Today we will look at the form अरोदीः 2As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.12.10.

Gita Press translation – Intending to comply with this prayer of the boy, the worshipful Brahmā (who was born of the lotus) replied in kind tones: “Do not cry, I shall presently do it for you (9). Since you wept as a frightened child, O chief of the gods, hence people will call you by the name of Rudra (lit., one who weeps)” (10).

अरोदीः is derived from the धातुः √रुद् (अदादि-गणः, रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने, धातु-पाठः #२. ६२)

In the धातु-पाठः, √रुद् has “इर्” as an इत्। (Note: “इर्” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by the वार्त्तिकम् “इर इत्सञ्ज्ञा वाच्या।”) The इकार: in “इर्” has a उदात्त-स्वर: here. Thus √रुद् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, √रुद् in कर्तरि प्रयोग: takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √रुद् can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “सिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः – an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “इट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।

By 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते – A अपृक्त-हल् (affix which is a single consonant – ref. 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्ययः) takes the “ईट्” augment in the following two cases:
i. The अपृक्त-हल् follows the “सिँच्”-प्रत्यय: which is actually present or
ii. ६०) which is actually present.
As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “ईट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।

By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च, when a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its इक्-letter takes गुण-आदेशः in the following two cases:
i) The अङ्गम् ends in a “पुक्”-आगमः।
or
ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “अट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-2-28 इट ईटि, a सकार:, which is preceded by the augment इट् and followed by the augment ईट्, is elided.

By the वार्त्तिकम् under 8-2-3 सिज्लोप एकादेशे सिद्धो वाच्यः – If a single substitute is to be done, then the elision of the affix सिँच् should be considered सिद्ध: (evident.) This वार्त्तिकम् allows 6-1-01 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to apply.
