Today we will look at the form राज्ञः mGs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् verse 10-41-34.

Gita Press translation – Solicited (thus) by the Lord, who was most perfect in everyway, that extremely arrogant servant of Kaṁsa (the king of Mathurā), angrily and tauntingly replied (as follows): – (34) “Do you always wear such (excellent) clothes alone, roaming as you do on the mountain and in the woods, that, transcending all bounds of propriety, you dare seek to have royal goods?”(35)

राज्ञः is षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राजन्’।

(1) राजन् + ङस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे – A sixth case affix (‘ङस्’, ‘ओस्’, ‘आम्’) is used in the remaining sense, which is that of a syntactic relation – for example the relation between the owner and the owned – which is other than that expressed by a कारकम् (a participant in the action) and that of (only) the meaning of the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem.)
Note: It is the qualifier (विशेषणम्) which takes the sixth case affix, and not the one qualified (विशेष्यम्)।
In the present example, the sixth case affix in राज्ञ: expresses स्वस्वामिभावसम्बन्ध: – the relationship between the owned (‘भृत्य’) and the owner (‘राजन्’)। ‘भृत्य’ (the servant) is being qualified by his relation to ‘राजन्’ and hence ‘राजन्’ takes the sixth case affix.

(2) राजन् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘ङस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
Note: The अङ्गम् ‘राजन्’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्

(3) राज्न् + अस् । By 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः – There is an elision of the letter ‘अ’ of ‘अन्’ when
i) the ‘अन्’ belongs to a अङ्गम् and
ii) the ‘अन्’ is (immediately) followed by a ‘स्वादि’ affix (ref. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌) which is not सर्वनामस्थानम् and which either begins with the letter ‘य्’ or a vowel (अच्)।

(4) राज्न् + अ: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

(5) राज्ञः । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः – When the letter ‘स्’ or a letter of the त-वर्ग: (‘त्’, ‘थ्’, ‘द्’, ‘ध्’, ‘न्’) comes in contact with either the letter ‘श्’ or a letter of the च-वर्ग: (‘च्’, ‘छ्’, ‘ज्’, ‘झ्’, ‘ञ्’), then it is replaced respectively by ‘श्’, च-वर्ग: (‘च्’, ‘छ्’, ‘ज्’, ‘झ्’, ‘ञ्’)।

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे been used for the last time in the गीता?

2. In the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी the वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे (used in step 1) reads – कारकप्रातिपदिकार्थव्यतिरिक्त: स्वस्वामिभावादिसम्बन्ध: शेषस्तत्र षष्ठी स्यात्। On this the तत्त्वबोधिनी comments – उपयुक्तादन्य: शेष:। कर्मादयश्च प्रातिपदिकार्थपर्यन्ता उपयुक्तास्तत्र द्वितीयादीनां विधानादतो व्याचष्टे – ‘कारकप्रातिपदिकार्थव्यतिरिक्त’ इति। Please explain.

3. In which sense has the affix ‘क्त’ been used in the form रुषित: in the verses?
i) भावे ii) कर्तरि iii) कर्मणि iv) None of the above.

4. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संभावना’ (used in the commentary in the form संभावनायाम् (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्))?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
Śrī Hanumān said to Śrī Rāma – “I am a servant of Sugrīva, the king of monkeys.”

Advanced question:

1. Derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भृत्य’ from the verbal root √भृ (भृञ् भरणे १. १०४५). भृत्य: is explained as – ‘भ्रियते’ इति भृत्य: – A servant is one who is (fit to be) supported. Note: You will need to use the following सूत्रम् (which we have not studied so far) – 3-1-112 भृञोऽसंज्ञायाम् which has the अनुवृत्ति: of क्यप् coming down from 3-1-106 वदः सुपि क्यप् च। Hence the meaning of the सूत्रम् 3-1-112 भृञोऽसंज्ञायाम् is – The affix क्यप् may be used following the verbal root √भृ (भृञ् भरणे १. १०४५) provided the word so derived is not a proper name.

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix सन् in the verses?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-91 सवाभ्यां वामौ been used in the commentary?

