भोज्येषु nLp

Today we will look at the form भोज्येषु nLp from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 2.77.15

ननु भोज्येषु पानेषु वस्त्रेष्वाभरणेषु च । प्रवारयति सर्वान् नस्तन्नः कोऽद्य करिष्यति ॥ २-७७-१५ ॥
अवदारणकाले तु पृथिवी नावदीर्यते । विहीना या त्वया राज्ञा धर्मज्ञेन महात्मना ॥ २-७७-१६ ॥
पितरि स्वर्गमापन्ने रामे चारण्यमाश्रिते । किं मे जीवितसामर्थ्यं प्रवेक्ष्यामि हुताशनम् ॥ २-७७-१७ ॥

Gita Press translation – Indeed you made us all (the four brothers) have our best choice out of (a large variety of) eatables, drinks, articles of wearing apparel and ornaments (placed before us.) (Since you have disappeared from our midst) who will discharge this function now? (15) (How strange that) this earth, even though it has been deprived of you, its high-souled ruler, who knew what is right, is not riven even at a time when it should have been riven! (16) My father having reached heaven and  Śrī Rāma having retired to the forest, what energy has been left in me to survive? I shall (accordingly) enter the fire (17). 

“भोज्य” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √भुज् (रुधादि-गणः, भुजँ पालनाभ्यवहारयोः, धातु-पाठः # ७. १७).

(1) भुज् + ण्यत् । By 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ – The affix ण्यत् may be used following any verbal root which either ends in a ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः or ॠकारः) or in a consonant.

(2) भुज् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: “य” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।

(3) भोज्य । By 7-3-86 पुगन्‍तलघूपधस्‍य च – When a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its इक्-letter takes गुण-आदेशः in the following two cases:
i) The अङ्गम् ends in a “पुक्”-आगमः। or
ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।

“भोज्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The विवक्षा is नपुंसकलिङ्गे, सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्

(4) भोज्य + सुप् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(5) भोज्य + सु । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(6) भोज्येसु । By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् – The ending “अ” of a अङ्गम् changes to “ए” when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter.

    Answer: The affix “ण्यत्” has been used in वाक्यम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and कार्यम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) in the following verses:
    सञ्जय उवाच
    तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम्‌ |
    विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदनः || 2-1||

    श्रीभगवानुवाच
    अनाश्रितः कर्मफलं कार्यं कर्म करोति यः |
    स संन्यासी च योगी च न निरग्निर्न चाक्रियः || 6-1||

    The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “वाक्य” is derived from √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८) as follows:
    वच् + ण्यत् । By 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ – The affix ण्यत् may be used following any verbal root which either ends in a ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः or ॠकारः) or in a consonant.
    = वच् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: “य” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = वक् + य । By 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः। Note: The निषेध-सूत्रम् 7-3-67 वचोऽशब्दसंज्ञायाम् does not apply here because of the exclusion अशब्दसंज्ञायाम्।
    = वाक्य । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    “वाक्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् “कार्य” is derived from √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) as follows:
    कृ + ण्यत् । By 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ – The affix ण्यत् may be used following any verbal root which either ends in a ऋ-वर्णः (ऋकारः or ॠकारः) or in a consonant.
    = कृ + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: “य” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = कर् + य । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = कार्य । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    “कार्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः apply in the form “भोज्य”?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः does not apply in the form “भोज्य” because of the निषेध-सूत्रम् 7-3-69 भोज्यं भक्ष्ये – The form “भोज्य” is used in the sense of “edible.” In any other sense the form is “भोग्य”।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-77 हलि च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-77 हलि च has been used in the form अवदीर्यते derived from √दॄ (दॄ विदारणे ९. २६).

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    दॄ + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = दॄ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दॄ + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
    = दॄ + ते । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे।
    = दॄ + यक् + ते । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्। Note: Since the affix यक् is a कित्, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेशः which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = दॄ + य + ते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दिर् + य + ते । By 7-1-100 ॠत इद्धातोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = दीर्यते । By 8-2-77 हलि च – The penultimate (उपधा) इक् letter of a verbal root ending in a वकारः or रेफः is elongated, when followed by a हल् (consonant.)

    “अव” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अव + दीर्यते = अवदीर्यते ।

    4. Which verbal root has been used in the form प्रवेक्ष्यामि?
    Answer: The verbal root √विश् (तुदादि-गणः, विशँ प्रवेशने, धातु-पाठः # ६. १६०) has been used in the form प्रवेक्ष्यामि।

    The विवक्षा is लृँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    विश् + लृँट् । 3-3-13 लृट् शेषे च।
    = विश् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = विश् + मिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = विश् + मि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = विश् + स्य + मि । By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “स्य”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = वेश् + स्य + मि । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = वेश् स्यामि । By 7-3-101 अतो दीर्घो यञि।
    = वेष् स्यामि । By 8-2-36 व्रश्च-भ्रस्ज-सृज-मृज-यज-राज-भ्राजच्छशां षः।
    = वेक् स्यामि । By 8-2-41 षढोः कः सि।
    = वेक्ष्यामि । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    “प्र” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    प्र + वेक्ष्यामि = प्रवेक्ष्यामि ।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?

    Answer: इमानि/एतानि फलानि न भोज्यानि ।

    = पितरि।

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः has been used in the form राज्ञा (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “राजन्”, तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।

    राजन् + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
    = राजन् + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। “राजन्” gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्।
    = राज्न् + आ । By 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः – There is an elision of the अकारः of “अन्” when
    i) the “अन्” belongs to a अङ्गम् and
    ii) the “अन्” is (immediately) followed by a स्वादि-प्रत्यय: which is not सर्वनामस्थानम् and which either begins with a यकारः or a vowel (अच्)।

    Note: स्वादि-प्रत्यया: are the प्रत्यया: prescribed from 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……… up to the end of Chapter Five of the अष्टाध्यायी।
    = राज्ञा । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः।
