the सूत्रम् 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य used in this verse?

2. Why didn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-131 वसोः सम्प्रसारणम् apply in this example? Which condition was not satisfied?

3. Derive the form व्यथितमनाः (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “व्यथितमनस्” (this is a बहुव्रीहि-समास: – used here in the masculine.)

4. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा?

5. Can you spot a नकारान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse?

6. The सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य is an अपवाद: for 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य। Now 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य itself has an अपवाद:। Which one is that?

7. How would you ask this in Sanskrit?
“Where (is) the सूत्रम् “6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः” used in the last verse of the Fifteenth Chapter of the गीता ?” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रयुक्त” for “used”, the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “चरम” for “last” and the अव्ययम् “कुत्र” for “where.”

8. Please state the one synonym for the word “आसनम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आसन” neuter, meaning “seat”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
पीठमासनम् ।।२-६-१३८।।
(इति द्वे “आसनस्य” नामनी)

Easy questions:

1. Please list the rules required to do the सन्धिकार्यम् in अभवत् + महान् = अभवन् महान्।

2. Derive the form आसनात् (पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “आसन”। It is declined like ज्ञान/वन-शब्द:।