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे been used for the last time in the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे has been used for the last time in the गीता in the form हरेः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हरि’, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

    तच्च संस्मृत्य संस्मृत्य रूपमत्यद्भुतं हरेः |
    विस्मयो मे महान्‌ राजन्हृष्यामि च पुनः पुनः || 18-77||

Here the sixth case affix in हरेः expresses स्वस्वामिभावसम्बन्ध: – A relationship between the owner and the owned.
हरेः (रूपम्) – Śrī Hari’s (form). The form is being qualified by (its relation to) Śrī Hari. Hence the qualifier ‘हरि’ takes the sixth case affix to give the form हरेः।
Note: The sixth case affix used in the form मम in the last verse of the गीता is by the सूत्रम् 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति and not by the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे।

    2. In the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी the वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे (used in step 1) reads – कारकप्रातिपदिकार्थव्यतिरिक्त: स्वस्वामिभावादिसम्बन्ध: शेषस्तत्र षष्ठी स्यात्। On this the तत्त्वबोधिनी comments – उपयुक्तादन्य: शेष:। कर्मादयश्च प्रातिपदिकार्थपर्यन्ता उपयुक्तास्तत्र द्वितीयादीनां विधानादतो व्याचष्टे – ‘कारकप्रातिपदिकार्थव्यतिरिक्त’ इति। Please explain.
Answer: शेष: means ‘remainder’ and is defined as उपयुक्तादन्य: – ‘other than what has (already) been used/applied.’ In the अष्टाध्यायी, prior to the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे, the rules from 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया down to 2-3-46 प्रातिपदिकार्थलिङ्गपरिमाणवचनमात्रे प्रथमा have already prescribed the second case etc to denote the कर्म (object) etc down to the first case to denote the प्रातिपदिकार्थ: (the meaning of the nominal stem.) Note: The कर्म (object) etc are called the कारकाणि – participants in the action.

Hence the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says that what is remaining (शेष:) is उपयुक्तादन्य: = कारकप्रातिपदिकार्थव्यतिरिक्त: = what is other than the कारकाणि and the प्रातिपदिकार्थ: (the meaning of the nominal stem.)

    3. In which sense has the affix ‘क्त’ been used in the form रुषित: in the verses?
    i) भावे ii) कर्तरि iii) कर्मणि iv) None of the above.
Answer: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used ii) कर्तरि in the form रुषित: – derived from the verbal root √रुष् (रुषँ हिंसार्थः १. ७८९).

    रुष् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च। The सूत्रम् 3-4-72 applies because the verbal root ‘रुष्’ is अकर्मक: (intransitive).
It declines like राम-शब्दः in the masculine. प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is रुषितः।

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संभावना’ (used in the commentary in the form संभावनायाम् (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्))?
Answer: The कृत् affix ‘युच्’ is used to derive the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘संभावना’ – derived from the causative form of the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’।

    भू + णिच् । By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
    = भू + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = भौ + इ । By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति।
    = भावि । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः। ‘भावि’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

भावि + युच् । By 3-3-107 ण्यासश्रन्थो युच् – Following verbal roots which end in the affix ‘णि’ as well as following the verbal roots √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २. ११) and √श्रन्थ् (श्रन्थँ विमोचनप्रतिहर्षयोः ९. ४६), the affix युच् is used to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
Note: The affix युच् prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘अ’ prescribed by 3-3-102 अ प्रत्ययात्‌ (in the case of verbal roots which end in the affix ‘णि’) and 3-3-103 गुरोश्च हलः (in the case of verbal roots √आस् and √श्रन्थ्)।
    = भावि + यु । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = भावि + अन । By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
    = भाव् + अन । By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।
    = भावन ।

    सम् + भावन । ‘भावन’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘सम्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    = सं + भावन । By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।
    = सम्भावन/संभावन । By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य।
    ‘सम्भावन/संभावन’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
    सम्भावन/संभावन + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = सम्भावन/संभावन + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सम्भावना/संभावना । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
Śrī Hanumān said to Śrī Rāma – “I am a servant of Sugrīva, the king of monkeys.”
    Answer: वानराणाम् राज्ञः सुग्रीवस्य सेवकः अस्मि इति श्रीहनुमान् श्रीरामम् उवाच = वानराणां राज्ञः सुग्रीवस्य सेवकोऽस्मीति श्रीहनुमाञ्श्रीराममुवाच।

Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भृत्य’ is derived from the verbal root √भृ (भृञ् भरणे १. १०४५) as follows:

    भृ + क्यप् । By 3-1-112 भृञोऽसंज्ञायाम्

Answer: The affix सन् is occurs in the form अभीप्सथ – derived from the desiderative form of the verbal root √आप् (आपॢँ व्याप्तौ ५. १६).

    अभ्याप्तुमिच्छथ = अभीप्सथ।

आप् + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).
    = आप् + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
