निराशीः mNs

Today we will look at the form निराशीः from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 9-18-50

तमेव हृदि विन्यस्य वासुदेवं गुहाशयम् ।
नारायणमणीयांसं निराशीरयजत् प्रभुम् ।। ९-१८-५० ।।

Gita Press translation “Installing in his heart the selfsame Lord Vāsudeva, the Indweller of all hearts, who has His abode in water and is subtler than the subtle, Yayāti, who had no desire (left) in him, worshiped Him there.”

The प्रातिपदिकम् “निराशिस्” is a समास: (compound) formed by using the अव्ययम् निर्/निस् and the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “आशिस्”। It is an adjective. Here it is declined in the masculine.
Note: The  ending सकार: of “निराशिस्” comes from the धातु: “शास्” (for details see वार्तिकम् under 6-4-34 शास इदङ्हलोः।)

Being a समासः, by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च, “निराशिस्” gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा and the सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः are ordained after it by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…

By 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः, the penultimate इक् letter (इ, उ, ऋ, ऌ) of a पदम् is elongated when the पदम् ends in a रेफ: or a वकार: of a धातु:।

(6) निराशीः । विसर्ग-आदेशः by 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “निराशिस्” used in the गीता (Chapters 3, 4 and 6)?

2. Consider the प्रातिपदिकम् “अघायुस्” used in the गीता 3-16. This is also a compound similar to “निराशिस्”। In पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्, all the same steps, as in this example, are used – except 8-2-76 र्वोरुपधाया दीर्घ इकः doesn’t apply. What does that tell you about the ending सकार: in “अघायुस्”?

3. Derive the सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of “निराशिस्”।

4. The प्रातिपदिकम् “अणीयस्” ends in the तद्धित-प्रत्यय: “ईयसुँन्” – hence it is “उगित्”। Which सूत्रम् was used to do the उपधा-दीर्घ: in the form “अणीयांसम्” used in this verse?

5. Which सर्वनाम-शब्द: (pronoun) has been used in this verse? By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the सर्वनाम-सञ्ज्ञा?

6. The अमरकोश: gives thirty-eight synonyms (all masculine) for the word “विष्णु:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “विष्णु”, meaning “Lord Vishnu”). Two of them are used in this verse – नारायण: (प्रातिपदिकम् “नारायण”) and वासुदेव: (प्रातिपदिकम् “वासुदेव”)। Please list the other thirty-six.

7. How would you ask this in Sanskrit?
“Who worshiped Krishna with a one-pointed mind?” Use a verb from the verse and the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “एकाग्र” for “one-pointed.”

Advanced question:

1. The form “हृदि” used in this verse is the सप्तमी-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “हृदय”। (Also used in the गीता 8-12, 13-18, 15-15.) This is an alternate form – the other familiar form being हृदये। Can you find a सूत्रम् (not yet discussed in class) in 6-1 of the अष्टाध्यायी which is necessary to derive this form? (It comes earlier than 6-1-72 संहितायाम्)।

Easy questions:

1. Consider the form “प्रभुम्”। It is द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रभु”। Which सूत्रम् do we use to get प्रभु + अम् = प्रभुम्? (The same सूत्रम् is used in the form “रामम्”)।

2. Consider the सन्धि-कार्यम् between अयजत् + प्रभुम्। Which two rules can be applied here? (There will be no net change in the form.)
