निशाचरी fNs

Today we will look at the form निशाचरी fNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.6.13.

Gita Press translation – As a result of her very deep and violent roar the earth with its mountains and heaven with its planets shook, the subterranean worlds as well as the (four) quarters echoed and people toppled down on the ground under the apprehension of a thunderbolt (12). Thus tormented at her breasts and reverting (in her helpless state) to her own (demoniac) form, she (sprang and) fell dead in (the outskirts of) Vraja, opening her mouth and flinging about her hair and stretching her legs and arms too (even) like the demon Vṛtra knocked down by the thunderbolt (of Indra), O protector of men! (13)

निशायां चरतीति निशाचरी (राक्षसी)।

“चर” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थ: १. ६४०).

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् “निशाचर” is derived as follows:

(1) निशा + ङि + चर् + ट । By 3-2-16 चरेष्टः – The affix “ट” may be used after the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थ: १. ६४०) when in composition with a पदम् which denotes the locus (of the action.)

Note: The term अधिकरणे (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-16 from the prior सूत्रम् 3-2-15 अधिकरणे शेतेः) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence “निशा ङि” (which is the locus (अधिकरणम्) of चरति) gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌ – The designation उपपदम् is applied to a term which denotes a thing – like a pot etc. – which is present (as the thing to be expressed) in a word ending in the locative case in the सूत्रम्।

(2) निशा + ङि + चर् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-7 चुटू and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

We form a compound between “निशा + ङि” (which is the उपपदम्) and “चर” by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् – A सुबन्तम् (term ending in a सुँप् affix) having the designation “उपपद” (in this case “निशा + ङि”) invariably compounds with a syntactically related term (in this case “चर”) as long as the compound does not end in a तिङ् affix.

In the compound, “निशा + ङि” is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation “उपसर्जन” should be placed in the prior position. Note: Here “निशा + ङि” is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case “उपपदम्”) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation “उपसर्जन”।
“निशा + ङि + चर” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

(3) निशाचर । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is स्त्रीलिङ्गे, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “निशाचरी” is derived as follows:

(4) निशाचर + ङीप् । By 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः – To denote the feminine gender, the affix ङीप् is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् which satisfies the following conditions:
(i) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in a अकार:
(ii) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in a non-secondary affix which is either टित् (has टकार: as a इत्) or is one of the following – ‘ढ’, ‘अण्’, ‘अञ्’, ‘द्वयसच्’, ‘दघ्नच्’, ‘मात्रच्’, ‘तयप्’, ‘ठक्’, ‘ठञ्’, ‘कञ्’ or ‘क्वरप्’।

(5) निशाचर + ई । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। ‘निशाचर’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-18 यचि भम्

(6) निशाचर् + ई । By 6-4-148 यस्येति च – When a ईकारः or a तद्धित-प्रत्यय: follows, the (ending) इ-वर्ण: (इकारः or ईकारः) or the (ending) अवर्ण: (अकारः or आकारः) of the अङ्गम् with the भ-सञ्ज्ञा takes लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending अकार: of the अङ्गम् takes लोपः।

= निशाचरी ।

The विवक्षा is स्त्रीलिङ्गे, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

(7) निशाचरी + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(8) निशाचरी + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) निशाचरी । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix “सुँ”, “ति” or “सि” is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix “ङी” or “आप्”।

Questions:

1. In Chapter Eleven of the गीता can you spot a word wherein 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः (used in step 4) has applied on the basis of there being a टकार: as a इत्? Hint: In Chapter Eleven there are very few words which contain the feminine affix ङीप्। One of them must be the answer to this question (because 4-1-15 prescribes the feminine affix ङीप्।)

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-2-16 चरेष्टः (used in step 1) the काशिका says – प्रत्ययान्तरकरणं ङीबर्थम्। Please explain.

3. In the absence of 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः, which सूत्रम् would have applied in step 4?

4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेश: in the form पेतु:?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“An ogress by the name Trijaṭā consoled Sītā.” Use the verbal root √सान्त्व् (षान्त्वँ सामप्रयोगे १०. ५१) for to “console.” Use the अव्ययम् “नाम” for “by the name.”

Easy Questions:

1. Where has  the सूत्रम् 8-3-7 नश्छव्यप्रशान् been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the औकारादेश: (substitute “औ”) in the form द्यौ:?

Answer: The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “नदी” used in the form नदीनाम् in the following verse is derived using the सूत्रम् 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः।

    यथा नदीनां बहवोऽम्बुवेगाः समुद्रमेवाभिमुखा द्रवन्ति |
    तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा विशन्ति वक्त्राण्यभिविज्वलन्ति || 11-28||

    नदतीति नदी।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् “नद” is derived from the verbal root √नद् (णदँ अव्यक्ते शब्दे १. ५६).
    नद् + अच् । By 3-1-134 नन्दिग्रहिपचादिभ्यो ल्युणिन्यचः।
    = नद् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = नद । “नद” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Since it is used in the feminine gender in the language, we have to add the appropriate feminine affix. The term “नदट्” is listed in the पचादि-गणः। The टकारः in “नदट्” is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। The टकारः being a इत् triggers 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः which prescribes the affix ङीप्।

नद + ङीप् । By 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः – To denote the feminine gender, the affix ङीप् is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् which satisfies the following conditions:
    (i) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in a अकार:
    (ii) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in a non-secondary affix which is either टित् (has टकार: as a इत्) or is one of the following – ‘ढ’, ‘अण्’, ‘अञ्’, ‘द्वयसच्’, ‘दघ्नच्’, ‘मात्रच्’, ‘तयप्’, ‘ठक्’, ‘ठञ्’, ‘कञ्’ or ‘क्वरप्’।

