श्रीः fNs

Today we will look at the form श्रीः fNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.25.29.

Gita Press translation – Are you Hrī (the goddess presiding over the virtue of bashfulness) or Pārvatī (the divine consort of Lord Śiva) or Vāk (the goddess presiding over speech) or Ramā (Goddess Lakṣmī) living in seclusion like a hermitess in this forest in search of your lord, who has (I am sure) realized all his ambitions by merely craving for your feet? (If you are none else than Goddess Ramā) where has the lotus bud (Your invariable companion and distinguishing mark) dropped from the tips of your fingers? (28) (No,) you are none of the (aforesaid), O damsel with well-formed thighs, since you touch the ground (with your feet.) (Therefore,) be pleased to grace this city with myself, an eminent hero of extraordinary prowess, even as Śrī (the goddess of beauty and prosperity) adorns the transcendental realm (of Vaikuṇṭha) with (Her Consort) Lord Viṣṇu (the Soul of sacrifices) (29).

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ is derived from the verbal root √श्रि (श्रिञ् सेवायाम् १. The ending ञकार: of ‘श्रिञ्’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च – To denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill, the affix ‘क्विँप्’ may be used following any one of the the verbal roots listed below. Simultaneously there is an elongation of the (vowel contained in) the verbal root and there is an absence of संप्रसारणम् (if applicable.)
३८) when preceded by ‘आयत’
११११) when preceded by ‘कट’

By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य – The वकारः which is अपृक्तः (a single letter प्रत्ययः), takes लोपः। As per 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्यय:, here the वकारः has अपृक्त-सञ्ज्ञा।

दीर्घादेश: is done by the same वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च।

Now ‘श्री’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

Note: The ईकार: at the end of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् श्री belongs to the verbal root √श्रि। It is not the feminine affix ‘ङी‘। Hence 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् does not apply here. There are nine such ईकारान्त-स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकानि that do not allow सकार-लोपः by 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्। They are given in the following verse –
These nine स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकानि end in a ईकार: but for these there is no the elision of सुँ-प्रत्ययः because they don’t end in the स्त्री-प्रत्यय: ‘ङी’। Hence 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात् सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् does not apply to these nine.

Questions:

1. Where has the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ been used in Chapter Ten of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – क्विब्वचीत्यादिना उणादिसूत्रेण केषांचित्सिद्धे तच्छीलादौ तृना बाधा मा भूदिति वार्तिके ग्रहणम् । Please explain.

3. Where else (besides in श्रीः) has the वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ been used in Chapter Ten of the गीता?
Answer: The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ has been used in the following verse:
    मृत्युः सर्वहरश्चाहमुद्भवश्च भविष्यताम्‌ |
    कीर्तिः श्रीर्वाक्च नारीणां स्मृतिर्मेधा धृतिः क्षमा || 10-34||

    The विवक्षा in श्री: is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।

    2. Commenting on the वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – क्विब्वचीत्यादिना उणादिसूत्रेण केषांचित्सिद्धे तच्छीलादौ तृना बाधा मा भूदिति वार्तिके ग्रहणम् । Please explain.
Answer: Some of the terms listed in the वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च are already listed in the उणादिसूत्रम् 2-58 क्विब्वचिप्रच्छिश्रिस्रुद्रुप्रुज्वां दीर्घोऽसंप्रसारणं च which also prescribes the affix क्विँप्। That being the case, what is the point of repeating these terms in the वार्तिकम्?
The reason is तच्छीलादौ तृना बाधा मा भूदिति वार्तिके ग्रहणम् meaning that these terms have been listed again in the वार्तिकम् in order to prevent the affix तृन् (prescribed by 3-2-135 तृन्) from over-ruling the affix क्विँप् in the sense of तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु। (The उणादिसूत्रम् 2-58 prescribes the affix क्विँप् not limited to the sense of तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु। This affix क्विँप् would be over-ruled by the affix तृन् which is specifically prescribed in the sense of तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु। To prevent this from happening the वार्तिकम् comes and re-prescribes the affix क्विँप् in the specific sense of तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु।)

    3. Where else (besides in श्रीः) has the वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च been used in the verses?
Answer: The वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च has also been used in the form वाक्।

दीर्घादेश: is done by the same वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च। The सम्‍प्रसारणम् (the letter ‘उ’ in place of the letter ‘व्’) which would have been done by 6-1-15 is stopped by this same वार्तिकम्। Now ‘वाच्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
Now ‘वाच्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-30 to apply in the next step.
By 8-2-30 चोः कुः।

    4. Where has the substitution ‘शतृँ’ been used in the verses?
Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ has been used in the form विचिन्वती (स्त्रीलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The form विचिन्वती is derived from the verbal root √चि (चिञ् चयने ५. ५) along with the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः।
Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘श्नु’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the ending letter ‘इ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘चि’ which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः। Similarly, since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘शतृँ’ is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the ending letter ‘उ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘चिनु’ which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-4-87 हुश्नुवोः सार्वधातुके।
Note: The यण् substitution prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for the ‘उवँङ्’ substitution that would have otherwise been done by 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ।

    ‘विचिन्वत्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now we derive the feminine
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘विचिन्वत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the मकार-लोप: in संयता (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति prescribes the मकार-लोप: in संयता (स्त्रीलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संयता’ is derived from the verbal root √यम् (यमँ उपरमे १. ११३९) along with the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’ as follows:
    सम् यम् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति – There is an elision of the final nasal consonant of the verbal root √वन् (वनँ शब्दे १. ९१५) and of the verbal roots* which have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः as well as of the verbal roots belonging to the तनादि-गणः – when followed by a झलादि-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
The following six roots end in a nasal consonant and have a अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः।
By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।

    ‘संयत’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संयता’ is derived as follows:
    संयत + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Fortune favors the brave.” Use the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.७१) with the उपसर्ग: ‘अनु’ for ‘to favor.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः been used in the verses?
    Answer: 7-2-113 हलि लोपः has been used in the form आसाम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, स्त्रीलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्)।
Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for derivation of

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the दीर्घादेश: in the form भवामि used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-101 अतो दीर्घो यञि prescribes the दीर्घादेश: in the form भवामि।
