Gita Press translation – The king (Parīkṣit) submitted : What was the occasion for the curse pronounced by the preceptor (the sage Vasiṣṭha) on the high-souled Saudāsa? We desire to know this, which may (kindly) be pointed out (to us) unless it is a secret (19). Śrī Śuka replied: While roaming in pursuit of game, so the tradition goes, Saudāsa (son of Sudāsa) killed a certain ogre and let go his brother, who immediately left with the intention of retaliating (20).

मृग्यन्ते पशवोऽस्यामिति मृगया।

The स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मृगया’ is derived from the verbal root √मृग (मृग अन्वेषणे १०. ४४२).

(1) मृग + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच् – The affix णिच् is used after these words – “सत्य” ‘truth’ (which then takes the form of “सत्याप्” as exhibited in the सूत्रम्), “पाश” ‘fetter’, “रूप” ‘form’, “वीणा” ‘lute’, “तूल” ‘cotton’, “श्लोक” ‘celebration’, “सेना” ‘army’, “लोमन्” ‘hair of the body’, “त्वच” ‘skin’, “वर्मन्” ‘mail’, “वर्ण” ‘color’, “चूर्ण” ‘powder’ and the verbal roots belonging to the चुरादि-गणः

(2) मृग + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Note: 6-4-48 अतो लोपः should have applied here but it is bypassed in order to get the ready-made form ‘मृगया’ given by the above वार्तिकम्। And then 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति is not applied because if we did we wouldn’t get the desired form ‘मृगया’। ‘मृग + इ’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

(3) मृग + इ + यक् + श । By the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-101 इच्छा) परिचर्यापरिसर्यामृगयाटाट्यानामुपसङ्ख्यानम् – ‘परिचर्या’, ‘परिसर्या’, ‘मृगया’ and ‘अटाट्या’ are given as a ready-made forms (implying the application of the affixes ‘श’ and ‘यक्’) to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
Note: The affix ‘श’ as well as ‘यक्’ is implied in the ready-form ‘मृगया’ given by the above वार्तिकम्।

(4) मृग + यक् + श । By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि – The “णि”-प्रत्यय: is elided when followed by an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which does not have the augment इट्।

(5) मृग + य + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) मृग + य । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

= मृगय ।

‘मृगय’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।

(7) मृगय + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(8) मृगय + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) मृगया । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

(10) मृगया + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(11) मृगयाम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. In Chapter Eighteen of the गीता can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् (used as part of a compound) derived using the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-101 इच्छा) परिचर्यापरिसर्यामृगयाटाट्यानामुपसङ्ख्यानम्?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिचर्या’ derived using the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-101 इच्छा) परिचर्यापरिसर्यामृगयाटाट्यानामुपसङ्ख्यानम् occurs in the compound परिचर्यात्मकम् in the following verse of Chapter Eighteen of the गीता –
    कृषिगौरक्ष्यवाणिज्यं वैश्यकर्म स्वभावजम्‌ |
    परिचर्यात्मकं कर्म शूद्रस्यापि स्वभावजम्‌ || 18-44||

    परिचरणं परिचर्या is derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थ: | भक्षणे च १. ६४०) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘परि’।

परि चर् + श । Note: The affix ‘श’ is implied in the ready made form ‘परिचर्या’ given by the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-101 इच्छा) परिचर्यापरिसर्यामृगयाटाट्यानामुपसङ्ख्यानम्। Note: The affix ‘श’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् to apply in the next step.
    = परि चर् + यक् + श । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = परि चर् + य + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = परि चर्य । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = परिचर्य + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = परिचर्य + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = परिचर्या । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। ‘परिचर्या’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    2. Commenting on the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-101 इच्छा) परिचर्यापरिसर्यामृगयाटाट्यानामुपसङ्ख्यानम् (used in step 3) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – परिसर्या परिसरणम्। अत्र गुणोऽपि (निपात्यते)। Please explain.
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परिसर्या’ is derived as follows from the verbal root √सृ (सृ गतौ १. १०८५, सृ गतौ ३. १८) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘परि’ –

