सन् mNs

Today we will look at the form सन् mNs from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 4.8.36.

Translation – Nay, dismayed through this fear alone I did not (dare to) approach you even on seeing you, O scion of Raghu; for in (the face of) danger all get nervous (35). These monkeys with Hanumān as their leader for their part have in fact been my only companions. Hence I (am able to) preserve my life today, though I am reduced to straits (36). These loving monkeys actually protect me on all sides. They accompany me wherever I have to go and ever remain by my side when I have to stay (37). This in brief is all my story, O Rāma! Of what use is it to give you details? Vālī, that hostile elder brother of mine, is well-known for his valor (38).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सत्’ is derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०).

The अकारः at the end of ‘असँ’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। This अकार:has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √अस् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √अस् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative. But the fact that पाणिनि: has used लँट् in this सूत्रम् 3-2-124 is spite of the अनुवृत्ति: of लँट् being available from the prior सूत्रम् 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट् gives the clue (ज्ञापकम्) that sometimes the substitution ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ may be used even when the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in the nominative. This justifies the use of ‘शतृँ’ in deriving the word सन् even though it is in agreement with अहम् which ends in the nominative case.
Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। And as explained above, √अस् is परस्मैपदी। Hence ‘शतृँ’ is chosen and not ‘शानच्’।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. Note: As per 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः, the शप्-प्रत्ययः takes the लुक् elision when following a verbal root belonging to अदादि-गणः।

By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः, the अकारः of “श्न” and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by सार्वाधातुक-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “अत्” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

‘सत्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। Note: The affix “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य

By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, a non-verbal base with an ‘उक्’ (‘उ’, ‘ऋ’, ‘ऌ’) as a marker takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. Note: The ऋकार: as a इत् in the affix ‘शतृँ’ allows 7-1-70 to apply here.

Note: Now ‘सन्त्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः to apply in the next step.

By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter (तकार:) of the पदम् ‘सन्त्’ takes लोपः। Note: After this, 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्

Questions:

1. In which verse of the गीता has the word ‘सन्’ been used twice?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः (used in step 7), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – तपरकरणमास्तामासन्नित्यत्र ह्याडागमे कृते तस्य लोपो मा भूदित्येतदर्थम्। Please explain.

3. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-4 अदभ्यस्तात्‌ been used in the verses?

4. Can you spot a कृत्य-प्रत्यय: in the verses?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Even though being old, a lion does not eat grass.”

Advanced question:

1. What would be an alternative form for the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्निग्ध’ used in the verses? You will need to consider the following सूत्रम् (which we have not yet studied) – 8-2-33 वा द्रुहमुहष्णुहष्णिहाम् । The ending हकार: of the verbal roots √द्रुह् (द्रुहँ जिघांसायाम् ४. ९७) is optionally replaced by a घकार: when either (i) followed by a झल् letter or (ii) at the end of a पदम्।

Easy questions:

1. In the verses can you spot three words in which the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘एतद्’ has been used?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्तिसर्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः been used in the verses?

  1. 1. In which verse of the गीता has the word ‘सन्’ been used twice?
Answer: The word ‘सन्’ has been used twice in the following verse:
    अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि सन्‌
    प्रकृतिं स्वामधिष्ठाय सम्भवाम्यात्ममायया ।। 4-6 ।।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः (used in step 7), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – तपरकरणमास्तामासन्नित्यत्र ह्याडागमे कृते तस्य लोपो मा भूदित्येतदर्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: तपरकरणम् refers to the letter ‘त्’ used in the term अल्लोपः in the सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः। (Note: The सन्धि-कार्यम् between अत् लोपः = अल्लोपः is done by 8-4-60 तोर्लि।) Why does पाणिनि: use तपरकरणम् here? That is why does he say अल्लोपः (and not simply अलोप:)? We know that as per the सूत्रम् 1-1-70 तपरस्तत्कालस्य the term अत् refers to only the short vowel ‘अ’। On the other hand the term ‘अ’ refers to both the short vowel ‘अ’ as well as the long vowel ‘आ’। So if पाणिनि: had said अलोप: (instead of अल्लोपः) then 6-4-111 would prescribe the elision of the long vowel ‘आ’ also (in addition to the elision of the short vowel ‘अ’।) This would have been undesirable. Why? Consider the form आस्ताम् derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि, धातु-पाठः #२.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् ।
‘तस्’ gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् ।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of ‘ताम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप् ।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः ।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः।
Note: Both 6-4-72 and 6-4-111 belong to the अधिकार: of ‘असिद्धवत्’ which runs from 6-4-22 असिद्धवदत्राभात्‌ to the end of the Sixth Chapter. Hence the अकार-लोप: done by 6-4-111 is not seen by 6-4-72 and thus it applies (because it sees the अङ्गम् as being अजादि – beginning with a vowel.)
If पाणिनि: had said अलोप: (instead of अल्लोपः) then 6-4-111 would apply at this point and prescribe the undesired elision of letter ‘आ’ at the beginning of आस्ताम्। In order to prevent such undesirable elisions of the letter ‘आ’, पाणिनि: specifies अल्लोपः in 6-4-111 thus allowing 6-4-111 to elide only the short vowel ‘अ’ and not the long vowel ‘आ’।

