करणं क्रिया।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रिया’ is derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

(1) कृ + श । By 3-3-100 कृञः श च – This सूत्रम् is split in to two parts – ‘कृञ:’ and ‘श च’। The meaning of the first part is – The affix क्यप्‌ may be used following the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
The meaning of the second part is – The affix ‘श’ may also (in addition to the affix क्तिन्) be used following the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) in the same sense.
Note: The purpose of splitting the सूत्रम् in to two parts is to allow the affix क्तिन् to apply in addition to the affix ‘क्यप्’ and ‘श’।
Note: The affix ‘श’ has the designation सार्वधातुकम् by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-67 to apply below.

(2) कृ + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) कृ + यक् + अ । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् – The यक्-प्रत्ययः follows a धातुः when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि)।

(4) कृ + य + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

(5) क् रिङ् + य + अ । By 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्‌क्षु, the ending ऋकारः (ऋत्) of an अङ्गम् is replaced by रिङ्, when followed by any one of the following:
1. श-प्रत्यय:
2. यक्-प्रत्यय:
3. यकारादि: (beginning with a यकार:) आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः of लिँङ्।
Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ऋकार: of the अङ्गम् “कृ” gets replaced.

(6) क्रि + य + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(7) क्रिय । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

‘क्रिय’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

(8) क्रिय + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(9) क्रिय + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(10) क्रिया । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्

(11) क्रिया + शस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(12) क्रिया + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of ‘शस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(13) क्रियास् । 6-1-102 प्रथमयो: पूर्वसवर्ण: – When an अक् letter is followed by a vowel (अच्) of the first (nominative) or second (accusative) case then for the two of them (अक् + अच्) there is a single substitute which is the elongated form of the first member (the अक् letter.)

(14) क्रियाः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रिया’ been used in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?

2. What would be the final form in this example if the affix ‘क्यप्’ were to be used (instead of ‘श’)?

3. Why is ईक्षताम् a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical form)? What would be the grammatically correct form?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This action has not been ordained by the scriptures.” Use (a passive participle form of) the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’ for ‘to ordain.’

Easy questions:

1. What would be an alternate form for तरिष्यन्ति?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-119 अच्च घेः been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रिया’ been used in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रिया’ is used in the following verse of Chapter Eleven of the गीता –
    न वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैर्न दानैर्न च क्रियाभिर्न तपोभिरुग्रैः |
    एवंरूपः शक्य अहं नृलोके द्रष्टुं त्वदन्येन कुरुप्रवीर || 11-48||

    The विवक्षा in क्रियाभि: is तृतीया-बहुवचनम्।

    2. What would be the final form in this example if the affix ‘क्यप्’ were to be used (instead of ‘श’)?
Answer: The final form would be कृत्याः (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रिया’, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृत्या’ is derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) as follows:
कृ + क्यप् । By By 3-3-100 कृञः श च – This सूत्रम् is split in to two parts – ‘कृञ:’ and ‘श च’। The meaning of the first part is – The affix क्यप्‌ may be used following the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
    = कृ + य । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
