Today we will look at the form सप्तानाम् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

सप्तानां च समुद्राणां तेषां तीर्थेषु लक्ष्मण |
उपस्पृष्टं च विधिवत् पितरश्चापि तर्पिताः || ३-७५-४ ।।

GitaPress translation “A bath has been taken with due ceremony in the sacred water of (all) the seven oceans (girding the earth) drawn by them (in a miniature form), O Lakṣmaṇa, and the manes too have been propitiated (with offerings of water). ”

‘सप्तन्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्। The विवक्षा here is षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्। 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सप्तन्’ ।

(1) सप्तन् + आम् । सप्तन् has षट्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-24 ष्णान्ता षट्।

(2) सप्तन् + नुँट् आम् । By 7-1-55 षट्चतुर्भ्यश्च, आम् affix gets नुँट् as an augment, since सप्तन् has षट्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(3) सप्तन् + नाम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(4) सप्तान् + नाम् । By 6-4-7 नोपधायाः the उपधा gets दीर्घादेश: since the अङ्गम् is ending in a नकारः and is followed by नाम्। ‘सप्तान्’ now gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनमस्थाने, since it is now followed by नाम्, which is a हलादि-सुँप्-प्रत्यय: that does not have the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा।

(5) सप्ता + नाम् । The ending letter न् of सप्तान् (which has पद-सञ्ज्ञा and प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा) is dropped by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।