Similarly in the example आसन् (लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्) the beginning long vowel ‘आ’ is not elided by 6-4-111 because of the specification अल्लोपः।

    This is what the तत्त्वबोधिनी means by तपरकरणमास्तामासन्नित्यत्र ह्याडागमे कृते तस्य लोपो मा भूदित्येतदर्थम्।

Further Note: Both 6-4-72 and 6-4-111 belong to the अधिकार: of ‘असिद्धवत्’ which runs from 6-4-22 असिद्धवदत्राभात्‌ to the end of the Sixth Chapter. Hence the augment ‘आट्’ done by 6-4-72 should be असिद्धवत् (as if it has not taken place) in the eyes of 6-4-111. That being the case there is no question of 6-4-111 removing the letter ‘आ’ regardless of तपरकरणम्। Okay. Then what is the purpose of तपरकरणम् here? The तत्त्वबोधिनी later suggests that the तपरकरणम् in 6-4-111 could be then taken as a ज्ञापकम् – a hint from पाणिनि: that the सूत्रम् 6-4-22 असिद्धवदत्राभात्‌ is अनित्यम् – it doesn’t apply all the time. If 6-4-22 असिद्धवदत्राभात्‌ were to apply consistently then there was no need for तपरकरणम् in 6-4-111. Hence आभाच्छास्त्रस्यानित्यताज्ञापनाय तपरकरणम्।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-4 अदभ्यस्तात्‌ been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-4 अदभ्यस्तात्‌ says – The झकारः of a प्रत्ययः that follows a reduplicated (ref. 6-1-5 उभे अभ्यस्तम्) root is substituted by ‘अत्’। The सूत्रम् has been used in the verses in the derivation of the form ‘बिभ्यति’ derived from the verbal root √भी (ञिभी भये #३. २).

Please see answer to question 2 in the following comment for the derivation of बिभ्यति –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/08/29/बिभेति-3as-लँट्/#comment-1317

    4. Can you spot a कृत्य-प्रत्यय: in the verses?
Answer: A कृत्य-प्रत्यय: has been used in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गन्तव्य’ in the form गन्तव्ये।

    The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “गन्तव्य” is derived from √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) as follows:
By 3-1-96 तव्यत्तव्यानीयरः – The affixes “तव्यत्”, “तव्य” and “अनीयर्” may be used after a verbal root. Note: Since the सूत्रम् 3-1-96 तव्यत्तव्यानीयरः occurs in the अधिकारः of ‘3-1-95 कृत्याः’ the affix ‘अनीयर्’ gets the designation ‘कृत्य’। And as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः the affix ‘अनीयर्’ is used here कर्मणि (to denote the object).
    Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for the प्रत्यय: “तव्य”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

Answer: The alternate form for the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्निग्ध’ is ‘स्नीढ’।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्निग्ध’ is derived as follows:
    स्निह् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा।
    Note: The optional ‘इट्’-आगमः that would have been prescribed by 7-2-45 रधादिभ्यश्च is stopped by 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा। 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 8-2-33 वा द्रुहमुहष्णुहष्णिहाम्।
By 8-2-40 झषस्तथोर्धोऽधः।

The optional form ‘स्नीढ’ is derived as follows:
    स्निह् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा।
    Note: The optional ‘इट्’-आगमः that would have been prescribed by 7-2-45 रधादिभ्यश्च is stopped by 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा। 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 8-2-31 हो ढः। Note: This is the case where we don’t apply the optional
By 8-2-40 झषस्तथोर्धोऽधः।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।
Note: The situation of a ढकार: followed by a ढकार: only arises after applying 8-4-41. So even though 8-3-13 is an earlier rule (compared to 8-4-41) in the अष्टाध्यायी, it has to be allowed (in spite of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्) to see the operation done by 8-4-41, for otherwise 8-3-13 would become useless.
Note: The situation of a ढकारलोप:/रेफलोप: only arises after applying 8-3-13/8-3-14. So even though 6-3-111 is an earlier rule (compared to 8-3-13/8-3-14) in the अष्टाध्यायी, it has to be allowed (in spite of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्) to see the operation done by 8-3-13/8-3-14, for otherwise 6-3-111 would become useless.
    ‘स्नीढ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    Easy questions:

    1. In the verses can you spot three words in which the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘एतद्’ has been used?
    Answer: The three words in which the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘एतद्’ is used are एतया (स्त्रीलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्), एते (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्), एषः (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

The derivation of एतया is as follows:
    एतद् + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। “एतद्” has the सर्वनाम-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-27 सर्वादीनि सर्वनामानि।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
By 7-3-105 आङि चापः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

Please see answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for the derivation of एते –
