Gita Press translation – Thick tresses of hair overhung my face and brilliant ear-rings added luster to my cheeks. Lifting up my face I glanced at the kings on all sides with enlivening smiles and sidelong looks and with a heart over-flowing with love gently placed the necklace round the neck of my Lord (29). The moment I placed the necklace round His neck, clay tomtoms, tabors, conchs, drums and kettledrums were sounded; male and female dancers began to dance, and songsters began to sing (in various tunes) (30).

  1. 1. Where has the affix “ण्वुल्” been used for the first time in the गीता?
Answer: The affix “ण्वुल्” has been used for the first time in the गीता in the form नायकाः derived from √नी (णीञ् प्रापणे १.

    The beginning णकारः of “णीञ्” takes नकार-आदेशः by 6-1-65 णो नः। The ending ञकारः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ।
Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, the affixes “ण्वुल्” and “तृच्” are used in the sense of the agent of the action.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ।
By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “जस्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-102 प्रथमयो: पूर्वसवर्ण:।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ the तत्त्वबोधिनी says णकारो वृद्ध्यर्थः। Please explain.
Answer: The purpose of using णकारः as a इत् in the affix ‘ण्वुल्’ is to allow the वृद्धिः operation by 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति/7-2-116 अत उपधायाः। Note: This is not the only प्रयोजनम् (purpose) of having णकार: as a इत् in ‘ण्वुल्’। णकार: as a इत् also allows 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः to apply in forms like दायक:, गायक: etc.

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः the तत्त्वबोधिनी says ञ्णितीति किम्? Please explain.
    Answer: “पानीय” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् derived from √पा (पा पाने १.

By 3-1-96 तव्यत्तव्यानीयरः। Note: Since the सूत्रम् 3-1-96 तव्यत्तव्यानीयरः occurs in the अधिकारः of ‘3-1-95 कृत्याः’ the affix ‘अनीयर्’ gets the designation ‘कृत्य’। And as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः the affix ‘अनीयर्’ is used here भावे/कर्मणि – to denote the action (भावः) or the object (कर्म) – depending on the context.
    Note: As per 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः – A अङ्गम् ending in a आकार: takes the augment युक् when followed by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् (has ञकार: as a इत्) or णित् (has णकार: as a इत्)। Here the अङ्गम् “पा” ends in a आकारः but is followed by a कृत् affix ‘अनीयर्’ which is neither a ञित् nor a णित्। Therefore 7-3-33 does not apply here.

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the आकार-लोपः in the form निदधे? Where else has this सूत्रम् been used in the verses?
    The सूत्रम् 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च is used for the आकार-लोपः in the form निदधे – derived from √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।

By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च – The ending आकार: of an अङ्गम् takes लोप: when followed by a vowel-beginning आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: that has either:
    (i) a “इट्”-आगम: or (ii) a ककार: or ङकार: as an इत्।
Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, the “ए”-प्रत्यय: is कित् here. This allows 6-4-64 to apply.

By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च।

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    The सूत्रम् 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च is also used for the आकार-लोपः in the form जगुः derived from √गै (गै शब्दे १.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्। By 6-1-45 आदेच उपदेशेऽशिति – The ending एच् (“ए”, “ओ”, “ऐ”, “औ”) letter of a धातु: in the धातु-पाठ: is replaced by a आकार:, but not in the context where a शकार: which is a इत् follows.
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च – The ending आकार: of an अङ्गम् takes लोप: when followed by a vowel-beginning आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: that has either:
    (i) a “इट्”-आगम: or (ii) a ककार: or ङकार: as an इत्।

    Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, the “उस्”-प्रत्यय: is a कित् here. This allows 6-4-64 to apply.

    5. Can you spot a अभ्यास-लोपः in the verses?
    Answer: A अभ्यास-लोपः is seen in the form निनेदुः derived from √नद् (णदँ अव्यक्ते शब्दे १. The initial णकार: of “णदँ” is replaced by a नकार: by 6-1-65 णो नः।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् ।

By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – is considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence “उस्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-120 to apply.

    “नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Who is the best singer among all of you?”
