Gita Press translation – Ah, most blessed are we that have no anxiety (whatsoever) and who are not being devoured by wolves and other carnivorous animals, though weak and forsaken here (in this world full of woes) by our parents (who were recognized as responsible for our protection)! For, He alone is the protector (everywhere), who protects us in the (mother’s) womb (where there is nobody to look after us excepting the Lord) (38). The wise, O ladies, call the animate and inanimate creation a (mere) plaything in the hands of that (very) Lord who creates it by (sheer) will, who alone, all-powerful as He is, protects it and who, though imperishable (Himself) destroys it. He (alone) is competent to maintain and dissolve it (39).

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छा’ is derived from the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).

By 3-3-101 इच्छा – ‘इच्छा’ is given as a ready-made form (implying the application of the affix ‘श’ and the irregular absence of the affix ‘यक्’) – derived from the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८) – to denote in the feminine gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.

By 7-3-77 इषुगमियमां छः – When followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्, the ending letter of the verbal roots √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ११३९) gets छकारः as replacement.

By 6-1-73 छे च – A short vowel (ह्रस्वः) gets the augment तुँक् when a छकारः follows in संहितायाम् (continuous speech.) As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment तुँक् joins after the इकारः।

‘इच्छ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ‘आप्’ ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix ‘आङ्’ (‘टा’) or ‘ओस्’। Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending आकार: of the अङ्गम् ‘इच्छा’ gets replaced.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छा’ been used in Chapter Thirteen of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छा’ has been used in the following verse of Chapter Thirteen of the गीता –

    The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।

    2. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-3-101 इच्छा (used in step 1) in the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – इषेर्भावे शो यगभावश्च निपात्यते। Commenting on this the Please explain.
Answer: The सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी clarifies that the ready made form इच्छा given by the सूत्रम् 3-3-101 implies the following two operations – i) the application of the affix ‘श’ following the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८) in the sense of भावः (the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state) and ii) the irregular absence of the affix ‘यक्’ (which should have been done by the सूत्रम् 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।)
The अनुवृत्ति: of 3-3-18 भावे as well as 3-3-19 अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम् runs through the सूत्रम् 3-3-101 इच्छा। But as clarified by the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी the form इच्छा is used in the language only भावे and not अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम्। Hence for example if the affix is to denote the instrument of the action the form इच्छा is not used. We instead use the default affix क्तिन् (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-94 स्त्रियां क्तिन्) go get the form (इष्यतेऽनया =) इष्टि:।

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निग्रह’ (used as part of the compound निग्रहसङ्ग्रहे in the verses)?
Answer: The कृत् affix ‘अप्’ is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निग्रह’ from the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.७१) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’।

The affix अप् is used here in the sense of भावः (the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.)

By 3-3-58 ग्रहवृदृनिश्चिगमश्च। Note: The affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घञ्’ (in the case of √ग्रह्, √वृ, √दृ and √गम्) prescribed by 3-3-18 and 3-3-19 and to the affix ‘अच्’ (in the case of √चि preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘निस्’) prescribed by 3-3-56.
    ‘निग्रह’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. In the verses can you spot two words in which the affix ‘तृच्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ has been used?
    Answer: The affix ‘तृच्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ is used in the forms ईशितुः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ईशितृ’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) and रक्षिता (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रक्षितृ’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ईशितृ’ is derived from the verbal root √ईश् (ईशँ ऐश्वर्ये २. १०) as follows:
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes ‘ण्वुल्’ and ‘तृच्’ may be used after a verbal root. Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, these affixes are used in the sense of the agent of the action.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…………..।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘ङस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः along with 8-2-24 रात् सस्य।
By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    Similarly, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रक्षितृ’ is derived from the verbal root √रक्ष् (रक्षँ पालने १. ७४६) as follows:
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes ‘ण्वुल्’ and ‘तृच्’ may be used after a verbal root. Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, these affixes are used in the sense of the agent of the action.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, 1-1-53 ङिच्च।
By 6-4-11 अप्तृन्तृच्स्वसृनप्तृनेष्टृत्वष्टृक्षत्तृहोतृपोतृप्रशास्तॄणाम्।
Now ‘रक्षितान्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ईशितृ’ as well as ‘रक्षितृ’ may also be derived using the affix तृन् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-135 तृन्।
Note: The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पितृ’ (used in the verses in the form पितृभ्याम्) also ends in the affix तृच्/तृन् but this is not prescribed in the अष्टाध्यायी itself. ‘पितृ’ is given as a ready made form by the उणादि-सूत्रम् 2-95 नप्तृनेष्टृत्वष्टृहॊतृपोतृभ्रातृजामातृमातृपितृदुहितृ ॥

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रभु’?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-180 विप्रसम्भ्यो ड्वसंज्ञायाम् is used to derived the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रभु’ from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’।

By 3-2-180 विप्रसम्भ्यो ड्वसंज्ञायाम् – The affix ‘डु’ may be used following the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) when preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’ or ‘प्र’ or ‘सम्’, as long as the word so derived is not a proper name.
Note: The affix ‘डु’ is used कर्तरि (to denote the agent) as per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌।
By 6-4-143 टेः। Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having the letter ‘ड्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘डु’।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sage Viśvāmitra came to Ayodhyā with a desire of seeing king Daśaratha.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दर्शन’ for ‘(the act of) seeing.’ Use षष्ठी विभक्ति: with ‘seeing’ and ‘king Daśaratha.’
