स्त्रीम् fAs

नमः सर्वेभ्यः।

Today we will look at the formation of स्त्रीम् (fAs) from verse रामायणम् R3-55-37

न चापि रावणः कांचिन्मूर्ध्ना स्त्रीं प्रणमेत ह|
एवमुक्त्वा दशग्रीवो मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम्|
कृतान्तवशमापन्नो ममेयमिति मन्यते॥

(1) स्त्री + अम्।

(2) स्त्री + अम्। मकारः in अम् is not an इत् letter by 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः ।

(3) स्त्री + अम्। By 6-4-80 वाऽम्शसोः ।, the ईकारः of स्त्री gets the इयँङ् आदेशः optionally when followed by अम् or शस्. This derivation is the non-इयँङ् derivation.

(4) स्त्रीम्। By, 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः ।, the ईकारः of स्त्री and the अकारः of अम् get the पूर्वरूपम् as a single substitute.

Please try to answer the following questions:

1. Why did the ending मकार: in मैथिलीम् become an अनुस्वार:, but the ending मकार: in आत्मजाम् did not?

2. We have learnt through many examples in the रामायणम् class that the प्रत्यय: क्त्वा is used where there is a single doer (समान-कर्ता) doing two actions. The पाणिनि-सूत्रम् is समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले 3-4-21. The verb of the earlier action takes the प्रत्यय: क्त्वा In this verse that verb is वच् – giving the form उक्त्वा. Who is the समानकर्ता here and what is his/her later action?

3. The अव्ययम् “इति” is used as an end-quote. The open-quote is not specifically indicated, so it is up to us to find out (from the context) where the quotation begins. We have इति in the last line of the example. Can someone figure out where the quotation begins?

  1. 2. The समान-कर्ता here is दशग्रीवः
His later action was to think(deem) that मैथिली was his!

  2. 1.The ending मकार: in मैथिलीम् becomes an अनुस्वार: by the application of the Sutra ८.३.२३: मॊSनुस्वारः
    (मान्तस्य पदस्यानुस्वारॊ हलि –पदान्तस्य मकार: from येनविधिस्तदन्तस्य–१.१.७१ and हलि from हलिसर्वेषाम्–८.३.२२)

but the ending मकार: in आत्मजाम् did not because of the अवसानावस्था -nothing follows.
