परिभवः mNs

Today we will look at the form परिभवः mNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 11.1.4.

। ४ ।। । ५ ।।

Gita Press translation – “Having always been protected by Me, and grown uncontrollable through prosperity, this race of Yadu can by no means be vanquished by others (even by gods). (Therefore,) just as a bamboo grove is consumed by fire (produced by the friction of the bamboos themselves), I shall destroy the Yadavas by creating internal strife among them, and (then) in peace shall return to My realm (Vaikuṇṭha)” (4). O king (Parīkṣit)! having thus resolved, the Lord of truthful resolution brought about the annihilation of His own race through the curse of the Brāhmaṇas as a pretext (or obvious cause) (5).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिभव/परिभाव’ (in the meaning of ‘disrespect/insult’) is derived from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) along with the उपसर्गः ‘परि’।

First let us derive the form ‘परिभव’ using the affix अप् –

By 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ – The affix अप् may be used following a verbal root ending in a ॠकार: or a उवर्ण: (उकार:/ऊकार:) to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
Note: The affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by 3-3-18 भावे and 3-3-19 अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम्

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः – An अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

Now let us derive the optional form ‘परिभाव’ using the affix घञ् –

By 3-3-55 परौ भुवोऽवज्ञाने – The affix घञ् may optionally be used following the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) – provided the verbal root is in conjunction with the उपसर्ग: ‘परि’ and the sense of the derived word is ‘disrespect/insult.’

By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति – A vowel ending अङ्गम् gets a वृद्धिः substitute, when followed by a प्रत्ययः that has ञकारः or a णकारः as an indicatory letter.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

‘परिभव/परिभाव’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.

The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

Questions:

1. Where has the affix घञ् been used with the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) in Chapter Nine of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-55 परौ भुवोऽवज्ञाने (used in step 5) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – अवज्ञाने किम्? Please explain.

3. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-131 वर्तमानसामीप्ये वर्तमानवद्वा been used in the verses?

4. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘व्यवसित’ derived?

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix अप् to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निश्चय’ (used as part of the compound कृतनिश्चयः in the commentary)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“If you don’t like being insulted then don’t insult others.” Paraphrase to “If your insult is not pleasing unto you, then don’t do insult of others.” Use the अव्ययम् ‘यदि’ for ‘if’ and ‘तर्हि’ for ‘then.’ Use लुँङ् to express the prohibition ‘don’t.’

Easy questions:

  1. 1. Where has the affix घञ् been used with the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) in Chapter Nine of the गीता?
Answer: The affix घञ् has been used with the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) in the form भावम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भाव’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) in Chapter Nine of the गीता –

By 3-3-24 श्रिणीभुवोऽनुपसर्गे – The affix घञ् may be used following the verbal root √श्रि (श्रिञ् सेवायाम् १. १) – provided any one of these verbal roots is not in conjunction with a उपसर्ग: – to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-55 परौ भुवोऽवज्ञाने (used in step 5) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – अवज्ञाने किम्? Please explain.
Answer: Why does पाणिनिः specify अवज्ञानम् (disrespect) in the सूत्रम् 3-3-55 परौ भुवोऽवज्ञाने? Consider the example – सर्वतो भवनम् meaning ‘existing all around’. Here the meaning of अवज्ञानम् (disrespect) is not intended. Therefore we cannot use the Instead we use the affix ‘अप्’ prescribed by 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ to get the form परिभवः। In this case there is no optional form.

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-131 वर्तमानसामीप्ये वर्तमानवद्वा been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-131 वर्तमानसामीप्ये वर्तमानवद्वा has been used in the form उपैमि। Here उपैमि actually stands for उपैष्यामि।

    The form उपैमि is derived from the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘उप’।
By 3-3-131 वर्तमानसामीप्ये वर्तमानवद्वा – The affixes which have been prescribed (by the rules starting from 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट् up to 3-3-1 उणादयो बहुलम्) in the present tense may also be optionally used to denote an action in the immediate past or immediate future.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    ‘उप’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-89 एत्येधत्यूठ्सु। Note: 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि would not work here because it is over-ruled by 6-1-94 एङि पररूपम्।

    4. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘व्यवसित’ derived?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘व्यवसित’ is derived from the verbal root √सो (षो अन्तकर्मणि ४. ४२) preceded by the उपसर्गौ ‘वि’ and ‘अव’। Note: As per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, the letter ‘स्’ is substituted in place of the initial letter ‘ष्’ of the verbal root ‘षो’। And since we know that the verbal root is not going to be followed by a शित् (the letter ‘श्’ as a इत्), we replace the ending letter ‘ओ’ of the verbal root by the letter ‘आ’ as per 6-1-45 आदेच उपदेशेऽशिति।

By । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: Since the verbal root √सो is used intransitively (अकर्मक:) here the affix ‘क्त’ denotes the agent (कर्तरि) as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
By 7-4-40 द्यतिस्यतिमास्थामित्ति किति – The letter ‘इ’ is substituted in place of the final letter of the verbal roots √दो (दो अवखण्डने ४. १०७७) when followed by an affix which is कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) and begins with the letter ‘त्’।
    Note: The affix ‘क्त’ is a कित्। Therefore 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    ‘सित’ is compounded with the उपसर्गौ ‘वि’ and ‘अव’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    ‘व्यवसित’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix अप् to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निश्चय’ (used as part of the compound कृतनिश्चयः in the commentary)?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-58 ग्रहवृदृनिश्चिगमश्च prescribes the affix अप् in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निश्चय’। Please see the following post for the derivation of the

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ has been used in the form धाम (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) derived from the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धामन्’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् take the लुक् elision. ‘धामन्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    2. Can you spot a इकार-लोप: (elision of the letter ‘इ’) in the verses?
Answer: The elision of the letter ‘इ’ (by the सूत्रम् 3-4-100 इतश्‍च ) has taken place in the form भवेत्।

Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form भवेत् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/08/01/जङ्गमम्-nns/#comment-4120
