इच्छया fIs

Today we will look at the form इच्छया fIs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 7.2.39.

Gita Press translation – Ah, most blessed are we that have no anxiety (whatsoever) and who are not being devoured by wolves and other carnivorous animals, though weak and forsaken here (in this world full of woes) by our parents (who were recognized as responsible for our protection)! For, He alone is the protector (everywhere), who protects us in the (mother’s) womb (where there is nobody to look after us excepting the Lord) (38). The wise, O ladies, call the animate and inanimate creation a (mere) plaything in the hands of that (very) Lord who creates it by (sheer) will, who alone, all-powerful as He is, protects it and who, though imperishable (Himself) destroys it. He (alone) is competent to maintain and dissolve it (39).

एषणमिच्छा ।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छा’ is derived from the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).

(1) इष् + श । By 3-3-101 इच्छा – ‘इच्छा’ is given as a ready-made form (implying the application of the affix ‘श’ and the irregular absence of the affix ‘यक्’) – derived from the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८) – to denote in the feminine gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.

(2) इष् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) इछ् + अ । By 7-3-77 इषुगमियमां छः – When followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्, the ending letter of the verbal roots √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८), √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) and √यम् (यमँ उपरमे १. ११३९) gets छकारः as replacement.

(4) इ तुँक् छ् + अ । By 6-1-73 छे च – A short vowel (ह्रस्वः) gets the augment तुँक् when a छकारः follows in संहितायाम् (continuous speech.) As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment तुँक् joins after the इकारः।

(5) इ त् छ् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) इच्छ । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चु:

‘इच्छ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

(7) इच्छ + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(8) इच्छ + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) इच्छा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

(10) इच्छा + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(11) इच्छा + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(12) इच्छे + आ । By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ‘आप्’ ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix ‘आङ्’ (‘टा’) or ‘ओस्’। Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending आकार: of the अङ्गम् ‘इच्छा’ gets replaced.

(13) इच्छया । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

Questions:

1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छा’ been used in Chapter Thirteen of the गीता?

2. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-3-101 इच्छा (used in step 1) in the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – इषेर्भावे शो यगभावश्च निपात्यते। Commenting on this the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – न त्वकर्तरि कारकेऽपीत्यर्थः। अत एव करणेऽर्थे – ‘इष्यतेऽनया’ इष्टि:। Please explain.

3. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निग्रह’ (used as part of the compound निग्रहसङ्ग्रहे in the verses)?

4. In the verses can you spot two words in which the affix ‘तृच्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ has been used?

5. Which सूत्रम् is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रभु’?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sage Viśvāmitra came to Ayodhyā with a desire of seeing king Daśaratha.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दर्शन’ for ‘(the act of) seeing.’ Use षष्ठी विभक्ति: with ‘seeing’ and ‘king Daśaratha.’

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-101 अतो दीर्घो यञि been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment नुँम् in the form अवलुम्पते?
