पुमान् mNs

Today we will look at the form पुमान् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

न तेन जन्मप्रभृति दृष्टपूर्वं तपस्विना |
स्त्री वा पुमान् वा यच्चान्यत् सत्त्वं नगरराष्ट्रजम् || १-१०-९ ||

Gita Press translation “Since his (very) birth that hermit (boy) had never before seen any man or woman or (for that matter) any other living being born in a town or in the countryside.”

The प्रातिपदिकम् “पुम्स्” is formed using the उणादि-प्रत्यय: “डुम्सुँन्”। Thus it an उगित् (because the उकार: in the डुम्सुँन्-प्रत्यय: is an इत्)।

‘पुम्स्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुम्स्’

(1) पुम्स् + सुँ ।

(2) पुम् असुँङ् + सुँ । When the intention is to add a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix, पुम्स् gets the असुँङ् replacement by 7-1-89 पुंसोऽसुङ् । See question 2.

(3) पुमस् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(4) पुम नुँम् स् + स् । By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, the प्रातिपदिकम् “पुम्स्” which is an उगित् takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. By 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम्-आगम: is placed after the last अच् (the अकार: after the मकार:) in “पुमस्”।

(5) पुमन्स् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) पुमान्स् + स् । By 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य, since a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix which is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the letter preceding the नकारः in the word पुमन्स् is elongated.

(7) पुमान्स् । सकार-लोपः by 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्। Using 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम् पुमान्स् gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्

(8) पुमान् । By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः, the संयोगान्तपदम् “पुमान्स्” takes लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter (सकार:) of the पदम् will take लोपः।

Questions:

1. Where is the word “पुमान्” used in the गीता (Chapter 2)?

2. Why didn’t the असुँङ्-आदेश: replace the entire अङ्गम् “पुम्स्” as per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य?

3. Please list the four synonyms for the word “पुमान्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “पुम्स्” masculine, meaning “man”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
स्युः पुमांसः पञ्चजनाः पुरुषाः पूरुषा नरः ।।२-६-१।।
(इति पञ्च “मनुष्यजातौ पुरुषस्य” नामानि)

4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“All these men have come here to see the festival.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “आगत” for “have come”, the अव्ययम् “इह” for “here”, the अव्ययम् “द्रष्टुम्” for “to see” and the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “उत्सव” for “festival.”

5. Where is the सूत्रम् 7-1-25 अद्ड् डतरादिभ्यः पञ्चभ्यः used?

6. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse has the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा?

7. In this example, if the सुँ-प्रत्यय: had the सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा then all the same rules would have applied except for one. Which सूत्रम् would not have applied and what would have been the final form?

8. Which are the इत् letters in the डुम्सुँन्-प्रत्यय:?

Easy questions:

1. Please do पदच्छेद: of यच्चान्यत् and mention the relevant rules.

2. Consider the form “तेन” which is पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम् of the सर्वनाम-शब्द: (pronoun) “तद्”। Steps are as follows:
तद् + टा by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…
त अ + टा by 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य
त + टा by 6-1-97 अतो गुणे
त + इन by ?
तेन by ?
Which rules were used in the last two steps? (These same rules are used in deriving the form “रामेण”)।
