Gita Press transaltion – (Turning towards Rukmiṇī,) please do not take offense with us, O good lady, thinking of the disfiguration of your brother. None else is responsible for one’s joy and sorrow; for a man reaps the fruit of his own doings (in the shape of pleasurable and painful experiences) (38). A relative does not deserve death at the hands of his relative even if he has committed an offense deserving such treatment and should be let off. Why should he who stands killed by his own offense be killed again? (39)”

“त्याज्य” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √त्यज् (भ्वादि-गणः, त्यजँ हानौ धातु-पाठः #१.

By 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ – The affix ण्यत् may be used following any verbal root which either ends in a ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः or ॠकारः) or in a consonant.

By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः – A penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

Note:7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः is stopped by the वार्तिकम् (under 7-3-66 यजयाचरुचप्रवचर्चश्च) ण्यति प्रतिषेधे त्यजेरुपसङ्ख्यानम् – The verbal root √त्यज् (त्यजँ हानौ १. ११४१) should be included in the list of verbal roots whose चकारः/जकारः does not take a कवर्गादेशः (a letter of the क-वर्गः as a substitute) when followed by the affix “ण्यत्”।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् “त्याज्य” been used in Chapter Eighteen of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् “त्याज्य” has been used in Chapter Eighteen of the गीता in the following verses:

    2. Commenting on the वार्तिकम् (under 7-3-66 यजयाचरुचप्रवचर्चश्च) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says त्यजपूज्योश्चेति काशिका । Please explain.
Answer: According to the काशिका the verbal root √पूज् (पूजँ पूजायाम् १०. १४४) should also be included along with the verbal root √त्यज् (त्यजँ हानौ १. ११४१) in this वार्तिकम्। But the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says that the inclusion of √पूज् (पूजँ पूजायाम् १०. १४४) is questionable since there is no reference to √पूज् in the महाभाष्यम्। Note: The presently available edition of the काशिका has the वार्तिकम् worded as ण्यति प्रतिषेधे त्यजेरुपसंख्यानम् which agrees with the महाभाष्यम्। It is possible that the काशिका has been edited since the time of  the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी।

Please explain.
Answer:  ‘ऋ’ इति ऋधातोर्न ग्रहणं किन्तु ऋवर्णस्य – means that the term ‘ऋ’ used in the सूत्रम् 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ does not refer to a specific verbal root ‘ऋ’ but instead it refers to  (all verbal roots which end in) the ऋवर्णः। How can we deduce this? According to the तत्त्वबोधिनी, there are three clues for this in the अष्टाध्यायी –
    i) हला साहचर्यात् – पाणिनिः has used ‘ऋ’ alongside with the प्रत्याहारः ‘हल्’ in the सूत्रम् 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌। ‘हल्’ refers to a set of letters and not to any specific verbal root. Hence it is unlikely that here ‘ऋ’ refers to a specific verbal root.
ii) परं कार्यमिति निर्देशात् – पाणिनिः himself has used the word कार्यम् in the सूत्रम् 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम्। If ‘ऋ’ in the सूत्रम् 3-1-124 were to refer to a specific verbal root ‘ऋ’ then the word कार्यम् cannot be formed because कार्यम् is derived from the verbal root ‘कृ’ (and not ‘ऋ’)।
The सूत्रम् 6-1-214 prescribes a स्वरः (intonation) for a term formed by adding the affix ‘ण्यत्’ to certain verbal roots which include the verbal root ‘वृ’। This obviously implies that the verbal root ‘वृ’ may take the affix ‘ण्यत्’। Hence the ‘ऋ’ in 3-1-124 must not be referring to a specific verbal root ‘ऋ’।

    4. Can you spot a verbal root belonging to the कण्ड्वादि-गणः in the verses?
Answer: The verbal root √असु (असु उपतापे, कण्ड्वादि-गणः) used in the form असूयेथाः belongs to the कण्ड्वादि-गणः। Note: According to some grammarians, this verbal root is stated as ‘असूञ्’ (and not ‘असु’)। This justifies the use of आत्मनेपदम् (by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले) in the present example.

First we derive the धातुः “असूय” as follows:
By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् – The affix यक् is always used after the verbal roots in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः (group of terms headed by “कण्डूञ्”) with no change in their meaning.
    Note: यक् is a कित्।

    Now “असूय” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-102 लिङस्सीयुट् – The affixes of लिँङ् get सीयुट् as the augment. 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “सीयुट्”-आगमः at the beginning of “थास्”-प्रत्ययः।
Note: In the सीयुट्-आगमः, the उकारः before the टकारः is उच्चारणार्थ:।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The study of grammar is not to be abandoned.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“You ought not to abandon (your) aged parents.” Paraphrase to passive. Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “पितृ” (in the dual) for “parent.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “वृद्ध” for “aged.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. Can you spot a शप् elision in the verses?
Answer: A शप् elision can be seen in the form अस्ति derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः – The affix ‘शप्’ takes the ‘लुक्’ elision when following a verbal root belonging to the अदादि-गणः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः has been used in the form पुमान् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पुम्स्”, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-89 पुंसोऽसुङ्, 1-1-53 ङिच्च।
Note: Due to the presence of “असुँङ्”, the अङ्गम् “पुमस्” is उगित् – has an उक् (“उ”, “ऋ”, “ऌ”) as a marker.
By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः – A non-verbal base with an उक् (“उ”, “ऋ”, “ऌ”) as a marker and the verbal base “अञ्चुँ” whose नकारः has taken elision takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the “नुँम्”-आगम: is placed after the last अच् (the अकार: after the मकार:) in “पुमस्”।
By 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य।
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter (सकार:) of the पदम् takes लोपः।
    After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।
