Gita Press translation – Going up to the top of their mansions in order to have a look at Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the ladies of the Kuru race rained flowers on Him, greeting Him with smiling through mingled feelings of affection and bashfulness (16). The thick-haired Arjuna, the favorite of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, held over his most beloved friend His white umbrella which was bordered with strings of pearls and a handle of precious stones; while Uddhava and Sātyaki held a pair of most wonderful chowries. Greeted with showers of flowers on the way, Śrī Kṛṣṇa (the Lord of the Madhus) shone brilliantly (17-18).

“प्रिय” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √प्री (प्रीञ् तर्पणे कान्तौ च ९. २).

The प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रिय” is derived as follows:

By 3-1-135 इगुपधज्ञाप्रीकिरः कः – The affix “क” may be used following
i) a verbal root which has a penultimate इक् letter
ii) the verbal root √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९.

Note: The affix “क” is a कित्। Therefore 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेशः which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः

By 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ – If a प्रत्यय: beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases – (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the प्रत्यय: “श्नु” or (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: or उवर्ण: of a धातु: or (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word “भ्रू”। As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ईकार: is replaced by “इयँङ्”।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. In which chapter of the गीता has the प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रिय” been used in the last word of the chapter?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रिय” has been used in the last word of chapter Twelve in the following verse:

    2. The form ववृषुः is derived from the verbal root √वृष् (वृषुँ सेचने हिंसासङ्क्लेशनयोश्च १. Can you recall a सूत्रम् (which we have studied) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions this verbal root?
८०३) in the सूत्रम् 3-1-120 विभाषा कृवृषोः – The two verbal roots √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. ८०३) optionally take the affix “क्यप्”। Note: In the other case the affix “ण्यत्” is used as per 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌।

    The विवक्षा in ववृषुः is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, the “उस्”-प्रत्यय: is कित् here.
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।

    3. Why does 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च apply in the word जगृहतुः (used in the commentary) but not in the word जग्राह (used in the verses)? Both are derived from √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.७१).
Answer: The forms जगृहतुः and जग्राह are derived as follows:

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “अतुस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
In the next step 6-1-16 applies first (before 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य) as per the following परिभाषा – “सम्प्रसारणं तदाश्रितं च कार्यं बलवत्” – A सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45) operation, as well as an operation (6-1-108) which is dependent on it, possesses greater force (takes precedence over other operations which are simultaneously applicable.)
By 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च – The verbal roots √ग्रह (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ४) take सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45 इग्यणः सम्प्रसारणम्) when followed by an affix which is a कित् or a ङित्।
    Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, the “अतुस्”-प्रत्यय: is a कित् here. This allows 6-1-16 to apply.
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
    Note: The affix णल् which comes in place of the affix तिप् is a पित् as per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – is considered to be a कित्। Since णल् is a पित् it does not become कित् by 1-2-5. For 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च to apply the affix has to be either कित् or ङित्। Since णल् is neither कित् nor ङित्, 6-1-16 does not apply here.
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

    4. Can you spot an affix सन् in the verses?
Answer: An affix सन् can be seen in the form दिदृक्षया।

    “दिदृक्ष” is a सन्नन्त-धातुः derived from the verbal root √दृश् (भ्वादि-गणः, दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे , धातु-पाठः #१.

By 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.
    By 1-2-10 हलन्ताच्च – The affix सन् is considered to be a कित् (having ककारः as a इत्) when it begins with a झल् letter and follows a consonant adjoining a इक् letter. This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

Now we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “दिदृक्षा” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “दिदृक्ष”।
By 3-3-102 अ प्रत्ययात्‌। Note: The affix “अ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
Note: Since the affix “अ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “दिदृक्ष” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 7-3-105 आङि चापः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The Self is dear to (of) everyone.” Use षष्ठी विभक्ति: with “everyone.”

    Advanced question:

    1. Does the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि work for the एकारादेश: in the from रेजे?  If not, can you find a सूत्रम् for performing this operation?
Answer: By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.
In the present case, there is no अकार: in the अङ्गम् ‘राज्’। There is instead a आकार:। Hence even though all other conditions are satisfied, 6-4-120 cannot apply.

    The सूत्रम् 6-4-125 फणां च सप्तानाम् is used for the एकारादेश: in the from रेजे derived from the verbal root √राज् (राजृँ दीप्तौ १.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच्, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-125 फणां च सप्तानाम् – “ए” is optionally substituted for the अवर्णः (अकार:/आकारः) of a अङ्गम् consisting of any one of the seven verbal roots √फण् (फणँ गतौ १. ९६१) and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when the प्रत्यय: following is either a –
    (i) लिँट् affix which is कित्, or
    (ii) “थल्” (मध्यम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्) affix which has a “इट्”-आगम:।

Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – is considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence “एश्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-125 to apply.

    Note:
In आत्मनेपदम्, all the प्रत्ययाः are कित् and hence 6-4-125 applies to give  two alternate forms in each of the nine places:

In परस्मैपदम्, there is only one form when तिप् or मिप् follows but two alternate forms elsewhere:

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-14 रो रि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-3-14 रो रि has been used in the verse in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between कुसुमैः + रेजे = कुसुमै रेजे।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
By 8-3-14 रो रि – The letter “र्” (referred to as रेफ:) is dropped when followed by the letter “र्”।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the टि-लोप: in the form पथि?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः has been used for the टि-लोप: in the form पथि (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पथिन्”, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
Here ‘पथिन्’ gets भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्।
By 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः – When “पथिन्”, “मथिन्” or “ऋभुक्षिन्” has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, its टि-भागः takes लोपः। As per 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि, the टि-भागः of ‘पथिन्’ is ‘इन्’।
