व्यवसाय ind

Today we will look at the form व्यवसाय ind from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.12.33.

Gita Press translation – As he was about to soar for the divine realm, Dhruva recalled his mother Sunīti, and said to himself, “Shall I have to proceed to the inaccessible heaven, leaving my poor mother behind?” (32) Having read his mind as depicted above, the two foremost divinities showed the shining lady going ahead (of Dhruva) in another aerial car (33).

व्यवसाय is derived from the verbal root √सो (षो अन्तकर्मणि ४. ४२) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’ and ‘अव’।

The verbal root ‘षो’ has an initial letter ‘ष्’ in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः, the letter ‘स्’ is substituted in place of the initial letter ‘ष्’ of a verbal root in the धातु-पाठः। So we now have √सो। Recall that as per 6-1-45 आदेच उपदेशेऽशिति – The ending एच् (‘ए’, ‘ओ’, ‘ऐ’, ‘औ’) letter of a verbal root in the धातु-पाठ: is replaced by the letter ‘आ’, but not in the context where the letter ‘श्’ which is a इत् follows. Hence we start the derivation with √सा।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले – The affix ‘क्‍त्‍वा’ is used following a verbal root which denotes a prior action relative to that of another verbal root, provided the agent of both the actions is the same.
Note: Here the common agent of the actions व्यवसाय (having read) and दर्शयामासतुः (showed) is सुरोत्तमौ (the two foremost divinities.) The earlier of the two actions is the action ‘having read’ which is denoted by √सो and hence √सो takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.

‘सा + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘वि अव’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः

By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)

Note: As per 6-4-69 न ल्यपि – The letter ‘आ’ of the verbal roots listed in 6-4-66 घुमास्थागापाजहातिसां हलि does not get the letter ‘ई’ as a replacement, when followed by the affix ‘ल्यप्’। 6-4-69 prevents 6-4-66 from applying here.

By 6-1-77 इको यणचि

‘व्यवसाय’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः

(6) व्यवसाय + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after a अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-69 न ल्यपि (used in step 4) been used in Chapter Five of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-69 न ल्यपि (used in step 4) been used in the form आधाय – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’।

The derivation is as follows –

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions आधाय (having placed) – as well as त्यक्त्वा (having given up) – and करोति (does) is यः (who). The earlier action is the action ‘having placed’ denoted by √धा – as well as the action ‘having given up’ denoted by √त्यज् – and hence √धा as well as √त्यज् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
‘धा + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    ‘आधाय’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः।

Please explain.
Answer: How do we justify the form निपीय which has been used in literature? The तत्त्वबोधिनी answers that the form निपीय is derived from the verbal root √पी (पीङ् पाने ४.३६) and not from √पा (पा पाने १. The letter ‘ई’ in निपीय is not a आदेशः (substitute) for the letter ‘आ’, but a part of the verbal root itself.

The derivation is as follows –

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
‘पी + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘नि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)
    ‘निपीय’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः।

If the verbal root √पा (पा पाने १. १०७४) were to be used we would get the form निपाय (because 6-4-69 न ल्यपि would prevent 6-4-66 घुमास्थागापाजहातिसां हलि from bringing in the substitution ‘ई’।)

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘हि’ in हित्वा?
    Answer: The substitution ‘हि’ in हित्वा is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि – When followed by the affix ‘क्त्वा’ the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९) takes the substitution ‘हि’।
Please refer to the following post for derivation of the form हित्वा – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/06/19/हित्वा-ind/

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा has been used the form आरोक्ष्यन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आरोक्ष्यत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    ‘आरोक्ष्यत्’ is derived from the verbal root √रुह् (रुहँ बीजजन्मनि प्रादुर्भावे च १. ९९५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’ as follows –
By 3-3-14 लृटः सद् वा – An affix which is designated as ‘सत्’ (ref. 3-2-127) optionally replaces लृँट् । As per 3-2-127 तौ सत्‌ – The two affixes ‘शतृँ’ and ‘शानच्’ are designated as ‘सत्’। The affix ‘शतृँ’ has the designation परस्मैपदम् as per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम् while the affix ‘शानच्’ has the designation आत्मनेपदम् as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्। The affix ‘शतृँ’ is chosen here as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः। Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 8-2-31 हो ढः।

The derivation of आरोक्ष्यन् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आरोक्ष्यत्’ is as follows:
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….। Note: The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। This allows 7-1-70 to apply below.
By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः। Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आरोक्ष्यत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which has the letter ‘ऋ’ as a इत्। This allows 7-1-70 to apply here.
‘आरोक्ष्यन्त्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    5. Can you spot the affix खल् in the commentary?
Answer:The affix ‘खल्’ is used in the form दुर्गमम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुर्गम’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) which is qualifying the neuter noun त्रिविष्टपम्।

The form ‘दुर्गम’ is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७)in composition with ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ as follows –
By 3-3-126 ईषद्दुःसुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल् – The affix खल् is used following a verbal root when in composition with either ‘ईषत्’ or ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ or ‘सु’ used in the sense of ‘difficulty’ or ‘ease.’
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-3-126 ईषद्‌दु:सुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्, the term ईषद्‌दु:सुषु ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Now we form the compound between ‘दुर्/दुस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘गम’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। Note: The उपपदम् ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् as per the सूत्रम् 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case. And hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-24 अतोऽम्। Note: 7-1-24 is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.
    1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Having resolved to abduct Sīta, Rāvaṇa requested assistance from Mārīca.” Use the neuter noun ‘साहाय्य’ for ‘assistance.’ Use the verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) with the prefix ‘अप’ for ‘to abduct’ and the verbal root √याच् (टुयाचृँ याच्ञायाम् १. १००१) for ‘to request.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Can you spot the augment अट् in the verses?
Answer: The augment ‘अट्’ is used in the form अन्वस्मरत् – derived from the verbal root √स्मृ (स्मृ चिन्तायाम् १.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च ।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, a अङ्गम् gets the augment ‘अट्’। This augment ‘अट्’ has the उदात्तः accent. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment ‘अट्’ joins at the beginning of the अङ्गम् ‘स्मरत्’।

    ‘अनु’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Why is गच्छतीम् a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage)?
Answer: The form गच्छतीम् a आर्ष-प्रयोग: because the augment नुँम् is missing. This is in violation of the सूत्रम् 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम् – When a term (‘त्’) which is part of the affix ‘शतृँ’ follows a अवर्ण: (the letter ‘अ’ or ‘आ’) belonging to the affix ‘शप्’/’श्यन्’, then a अङ्गम् ending in such a term always takes the नुँम् augment when the affix ‘शी’ or the feminine affix ‘ङी’ follows.

    The correct form is The

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गच्छन्ती’ is derived as follows –
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘गच्छत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
By 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम्, 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
