Gita Press translation – The glory of Śunaḥśepa (who was not eventually sacrificed but attained liberation during his very lifetime) will be recounted later (in connection with the story of Viśwāmitra’s son). And highly gratified to perceive (on another occasion) the firmness of the king (Hariścandra) as well as of his wife (Śaibyā) – firmness which derived its strength from his veracity – the sage Viśwāmitra vouchsafed to him (as a boon) unobstructed knowledge (of the Self). (Mentally) merging his mind (which is said to be a modification of the food that one takes) in earth (the source of all food), he identified the earth with water, water with fire and the latter with the air; and (again) merging the air in ether, the latter in Tāmasika aspect of the Ego and the said Tāmasika Ego in the Mahat-tattva (the principle of cosmic intelligence), and laying aside its objective character, he contemplated its knowledge aspect as his very self and through such contemplation he finally and thoroughly burnt his ignorance (that veiled the nature of the Self). (24-26)

  1. 1. In Chapter Two of the गीता can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् (used as part of the compound) which is formed using the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-54 सलिकल्यनिमहिभडिभण्डिशण्डिपिण्डितुण्डिकुकिभूभ्य इलच् (used in step 1)?
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कलिल’ in the compound मोहकलिलम् is formed using the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-54 सलिकल्यनिमहिभडिभण्डिशण्डिपिण्डितुण्डिकुकिभूभ्य इलच्।
    यदा ते मोहकलिलं बुद्धिर्व्यतितरिष्यति |
    तदा गन्तासि निर्वेदं श्रोतव्यस्य श्रुतस्य च || 2-52||

    ‘कलिल’ is derived from the verbal root √कल् (कलँ शब्दसङ्ख्यानयोः १. ५७० ).
    (1) कल् + इलच् । By the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-54 सलिकल्यनिमहिभडिभण्डिशण्डिपिण्डितुण्डिकुकिभूभ्य इलच्। – The affix ‘इलच्’ may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below –
    (i) √सल् (षलँ गतौ १. ६२८)
    (ii) √कल् (कलँ शब्दसङ्ख्यानयोः १. ५७०)
    (iii) √अन् (अनँ प्राणने २. ६५)
    (iv) √मह् (महँ पूजायाम् १. ८३१)

    (ix) √तुण्ड् (तुडिँ तोडने १. ३०९)
    (x) √कुक् (कुकँ आदाने १. ९६)
    (xi) √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १)

Note: By the सूत्रम् 3-4-75 ताभ्यामन्यत्रोणादयः – The affixes उण् etc may be used to denote a sense other than the dative or the ablative. Here the affix ‘इलच्’ is used कर्तरि (to denote the agent of the action) or कर्मणि (to denote the object of the action). कलते कल्यते वा = कलिलम्।

    = कल् + इल । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कलिल ।
    ‘कलिल’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    2. Where has the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-1 कृवापाजिमिस्वदिसाध्यशूभ्य उण् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-1 कृवापाजिमिस्वदिसाध्यशूभ्य उण् has been used in the form वायुम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वायु’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)
Please refer to the following post for the derivation of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वायु’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/02/11/वायुना-mis/

    3. In how many words in the verses has the substitution ‘शतृँ’ been used?
    Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ has been in the form धारयन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धारयत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and विनिर्दहन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विनिर्दहत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धारयत्’ is derived from the causative form of the verbal root (√धृ (धृञ् धारणे १. १०४७).
    धृ + णिच् । By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = धारि + अ + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = धारे + अ + अत् । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = धारय + अत् । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
    = धारयत् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    ‘धारयत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    विनिर्दहत् is derived from the verbal root √दह् (दहँ भस्मीकरणे धातु-पाठः #१. ११४६) preceded by the उपसर्गौ ‘वि’ and ‘निर्/निस्’।

    वि निर्/निस् दह् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = वि निर्/निस् दह् + अ + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    ‘विनिर्दहत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The derivation of धारयन् from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धारयत्’ and विनिर्दहन् from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विनिर्दहत्’ is similar to the derivation of विदन् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘विदत्’ shown in answer to question 2 in the following comment –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/31/विद्वान्-mns/#comment-12135

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वाच्या’ (used as part of the compound अन्नशब्दवाच्यायाम् in the commentary)?
Answer: The कृत् affix ‘ण्यत्’ by 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ is used in the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वाच्या’।

Please see the following post for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वाच्य’ –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/09/17/वाच्यः-mns/

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वाच्या’ is derived as follows:
    वाच्य + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = वाच्य + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = वाच्या । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Watch the leaves being shaken by the wind.” Use (a causative passive present participle form) of the verbal root √कम्प् (कपिँ चलने १. ४३५) for ‘to shake.’
    Answer: अनिलेन कम्प्यमानानि पर्णानि पश्य।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Without water there is no life.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जीवन’ for ‘life.’ Use the उणादि-सूत्रम् 1-54 सलिकल्यनिमहिभडिभण्डिशण्डिपिण्डितुण्डिकुकिभूभ्य इलच् for forming a प्रातिपदिकम् for ‘water.’
    सलिलम्/सलिलेन/सलिलात् विना जीवनम् न अस्ति = सलिलं/सलिलेन/सलिलाद् विना जीवनं नास्ति।

    Easy questions:

    1. In the verses can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् which is used only in the plural?
Answer: The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अप्’ used in अद्भिः (तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) is used only in the plural.
    अप् + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    The अङ्गम् has पद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने । 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of भिस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = अत् + भिस् । By 7-4-48 अपो भि।
    = अद् + भिस् । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
    = अद्भिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् been used in the verses?

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम् ।
    चक्ष् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = चक्ष् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चक्ष् + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
    = चक्ष् + ते । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे।
    = चक्ष् + यक् + ते । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् – The affix यक् follows a verbal root when a सार्वधातुकम् affix follows denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि)।
    = चक्ष् + य + ते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चक्ष्यते ।

    ‘प्र’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    प्र + चक्ष्यते = प्रचक्ष्यते ।