परि सृ + श । Note: The affix ‘श’ is implied in the ready-form ‘परिसर्या’ given by the above वार्तिकम्। Note: The affix ‘श’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् to apply in the next step.
    = परि सृ + यक् + श । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = परि सृ + य + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = परि सर् + य + अ । The affix यक् is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) and hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च blocks 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः but still the गुण: substitution ‘अ’ (followed by 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः) in place of ‘ऋ’ is done in order to get the ready made form ‘परिसर्या’ given by the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-101 इच्छा) परिचर्यापरिसर्यामृगयाटाट्यानामुपसङ्ख्यानम्। This is what is meant by the comment अत्र गुणोऽपि (निपात्यते)।
    = परि सर्य । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = परिसर्य + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = परिसर्य + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = परिसर्या । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। ‘परिसर्या’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix तुमुँन् in the word वेदितुम् used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-158 समानकर्तृकेषु तुमुन् prescribes the affix तुमुँन् in the word वेदितुम् used in the verses.

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वेदितुम्’ is derived from the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९) as follows –

विद् + तुमुँन् । By 3-3-158 समानकर्तृकेषु तुमुन् – The affix तुमुँन् may be used following a verbal root when in conjunction with another verbal root which denotes the sense of ‘wish/desire’, provided both actions have the same agent.
    Note: वेदितुमिच्छामः । The verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८) used in इच्छामि denotes ‘wish/desire.’ The common agent of both the actions of वेदितुम् and इच्छामः is वयम्।
    = विद् + तुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = वेद् + तुम् । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = वेद् + इट् तुम् । By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = वेदितुम् । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। ‘वेदितुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    4. In which word in the verses has the affix ‘लँट्’ taken the substitution ‘शतृँ’?
    Answer: The affix ‘लँट्’ has taken the substitution ‘शतृँ’ in the form चरन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’ is derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थाः भक्षणेऽपि १.६४०) as follows:
    चर् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = चर् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
= चर् + शतृँ । By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः- ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ replaces ‘लँट्’ when it follows a verbal root which denotes an action which constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) or result/cause (हेतु: = फलम्/कारणम्) of another action. In the present example, the action चरन् (roaming) constitutes a characteristic of the action जघान (killed.)
    Note: As per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् the verbal root ‘चर्’ takes परस्मैपदम् affixes in कर्तरि प्रयोग: (active voice.) As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the affix ‘शतृँ’ (and not ‘शानच्’) is used here.
    = चर् + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चर् + शप् + अत् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = चर् + अ + अत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चरत् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे। ‘चरत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The derivation of चरन् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’ is as follows:
    चरत् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….। Note: The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
    = चरत् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चर नुँम् त् + स् । By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः। Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चरत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which has the letter ‘ऋ’ as a इत्। This allows 7-1-70 to apply here.
    = चरन्त् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चरन्त् । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात् सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्। ‘चरन्त्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
    = चरन् । By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    5. Where does the सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च find application in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च finds application in the derivation of the form गतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गत’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) used in the verses. Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि (to denote the agent) here as per 3-4-72.

Please see answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form गतः – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/11/26/कीर्णानाम्-mgp/#comment-8851

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“While roaming in pursuit of game, the king Duṣyanta saw the hermitage of the sage Kaṇva.”
    Answer: मृगयाम् चरन् राजा दुष्यन्तः मुनेः कण्वस्य आश्रमम् ददर्श = मृगयां चरन् राजा दुष्यन्तो मुनेः कण्वस्याश्रमं ददर्श।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the elision of the affix णिच् in the word कथ्यताम्?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि prescribes the elision of the affix णिच् in the word कथ्यताम्।

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form कथ्यताम् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/03/16/विस्तरिष्यते-3ps-लृँट्/#comment-3495

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः has been used in the form भ्रातरम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भ्रातृ’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

    भ्रातृ + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The affix ‘अम्’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = भ्रातर् अम् । By 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः – The ending letter ‘ऋ’ of a अङ्गम् gets a गुणः replacement, when followed by the affix ‘ङि’ (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) or an affix with the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of the letter ‘ऋ’ if an अण् letter (‘अ’, ‘इ’, ‘उ’) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a ‘रँ’ (‘र्’, ‘ल्’) letter.
    = भ्रातरम् ।
