Today we will look at the form अगात् 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.18.27.

Gita Press translation – The auspicious period, known by the name of Abhijit (so opportune for victory), which commenced at midday, has now all but passed. Therefore, in the interest of us, Your friends, pray, dispose of this formidable foe quickly (27). This fellow has, luckily enough for us, come of his own accord to You, his death, ordained (by Yourself). Therefore, exhibiting Your prowess, kill him in this duel and establish the worlds in peace (28).

अगात् is derived from the धातुः √इ (इण् गतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ४०)

This धातु: is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √इ (इण् गतौ २. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०) can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past. By 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि – When the intention is to add the affix “लुँङ्”, there is a substitution of “गा” in the place of √इ (इण् गतौ २.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

By 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु, when followed by a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:, the प्रत्यय: “सिँच्” takes the लुक् elision if preceded by √गा (the substitute “गा” which comes in place of इण् गतौ २. ४० by 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि) or √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ) or any verbal root which has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref. १).
Note: 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते does not apply here, because it requires the affix सिँच् to be actually present. Here the affix सिँच् has taken the लुक् elision, hence 7-3-96 does not apply.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the augment “अट्” which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the augment “अट्” at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

Questions:

1. The सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु (used in step 8) is used in the गीता in only one word. Which one is it?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु, the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says “गापाविहेणादेशपिबती गृह्येते।” Please explain.

3. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-119 घ्वसोरेद्धावभ्यासलोपश्च been used in the verses?

4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-105 अतो हेः apply in the form जहि?

5. Can you spot the affix “णिच्” in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the commentary?

6.  How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“My daughter went to school in the morning.” Use the (compound) feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “पाठशाला” for “school.”

Easy Questions:

1. Is there an alternate form (by the सूत्रम् 6-4-136 विभाषा ङिश्योः) for the word शर्मणि (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “शर्मन्”, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-34 द्वितीयाटौस्स्वेनः been used in the verses?
