कतर nNs

Today we will look at the form कतरत् (nNs)from भगवद्गीता Bg2-6

(1) कतर + सुँ – The सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः are ordained by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌ । and we get the सुँ-प्रत्ययः for प्रथमा एकवचनं रूपम्.

, सुँ gets the अद्ड्-आदेशः, since कतर is a डतरान्त-शब्दः.

(3) कतर + अद् – The डकारः of अद्ड् gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् । and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः ।

(4) कतर् + अद् – The अकारः of कतर, which is its टि-भागः, is dropped by 6-4-143 टेः ।, since अद्ड् is a डित्-प्रत्ययः.

(5) कतरद् – Here कतरद् has the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते ।, the दकारः of कतरद् gets the जशादेशः, which in this case is दकारः itself.

, the दकारः gets the चरादेशः optionally yielding two possible final forms.

Questions:

1. What सञ्ज्ञा should the अङ्गम् have for 6-4-143 टेः to be applicable and for this example, how does the अङ्गम् get this सञ्ज्ञा?

2. Where else does the सूत्रम् “टेः” come in the अष्टाध्यायी?

3. Why did पाणिनि: not simply make the आदेश: as अद् (instead of अद्ड्) in 7-1-25? Please explain.

4. Why did पाणिनि: not simply make the आदेश: as त् or द् (instead of अद्ड्) in 7-1-25? Please explain.

5. Do पदच्छेद: of कतरन्नो. Please mention the relevant rules.

From which सूत्रम् does the अनुवृत्ति: of “झलां” and “चर्” come into 8-4-56?

7. Where does पाणिनि: define the सञ्ज्ञा “टि”?

8. Please give the टि-भाग: of the following terms – a) राम b) तपस् c) जगत् d) ऊर्ज्

9. We have seen in the रामायणम् class that the प्रत्यय: त्वा is used when we have the same doer doing two actions. The verbal root in the earlier action takes the प्रत्यय: त्वा. (The सूत्रम् is 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले ।) In this verse we have the word हत्वा which comes from the धातु: हन्. Who is the doer of this action? Which word in the verse gives us the second (later) action?

10. Since डकार: is part of the ट-वर्ग: could we have used 1-3-7 चुटू instead of 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् to get the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा for the अन्त्य-डकार: of अद्ड् in step 3?

11. The five terms “डतर” etc. are a subset of which गण:?