    = नद + ई । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। ‘नद’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। This allows 6-4-148 to apply in the next step.
    = नद् + ई । By 6-4-148 यस्येति च, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
    = नदी ।

    The विवक्षा is स्त्रीलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्।
    नदी + आम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “आम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। “नदी” gets the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-3 यू स्त्र्याख्यौ नदी।
    = नदी + नुँट् आम् । By 7-1-54 ह्रस्वनद्यापो नुट्, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = नदीनाम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-2-16 चरेष्टः (used in step 1) the काशिका says – प्रत्ययान्तरकरणं ङीबर्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘अच्’ is coming down from 3-2-9 हरतेरनुद्यमनेऽच्। The ending चकार: in the affix ‘अच्’ is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। So after removing the इत् letter, the affix is ‘अ’। Similarly in the affix ‘ट’ prescribed by 3-2-16 चरेष्टः, the टकार: is a इत् by 1-3-7 चुटू and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। So after removing the इत् letter, this affix also is ‘अ’। So now the question comes as to why पाणिनि: doesn’t simply use the अनुवृत्ति: of ‘अच्’ instead of prescribing a new affix ‘ट’ which is of the same form as ‘अच्’ after removing the इत् letter? The काशिका gives the answer as प्रत्ययान्तरकरणं ङीबर्थम्। प्रत्ययान्तरकरणम् – making (prescribing) a different affix (than ‘अच्’) is ङीबर्थम् – to facilitate the application of the affix ङीप् in the feminine by 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः। Hence, for example, we get the correct form निशाचरी in the feminine. If the affix ‘अच्’ were to be used, we would have to apply 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ resulting in an incorrect form.

    3. In the absence of 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः, which सूत्रम् would have applied in step 4?
Answer: In the absence of 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः, the सूत्रम् 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ would have applied giving an undesired form निशाचरा । By 4-1-4, the प्रातिपदिकानि “अज” etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेश: in the form पेतु:?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि is used for the एकारादेश: in the form पेतुः derived from √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १. ९७९).

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    पत् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = पत् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = पत् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = पत् + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = पत् पत् + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = प पत् + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
= पेत् + उस् । By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि – The अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

    = पेतुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः has been used in the verses in the form नृप

    नॄन् पातीति नृपः।

    ‘प’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √पा (पा रक्षणे २. ५१).

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नृप’ is derived as follows:
नृ + आम् (ref: 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति) + पा + क । By 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः – When in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action) a verbal root which ends in the letter ‘आ’ may take the affix ‘क’ as long as there is no उपसर्गः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे) associated with the verbal root. Note: The affix ‘क’ (prescribed by this सूत्रम्) is an exception to the affix ‘अण्’ prescribed by 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्।

    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः, the term कर्मणि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः from the सूत्रम् 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘नृ + आम्’ (which is the object (कर्म-पदम्) of पाति) gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘आम्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति।
    = नृ + आम् + पा + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = नृ + आम् + प् + अ । By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
    = नृ + आम् + प ।

    Now we form a compound between ‘नृ + आम्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘प’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।

In the compound, ‘नृ आम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position. Note: Here ‘नृ आम्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case ‘उपपदम्’) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’।

    ‘नृ + आम् + प’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    = नृप । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    The विवक्षा is पुंलिङ्गे सम्बुद्धिः।
    (हे) नृप + सुँ (सम्बुद्धिः) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The affix “सुँ” has the सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा here by 2-3-49 एकवचनं संबुद्धिः।
    = (हे) नृप + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = (हे) नृप । By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः।

    Answer: त्रिजटा नाम निशाचरी सीताम् सान्त्वयामास = त्रिजटा नाम निशाचरी सीतां सान्त्वयामास ।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-7 नश्छव्यप्रशान् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-3-7 नश्छव्यप्रशान् has been used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between केशान् + चरणौ = केशांश्चरणौ।

    केशान् + चरणौ
= केशांरुँ + चरणौ । By 8-3-7 नश्छव्यप्रशान्, when the letter “न्” occurs at the end of a पदम् it is substituted by “रुँ” when a “छव्” letter (in this case “च्”) follows as long as the “छव्” letter is followed by an “अम्” letter (in this case “अ”)। 8-3-4 अनुनासिकात् परोऽनुस्वार: – This rule applies to the section 8-3-5 to 8-3-12. In this section, if the letter (in this case “आ”) preceding the “रुँ” is not nasalized then following that letter (which precedes “रुँ”) the अनुस्वार: comes as an augment.
    = केशांर् + चरणौ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = केशां: + चरणौ । By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
    = केशांस् + चरणौ । By 8-3-34 विसर्जनीयस्य सः।
    = केशांश्चरणौ । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the औकारादेश: (substitute “औ”) in the form द्यौ:?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-84 दिव औत्‌ is used for the औकारादेश: (substitute “औ”) in the form द्यौ:।

    स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दिव्’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
    दिव् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
    = दि औ + सुँ । By 7-1-84 दिव औत्‌ – The (ending letter) of the प्रातिपदिकम् “दिव्” gets replaced by an औकार: if the सुँ-प्रत्यय: follows.
    = द्यौ + सुँ । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    = द्यौ + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = द्यौ: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

द्यौ: may also be derived from the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘द्यो’।
    द्यो + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………। The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। As per 7-1-90 गोतो णित्, the affix ‘सुँ’ behaves णिद्वत् (as if it has णकार: as a इत्) here. This allows 7-2-115 to apply in the next step.
    = द्यौ + सुँ । By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति।
    = द्यौ + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = द्यौ: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
