सहिष्णुम् mAs

Today we will look at the form सहिष्णुम् mAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.5.5.

Gita Press translation – Enjoined thus by the wrathful Rudra (who is anger personified,) he went round (as a mark of respect) the all-pervading Lord, the adored of (all) the gods (and departed.) At that time he thought himself, by virtue of his irresistible force, as capable of braving the might of the most powerful, O dear Vidura (5). He thundered most terribly and, lifting his trident, which was capable of destroying even Death (the destroyer of the universe,) ran (towards Dakṣa’s abode,) followed by the attendants of Śrī Rudra – who were (all) roaring violently – the anklets about his ankles making a jingling sound (even as he trod the earth) (6).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सहिष्णु’ is derived from the verbal root √सह् (षहँ मर्षणे १.

The धातुः “षहँ” has an initial षकारः in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, there is the substitution of सकारः in the place of the initial षकारः of a धातुः। The अकार: at the end of ‘षहँ’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

By 3-2-136 अलंकृञ्निराकृञ्प्रजनोत्पचोत्पतोन्मदरुच्यपत्रपवृतुवृधुसहचर इष्णुच् – Following any one of the verbal roots listed below, the affix ‘इष्णुच्’ may be used to denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill –

‘सहिष्णु’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix “अम्” there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Can you find a line in Chapter Thirteen of the गीता in which the affix ‘इष्णुच्’ has been used twice? Note: 3-2-136 is not applicable for these forms because the affix ‘इष्णुच्’ has been applied following verbal roots not specifically listed in 3-2-136. Then how do we justify these? We’ll have to use the statement from the काशिका (under 3-2-138 भुवश्च) which says that चकारोऽनुक्तसमुच्चयार्थः – meaning that by using ‘च’ in 3-2-138, पाणिनि: gives the suggestion that the affix ‘इष्णुच्’ may sometimes be seen being used following verbal roots other than those specifically mentioned.

2. The सूत्रम् 3-2-136 अलंकृञ्निराकृञ्प्रजनोत्पचोत्पतोन्मदरुच्यपत्रपवृतुवृधुसहचर इष्णुच् belongs to the अधिकार: of ‘तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु’। From which सूत्रम् up to which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: run this अधिकार:?

3. The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्तक’ (used twice as part of the compound जगदन्तकान्तकम् in the verses) is given by one of the commentators as follows – अन्तं करोति = अन्तयति। Please explain.

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् been used in the verses?

5. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“You are good at tolerating pain.”  Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्लेश’ for ‘pain.’

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the augment ‘अट्’ in two places in the verses?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः been used in the commentary?

Answer: The affix इष्णुच् has been used to derive the forms ग्रसिष्णु and प्रभविष्णु।
    ग्रसिष्णु is derived from the verbal root √ग्रस् (ग्रसुँ अदने १. ७१७) and प्रभविष्णु is derived from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’।

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिके ‘ग्रसिष्णु’ and ‘प्रभविष्णु’ is similar to the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सहिष्णु’ as shown in the post. In the case of ‘प्रभविष्णु’, we have to also do गुणादेशः by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः followed by 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्।

    Similarly

    2. The सूत्रम् 3-2-136 अलंकृञ्निराकृञ्प्रजनोत्पचोत्पतोन्मदरुच्यपत्रपवृतुवृधुसहचर इष्णुच् belongs to the अधिकार: of ‘तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु’। From which सूत्रम् up to which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: run this अधिकार:?
    Answer: The अधिकारः of ‘तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु’ begins from 3-2-134 आक्वेस्तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु and goes down to 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते।

    3. The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्तक’ (used twice as part of the compound जगदन्तकान्तकम् in the verses) is given by one of the commentators as follows – अन्तं करोति = अन्तयति। Please explain.
Answer: The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्तक’ is as follows:
By the गणसूत्रम् – प्रातिपदिकाद् धात्वर्थे बहुलमिष्ठवच्च along with गणसूत्रम् – तत्करोति तदाचष्टे – The affix णिच् is used in the sense of “he/she does/makes or tells/describes that.”
Note: The affix णिच् behaves इष्ठवत् (by the गणसूत्रम् – प्रातिपदिकाद् धात्वर्थे बहुलमिष्ठवच्च।) This allows the अङ्गम् “अन्त” to get the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। The भ-सञ्ज्ञा is required for the application of 6-4-148 in the next step.
By 6-4-148 यस्येति च। Note: “इष्ठन्” is a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः। This allows 6-4-148 to apply.

Since “अन्ति” has the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा, we can use the affix “ण्वुल्” by 3-1-133. This is what is explained by ‘तत्करोति-‘ इति ण्यन्ताद् ण्वुल्।
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes “ण्वुल्” and “तृच्” may be used after a verbal root. Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, the affixes “ण्वुल्” and “तृच्” are used in the sense of the agent of the action.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ।
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् has been used in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्वीयमान’ in the form अन्वीयमानः।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्वीयमान’ is a passive form derived from the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अनु’।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च blocks the गुणादेश: (in place of the letter ‘इ’ of the अङ्गम्) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – A अकार: belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the ‘मुँक्’-आगम: joins after the अकार:।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
    ‘अन्वीयमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।

    5. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ in the verses?
Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ can be seen in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नदत्’ in the form नदद्भिः।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नदत्’ is derived from the verbal root √नद् (णदँ अव्यक्ते शब्दे १. The beginning णकारः of ‘णदँ’ takes नकार-आदेशः by 6-1-65 णो नः।

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नदत्’ is similar to the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’ as shown in answer to question 3 the following comment – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/01/02/शयिष्यमाणः-mns/#comment-13325

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of ‘भिस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। Now ‘नदत्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने।
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?

“You are good at tolerating pain.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्लेश’ for ‘pain.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Can you spot the augment ‘अट्’ in two places in the verses?
Answer: The augment ‘अट्’ has been used in the two forms व्यनदत् and प्राद्रवत्।

    The form व्यनदत् is derived from the verbal root √नद् (णदँ अव्यक्ते शब्दे १. ५६) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’। The beginning णकारः of ‘णदँ’ takes नकार-आदेशः by 6-1-65 णो नः।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च ।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the augment ‘अट्’ which is उदात्तः। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment ‘अट्’ is placed at the beginning of the अङ्गम् ‘नदत्’।

    “वि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for the derivation of अद्रवत् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/11/01/उरगः-mns/#comment-5757

    ‘प्र’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः has been used in the form अङ्घ्री (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अङ्घ्रि’, प्रथमा-द्विवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 6-1-102 प्रथमयो: पूर्वसवर्ण: – When an अक् letter is followed by a vowel (अच्) of the first (nominative) or second (accusative) case then for the two of them (अक् + अच्) there is a single substitute which is the elongated form of the first member (the अक् letter.)
