Today we will look at the form अदात् 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 9.6.31.

Gita Press translation – When the babe cried much (for being suckled) and the Brāhmaṇas anxiously inquired: “Whom will this prince suck?”, Indra put into the babe’s mouth his index finger (dripping with nectar), saying “The babe will suck me (Mām Dhātā); do not cry, my child!” (Hence the babe became known as Māndhātā) (31). The father of the babe did not die by the grace of the Brāhmaṇas and the gods (even though he had his pelvic region split up). (Nay,) he forthwith attained perfection (final beatitude) in that very hermitage through asceticism (32).

अदात् is derived from the धातुः √दा (जुहोत्यादि-गणः, डुदाञ् दाने, धातु-पाठः #३. १०)

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

√दा has ञकारः as इत् in the धातु-पाठः। Hence by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, √दा is उभयपदी। In this verse, it has taken a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

By 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु, when followed by a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:, the प्रत्यय: “सिँच्” takes the लुक् elision if preceded by √गा (the substitute “गा” which comes in place of इण् गतौ २. ४० by 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि) or √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ) or any verbal root which has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref. १).
Note: 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते does not apply here, because it requires the affix सिँच् to be actually present. Here the affix सिँच् has taken the लुक् elision, hence 7-3-96 does not apply.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

    2. Can you recall a सूत्रम् by which the use of a परस्मैपदम् affix is justified in the form ममार?
    Answer: ममार is derived from √मृ (मृङ् प्राणत्यागे #६. The विवक्षा here is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथमपुरुष:, एकवचनम्।
    By the सूत्रम् 1-3-61 म्रियतेर्लुङ्‌लिङोश्च, the verbal root √मृ (मृङ् प्राणत्यागे #६. १३९) takes a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः only when लुँङ्, लिँङ् or शित्-प्रत्ययः is used, not otherwise. By 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् √मृ takes a परस्मैपदम् affix, since लिँट् is used here and there is no शित् affix following the verbal root.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।

By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।

    Answer: The form धास्यति has been derived from √धे (धेट् पाने १.

By 6-1-45 आदेच उपदेशेऽशिति – The ending एच् (“ए”, “ओ”, “ऐ”, “औ”) letter of a धातु: in the धातु-पाठ: is replaced by a आकार:, but not in the context where a शकार: which is a इत् follows.
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-28 इट ईटि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-28 इट ईटि has been used in the form मा रोदीः derived from √रुद् (अदादि-गणः, रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने, धातु-पाठः #२.

By 3-3-175 माङि लुङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।

By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) shall not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
By 8-2-28 इट ईटि, a सकार:, which is preceded by the augment इट् and followed by the augment ईट्, is elided.
Note: By the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-2-3) सिज्लोप एकादेशे सिद्धो वाच्यः – If a single substitute is to be done, then the elision of the affix सिँच् should be considered सिद्ध: (evident.) This वार्त्तिकम् allows 6-1-01 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to apply in spite of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    5. In which तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses has the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) been used?
Answer: The verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) has been used in the form अन्वगात्

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past. By 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि – When the intention is to add the affix “लुँङ्”, there is a substitution of “गा” in the place of √इ (इण् गतौ २.
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

    “अनु” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Do not give this book to one who does not study grammar.” Use an appropriate form of the pronouns “यद्” and “तद्”। ४१) with the उपसर्ग: “अधि” for “to study.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. By which सूत्रम् does the verbal root √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. १०) get the घु-सञ्ज्ञा (required for applying the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु in step 8)?
    Answer: By the सूत्रम् 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप् – The verbal roots having the form “दा” or “धा”, except √दाप् (लवने २. १०७३), get the घु-सञ्ज्ञा।
    Note : The following 6 roots have the घु-सञ्ज्ञा ।

    The following verse illustrates this…

    2. Can you spot an augment “स्याट्” in the commentary?
Answer: The augment “स्याट्” has been used in the form तस्याम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “तद्”, स्त्रीलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
Since we are deriving a feminine form, we have to add the प्रत्ययः “टाप्” to “त” using 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्।
By 7-3-116 ङेराम्नद्याम्नीभ्यः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “आम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, “आम्” is ङित् because it came in place of “ङि”।
By 7-3-114 सर्वनाम्नः स्याड्ढ्रस्वश्च, the ङित् affixes that follow a सर्वनाम-शब्द: that ends in an आप् affix, get the स्याट् augment and the (अङ्गम् ending in) आप् is shortened. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment स्याट् joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय: “आम्”।
