Gita Press translation – Maitreya replied: Brahmā brought out the four Vedas called the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda and the Atharvaveda severally from his mouths facing the east, south, west and north; and in the same order did he create Śastra (the duty of the priest called Hotā) Ijyā (the duty of the Adhwaryu), Stutistoma (the duty of the Udgātā) and Prāyaścitta (the duty of the Brahmā) (37). In the same way he released Āyurveda (the science of medicine), Dhanurveda (the science of archery), Gandharvaveda (the science of music) and Sthāpatyaveda (the science of architecture) severally from his easterly and other mouths (38). The all-seeing Brahmā then discharged from all his four mouths the class of literature known by the name of Itihāsa and Purāṇa, which is recognized as the fifth Veda (39).

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इज्या’ is derived from the verbal root √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १.

By 3-3-98 व्रजयजोर्भावे क्यप्‌ – The affix क्यप्‌ with a उदात्त: accent is used following the verbal root √व्रज् (व्रजँ गतौ १. ११५७) – to denote in the feminine gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
Note: The affix क्यप्‌ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix क्तिन् prescribed by 3-3-94 स्त्रियां क्तिन्।

By 6-1-15 वचिस्वपियजादीनां किति – The verbal roots √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ६३) and also the nine verbal roots beginning with √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७) take सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45) when followed by an affix which is a कित्।
Note: The nine verbal roots √यज् etc are the last nine in the भ्वादि-गण:। They are as follows: √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १.

By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च – When a सम्प्रसारणम् is followed by a अच् (vowel), there is a single replacement (in place of both the सम्प्रसारणम् and the following अच्) of the prior letter (the सम्प्रसारणम्)।

‘इज्य’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इज्या’ been used in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-98 व्रजयजोर्भावे क्यप्‌ (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – पित्करणं तूत्तरत्र तुगर्थम्। Please explain.

3. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?

4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ष्‍ट्रन् in स्तोत्रम्?

5. What prevents 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः from applying in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रम’ (used in क्रमात् in the verses)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“A sacrifice purifies the mind of the one who performs the sacrifice.” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यजमान’ for ‘one who performs the sacrifice.’

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix ‘श’ in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in सर्वेभ्यः and वक्त्रेभ्यः?

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इज्या’ been used in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इज्या’ has been used in the following verse of Chapter Eleven of the गीता –

    The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-3-105 आङि चापः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-98 व्रजयजोर्भावे क्यप्‌ (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – पित्करणं तूत्तरत्र तुगर्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: By applying the सूत्रम् 3-3-98 व्रजयजोर्भावे क्यप्‌ we get the same forms व्रज्या and इज्या regardless of whether the affix क्यप्‌ is a पित् (has the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) or not. Then what is the point of making the affix क्यप्‌ a पित्? The answer is उत्तरत्र तुगर्थम्। The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘क्यप्‌’ goes down to the next two rules 3-3-99 संज्ञायां समजनिषदनिपतमनविदषुञ्शीङ्भृञिणः and 3-3-100 कृञः श च। And there it is important for the affix ‘क्यप्‌’ to be a पित् because that enables the augment तुँक् (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक्) to come in.

    For example – भरणविशेषो भृत्या (जीविका) derived from the verbal root √भृ (भृञ् भरणे १.
By 3-3-99 संज्ञायां समजनिषदनिपतमनविदषुञ्शीङ्भृञिणः – In order to derive a proper name in the feminine gender the affix क्यप्‌ with a उदात्त: accent is used following any one of the verbal roots listed below to denote either the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or any कारक: except the agent of the action –
२६२) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’
१६३) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’
९७९) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’
By 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक् – When followed by a कृत् affix which is a पित् (has the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), a short vowel takes the augment ‘तुँक्’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the augment ‘तुँक्’ is placed after the vowel ‘ऋ’ of ‘भृ’।
Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    Similarly – कृत्या derived by applying the सूत्रम् 3-3-100 कृञः श च ।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु has been used in the form व्यधात्।

Please see answer to question 3 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ष्‍ट्रन् in स्तोत्रम्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-182 दाम्नीशसयुयुजस्तुतुदसिसिचमिहपतदशनहः करणे prescribes the affix ष्‍ट्रन् in स्तोत्रम्।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्तोत्र’ is derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ २.
By 3-2-182 दाम्नीशसयुयुजस्तुतुदसिसिचमिहपतदशनहः करणे – To denote the instrument of the action, the affix ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’ may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below –
Note: As per the परिभाषा ‘निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:’ (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the substitution ‘ट्’ (in place of the letter ‘त्’) which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the letter ‘ष्’ in ‘ष्‍ट्रन्’, now reverts to the letter ‘त्’ since the cause for the substitution ‘ट्’ no longer exists.
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः। Note: 7-2-9 तितुत्रतथसिसुसरकसेषु च as well as 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त्र’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    ‘स्तोत्र’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. What prevents 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः from applying in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रम’ (used in क्रमात् in the verses)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-34 नोदात्तोपदेशस्य मान्तस्यानाचमेः prevents 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः from applying in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रम’।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्रम’ is derived from the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १.
By 3-3-18 भावे।
Note: The वृद्धि: substitute (in place of the penultimate letter ‘अ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘क्रम्’) which would have been done by the सूत्रम् 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः is stopped by the सूत्रम् 7-3-34 नोदात्तोपदेशस्य मान्तस्यानाचमेः – There is no वृद्धिः substitute in place of the penultimate vowel of a verbal root (with the exception of the verbal root √चम् (चमुँ अदने १. ५४०) with the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’) which is उदात्तोपदेशः and ends in the letter ‘म्’ when followed by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् (has the letter ‘ञ्’ as a इत्) or णित् (has the letter ‘ण्’ as a इत्)।
    ‘क्रम’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    Answer: The affix ‘श’ is used in the form असृजत् derived from √सृज् (तुदादि-गणः, सृजँ विसर्गे, धातु-पाठः # ६.

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of असृजत् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/09/28/योधाः-mnp/#comment-4775

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in सर्वेभ्यः and वक्त्रेभ्यः?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in सर्वेभ्यः (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सर्व’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे पञ्चमी-बहुवचनम्) and वक्त्रेभ्यः (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वक्त्र’, पञ्चमी-बहुवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘भ्यस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् – the ending letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् changes to ‘ए’ when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter.

    Similarly
