यस्मिन् mLs

Namaste,

Today we will look at the formation of यस्मिन् used in the श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता 6.22
यं लब्ध्वा चापरं लाभं मन्यते नाधिकं ततः।
यस्मिन् स्थितो न दुःखेन गुरुणापि विचाल्यते॥

यद् gets सर्वनामसंज्ञा as it is listed in 1-1-27 सर्वादीनि सर्वनामानि. It also gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्‍ययः प्रातिपदिकम्

The विवक्षा here is सप्तमी विभक्तिः एकवचनम् so the derivation begins with

(1) यद् + ङि

(2) य अ + ङि । 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः mandates अ as आदेशः to यद् when विभक्तिः follows

(3) य + ङि । 6-1-97 अतो गुणे gives पररूपम् as एकादेशः

(4) यस्मिन् । 7-1-15 ङसिङ्योः स्मात्स्मिनौ replaces ङि with स्मिन्

Questions:

1. In step (2) the word विभक्तिः is used. Which rule defines it?

2. Where else does the word यस्मिन् come in the गीता?

3. In this श्लोक: there is another word which comes from the प्रातिपदिकम् “यद्” – which one is that? What is the विभक्ति:/वचनम्/लिङ्गम्?

4. How many places is 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः used in this श्लोक:?

5. The वृत्ति: for the rule 7-1-15 ङसिङ्योः स्मात्स्मिनौ reads “अतः सर्वनाम्न एतयोरेतौ स्तः।” From which rule(s) did we get the terms “अत:” and “सर्वनाम्न:” as अनुवृत्ति:?

6. In the word गुरुणा which rule was used to bring in the substitution “ना” in place of the प्रत्यय: टा? Which rule was used to change the न् to ण्?

7. Why didn’t the ending न् of स्मिन् become an इत् letter by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्?

8. “मित्रवद् आगम:, शत्रुवद् आदेश:” – Please explain this statement.

  1. Namaste,

    1. 1-4-104 विभक्तिश्च (Satishji’s notes: The 21 सुँप् affixes (nominal case endings listed in 4-1-2) and the 18 तिङ् affixes (verbal endings listed in 3-4-78) get the designation of विभक्ति:.)

    3. It is यम् (यं)
    The विवक्षा is द्वितीया विभक्ति: , एकवचनम् , पुंलिङ्गे
    यद् + अम् (7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः )
    => य अ + अम् (6-1-97 अतो गुणे )
    => य + अम् (6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः)
    => यम्

    Now the सन्धि-कार्यम् between यम् and लब्ध्वा
    यम् + लब्ध्वा (8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः)
    => यं लब्ध्वा

    4. चापरम् => च + अपरम्
    नाधिकम् => न + अधिकम्
    गुरुणापि => गुरुणा + अपि

    5. The अनुवृत्ति: of अत: comes from 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् and सर्वनाम्नः comes from 7-1-14 सर्वनाम्नः स्मै.

    6. It is 7-3-120 आङो नाऽस्त्रियाम् – Following a अङ्गम् having घि-सञ्ज्ञा, the affix “आङ्” is replaced by “ना”, but not in the feminine gender. ‘आङ्’ is an ancient name for the (instrumental singular) affix टा.

    By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि the न् is changed to ण्
    ( Satishji’s notes: The letter न् is replaced by ण् when either र् or ष् precedes, even if intervened by a letter of the अट्-प्रत्याहार: or by a letter of the क-वर्ग: or प-वर्गः or the term आङ् or नुँम् (अनुस्वारः) either singly or in any combination. )

    7. By 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः ( Satishji’s notes: Any letter of the त-class (त्, थ्, द्, ध्, न्) or the letter स् or म् which is in a विभक्ति: does not get the designation इत् .)

    8. An आदेशः is a substitute and either replaces a part or whole of the स्थानी ( where the operation takes place). So it is said to be शत्रुवत् (like an enemy) . Whereas आगमः is an augment which always attaches itself to the स्थानी without any substitution. That’s why it is said to be मित्रवत् (like a friend) .

    Thank you Satishji.
